ALT Men Jerusalem Summer 2017 1. Introduction

Congratulations on being selected to take part in Onward Israel’s Summer jInternship 2017 Session in Jerusalem! The program is hosted by ALT and organized by jInternship. This unique and innovative program is a hybrid of life skill learning and professional development.

We hope you will keep in mind that your internship has been secured through much effort, networking and administrative work. This opportunity is a privilege. You were selected because of the high recommendations you received from your campus rabbi/other references as well as the talents and potential that was apparent from your interviews and resume. Based on this, we have great confidence that you will live up to the high expectations we and your host-company have for you. 2. Your Professional Internship

Since most students will work for different host companies, it is not in the scope of this Guidebook to discuss specific requirements for time spent at your professional internship. In general, you should discuss the requirements for the internship with your supervisor and your jInternship internship Coordinator: (Bashi Rosen, Ariella Abbo, Elanah Oberg etc.)

Upon arrival in Israel, you will be given an internship-packet that includes information such as the contact information of your supervisor, directions to your internship, bus routes, proper attire, an overview of the work culture in Israel, etc. Make sure you understand clearly what their expectations are for you, and please feel free to ask your internship coordinator any questions you might have.

It is recommended that you convey to your host company what you hope to accomplish during the internship in one of your first meetings with them.

If you have any problems with your internship, you should immediately be in touch with your internship coordinator. It is her job to make sure that things run smoothly. The entire ALT & jInternship teams are committed to making your summer experience a total success, your open communication with our staff is key to accomplishing this goal.

Upon arrival in Israel, the ALT staff will assist you to secure a Rav Kav card for public transportation to/from work. As stated earlier, you will also receive clear transportation instructions, but if you have any questions feel free to speak with your ALT program directors.

ALT Men Jerusalem Summer 2017 3. College Credits

The jInternship program is not currently accredited for college credits. However, many universities will offer credits for internships done through non-accredited programs so long as the internship is supervised. Several participants have done this in the past. The jInternship team is happy to work together with your host-company’s supervisor to assist you in receiving college credits for your experience. Please tell your internship coordinator before the program starts if you are interested in this arrangement. More importantly, make sure you contact the appropriate department at your university and that you understand all the requirements you will need to fulfill to receive college credits. 4.0 What To Do When You Land

Your apartment address is: Rechov Eliyahu Mani 6, , Jerusalem.

If you are arriving with a group of other students, you can speak to your program director about arranging a group taxi. If you are travelling on your own, we advise you take a shuttle service which will take you from the airport to the apartment. When you come to the arrivals hall, take the elevator up to the second floor and exit the building. You will see many taxis parked right there. Turn right and walk about 100 meters until you see the large 14-seater vans. These are the Shuttle services, each one heading to a different city in Israel. Most drivers will understand English and will be able to direct you to the Jerusalem shuttle. Have the destination address written down so you can tell him where you need to be dropped off. It will cost you the equivalent of about $18, but I am not sure whether you can pay in dollars or will need to have the local NIS currency. You will be able to change some money to NIS at the airport

4.1 The ALT Program

University is a time to prepare for life. Students want to experience different opportunities in the job market and build up a resume, they want to see the world and they want to deepen their understanding of life and Judaism. ALT is offering an innovative and unique approach to life skill development and career preparation: Why not do them all at once?

Enjoy all three in the jInternship Program

Students in the ALT jInternship program spend 8 weeks in Jerusalem dividing their time between experiencing Jerusalem, personalized internships and learning about life. The majority of the program is the internship phase, where students work 9-3 and have 3 nights of programming from @ 6:15 – 8:30, one night of eating dinner at a local mentors home, and 1 free evening. Most evenings students get to relax and enjoy Jerusalem.

ALT Men Jerusalem Summer 2017 4.2 Room, Board and Tuition

Due to generous subsidies from the Jewish Agency, jInternship, and Onward Israel students accepted into the program receive air conditioned rooms, three meals a day, health insurance, great touring around Israel and exciting classes. Students are only required to pay a minimal fee dependent upon their country of origin for their internship placement and cover to their own airfare for this exciting eight week program.

The food provided on the program will be more than pleasing for most students - please note that if you are a very picky eater, it is advised to prepare in advance and bring extra money for supplementing meals. Bringing additional spending money for your free time and gifts is also advised.

4.3 A message from ALT's Program Director

5.0 Housing

You will be staying in a comfortable apartment in the Nachlaot neighborhood of Jerusalem, centrally located near the Shuk. The apartment is air conditioned and equipped with washing machine, dryer and wi-fi internet connection.

The apartment is fully furnished and will provide you with a pillow, a set of sheets, and a towel. If you require more than one pillow/set of sheets/towel, please be advised that you should either bring an extra set or be prepared to purchase a set in Israel. There will be at least two students per room. 5.1 Student Apartment Rules

ALT Men Jerusalem Summer 2017

Students will be required to pay a $200 deposit paid in cash upon arrival to the program, which will be refunded at the end of the program provided you have participated fully in all mandatory programs, have not been kicked off the program, and have not done any damage to the apartment or other jinternship property.

NOTE: If you have any reasonable suggestions for the improvement of the living quarters please let us know. Where possible we try to implement things that will allow your stay to be as comfortable as possible.

6. Security

The neighborhood in which the apartments are located is quite safe. Caution should be taken when walking alone at night in the Downtown or areas. We recommend that you do NOT walk alone. Our Security Policy is found below.

As mentioned previously security is a high priority for us. You are in Israel, and although you will be as safe here as in most places in the world where Jews live, that is true for those who do not take unnecessary risks. We may notify you of security alerts. These alerts will be in response to information from the Israeli security forces that they have information that terrorist organizations are preparing an infiltration and attack. At these times please remain on campus. Still, if you are off campus during an alert please call in to notify us that you are alright. The vast majority of these attempts have been thwarted by the security forces, thank G-d, but still, EVERYONE must follow this rule.

If you wish to visit relatives who live in places which are considered, “the territories,” or any place that the ALT program deems as not secure, we are serving written notice that we accept

© jInternship, 2017 Issue Date: March 20, 2017

ALT Men Jerusalem Summer 2017 no responsibility for your safety. Upon arrival - you will be required to agree to Onward Israel security protocols which will inform you of places you can and cannot travel to, as well as other safeguards.

7. ALT Programming

ALT programming will be eye-opening and extremely beneficial to your future. The curriculum and touring has been designed with much thought and care and is expected to be very enjoyable for you from beginning to end. All students' participation in ALT programming is required, and explicit permission from the program director is required for any foreseeable absence. Lack of attendance in ALT programming will be considered a reason for dismissal from the program and internship. Standard programming includes educational portions of the full first two weeks, and during the internship phase of the program you will be expected to attend the 3 weekly evening sessions.

8. Weekends

During the 8 week program, roughly 4 of the weekends will be free weekends and 4 will be ALT "Shabbatonim" or group weekend experiences. Students are free to travel and do as they wish during the “free weekends” within the safety guidelines which will be sent to the student before the program begins. The government of Israel will designate certain areas which will deemed unsafe for travel and the student will need to sign a waiver that in the event they travel to such areas they will exonerate Onward Israel and jInternship from any potential liability. Any expense for travel will be borne by the participant. You are also permitted to stay in the apartments during your free Shabbat. Any student asking for plans during free weekends should speak to trip staff within 3 days of the weekend so that proper accommodations can be set up.

During group weekends or “Shabbatonim”, no religious ritual will be forced upon students nor will it be expected that any student will participant in any experience outside of their comfort zone. Students will not be expected to know all the rules of the Sabbath, nor to observe the Sabbath beyond their comfort level, but they will be asked to respect their fellow trip participants and staff members by refraining from cell phone use in public and other easy guidelines as will be explained in the trip orientation. 9. Trips (Tiyulim)

Tiyulim are arranged for your enjoyment, for your learning, and for the bonding experience. The scheduled tiyulim are mandatory. It is important to us that you learn about the and have fun. Students are not permitted to skip trips at any point of the program unless express permission is granted by ALT program directors.

10. Cell Phones

In order for us to be compliant with security regulations, and so that our staff and your employer can contact you in a reasonable manner, we need to be able to be in contact with you throughout the trip. Therefore, you are required to have active phone service (not only wifi) throughout your trip. Your options are as follows:

1. Bring an UNLOCKED GSM phone, and purchase a sim card ($100 USD for the whole trip, includes unlimited local calls, int'l calls to most countries, and large data plan) 2. Rent a basic phone with call and texting only, no apps ($90USD) 3. Rent a smart phone with the unlimited local/int'l calling and large data plan ($180 USD)

We work with a reliable provider of phone rentals and sim card services, and will make sure that by the second day of the program your phone is set up according to one of the above methods. 11. Passport

Prior to your arrival in Israel, you will be required to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date you intend to leave Israel.

12. Suggested Packing List

Below is a suggested list of what to bring. The weather in Jerusalem can vary from quite mild to very hot in the summer. There are laundry facilities in your apartment, so plan your quantities of supplies accordingly.

1) one set of linens & towels will be provided, should you want more please bring them

2) sweaters (even if the summer days are hot, the nights are cool)

3) night wear

4) comfortable clothing for hiking

5) sturdy sneakers or hiking boots for dry and wet hikes

6) adapter for electrical appliances

Note: Israel runs on 220 voltage. Don't forget to bring transformers for your hairdryer and other electrical appliances.

7) sunscreen with high SPF, hat with brim, sunglasses

8) insect repellent, basic medication (for headache, stomach upset), toiletries (wrap all liquids in plastic to avoid spillage)

9) flashlight

10) camera

11) notebooks and pens

12) alarm clock with batteries

13) money for your free time

14) credit card for emergency use

15) Overnight Bag (big enough for a weekend away)

16) Formal wear for Shabbat is recommended

Clothing needs in Israel are less than at home and room for storage is limited. An oversupply of items can be inconvenient for both you and others. Please bear in mind that most things one might need are readily available in Israel. We strongly advise NOT to over-pack.
