Sladek said it had illustrated the point to her that too often, the City Commission doesn’t listen to its constituents. “Fifty people came and spoke against the idea,” she said. “It was still a four to one vote to do it. I was the one vote. They came and spoke and I just thought, what was that all for? It didn’t seem to make an impact. Now we have a streetlight fee, which is a way for them to get $1.2 mil- lion every year.” She said her goal was to “bring a little politeness back to City Hall.” “Our citizens deserve to be dealt with respectfully, not cut off if they have a different opinion,” she said. “There has to be room for diversity of ideas in City Hall.” She also criticized the way the City Commission utilized its consent agenda at meetings. She said they had a policy where no one could ask to remove items from the consent agenda unless a majority of the commissioners voted to do so. “They wouldn’t allow any items to be removed,” she said. “I used to vote ‘no’ on the entire consent agenda some- times.” However, Deputy City Manager Patrick Kelly disput- ed this, saying that commis- sioners could remove items from the consent agenda and often questioned staff about items on the consent agenda. But all of those things are reasons why Sladek said she decided to run for mayor. “This is the people’s cam- paign,” she said. “If people can’t step up, I can’t run effec- tively and the status quo wins. If they like the status quo, all they have to do is nothing.” SANFORD HERALD Midweek: July 17-20, 2019 • PAGE 7 'Justice wasn't served': 50 years since Chappaquiddick
