Today’s Musicians

BRIAN ARSENAULT began playing viola in third grade, because the music program of the Milford (Massachusetts) Public Schools offered lessons, and he went on to study with Roberto Diaz and Burton Fine. He was selected to perform at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for three years, earned a BM in viola performance from the New England Conservatory, and also earned an MLIS from the Florida State University. He began playing violin in Tallahassee as a fiddler, playing traditional Irish music in sessions and with the groups Barley Thar and The Ned Devines. He has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Community Chorus Orchestra, and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. Brian works as a web developer for the Center for Information Management and Educational Services at FSU, studies voice with Carla Connors, and sings bass in the St. John’s Episcopal Church adult and Compline choirs.

VALERIE PREBYS ARSENAULT has two favorite musical activities: teaching the violin and playing . She is the President and Music Director of the Tallahassee Bach Parley, and she maintains a thriving studio of violin and viola students at the core of the Bach Parley String Academy. As Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida State University she directs the Baroque Ensemble (on period instruments), teaches music history, and has taught violin and directed the Irish Ensemble. She is a member of the Tallahassee Symphony and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. She studied violin at the New England Conservatory (BM), violin pedagogy and baroque violin at the Indiana University School of Music (MM, Early Music), and earned her doctorate from the Florida State University College of Music. At the Bach Parley String Academy, Arsenault uses a synthesis of Suzuki and traditional pedagogy, tailored to suit the strengths and learning styles of each student. Her approach is positive and compassionate, but also demanding, and she enjoys helping her students find creative solutions to technical and musical challenges.

MIRIAM BARFIELD began studying the violin at age six with Melissa Brewer. She received her Bachelor of Music from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Pamela Ryan, and completed a Master of Music in Viola Performance at The Boston Conservatory under Patricia McCarty. She was a state winner for the ASTA National Solo Competition in 2010 (Massachusetts) and in 2008 (Florida) and has performed in master classes for Joseph Silverstein, Robert Spano, James Dunham, and Thomas Dumm. She has been a member of many orchestras, including the Tallahassee Symphony, the Columbus (GA) Symphony, the Albany (GA) Symphony (as principal), the Mobile Symphony, and the Cape Ann Symphony (MA). Miriam has attended the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland, Brevard Music Festival, Schlern International Music Festival in , and the Meadowmount School of Music, where she was a teaching assistant for four summers and performed with violinists Joseph Silverstein and James Ehnes. She teaches violin and viola at the Bach Parley String Academy.

MARNIE KIM JONES, violoncellist, holds a Bachelors in Music degree and an Artist Diploma from McGill University (studio of Antonio Lysy) and a Masters in Music degree from the Eastman School of Music (studio of Steven Doane). While at Eastman she also studied string pedagogy with Louis Bergonzi and Baroque performance practice with Paul O'Dette and Christel Thielmann. Kim is originally from Calgary, Alberta, where she studied with John Kadz; she has also performed in masterclasses for Anner Bylsma, Bernard Greenhouse, Franz Helmerson, Desmond Hoebig, Steven Isserlis, Laurence Lesser, Siegfried Palm, Aldo Parisot, Fred Sherry, Janos Starker, and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Previously a tenured member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, she now serves as associate principal cellist with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and maintains a private studio of over thirty students.

WEBB WIGGINS, recognized and lauded internationally for his innovative and musical continuo realizations, has performed and recorded with many US ensembles. His collaborations with soloists, both vocal and instrumental, have earned him high respect among his colleagues in the world of baroque music and earlier.

Wiggins is also one of the foremost teachers of harpsichord as well as a coach for baroque chamber music and as musical director of baroque . He was on faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music for over thirty years. Webb has given concerts, classes, lectures, and coachings in Shanghai and Ecuador as well as in the US. His recordings can be heard on the Smithsonian, Dorian, EMI, Bard, and PGM labels.

Webb holds degrees in organ performance from Stetson University and the Eastman School of Music and has done additional harpsichord study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He is perhaps the only harpsichordist in modern times to have given multiple performances on trans- Atlantic voyages.

Auditions Feb. 17, FSU College of Music

For the eighth consecutive year, the Bach Parley will organize Kids Go for B’roque, a competition and recital featuring talented young musicians playing pieces from the Baroque era. With the permission of his or her music teacher, any child age 18 or younger may audition playing on strings (violin, viola, cello, bass), guitar, wind instruments, or piano; vocalists and small chamber ensembles are also welcome to participate. All students audition for and receive written feedback from three judges who are professional musicians and educators. The highest scoring students perform at the final performance for the public.

For more information visit BachParley.org/KGFB
