14 TOYO UNIVERSITY NEWS No.261 TOYO UNIVERSITY NEWS No.261 15 Progress rogressIntroducing a Promising Toyo University Student A place where I can research what I want, as much as I want P When I was an undergraduate, I expanded my horizons by taking lectures that I had even the slightest interest in, rather than worrying about how many credits At Toyo University, many students demonstrate their outstanding were required. However, in the third year, when I started to think about job talents in a wide range of fields, including scholarly and scientific hunting, I became aware of how little I knew and how underdeveloped my research, sports, and volunteer activities. knowledge was, and at the same time, I strongly felt "MORE". When I consulted This time we interviewed Yulana Watanabe, who used the early with Professor Takayuki Fujimoto— whose laboratory I was assigned to— he told enrollment program to enter graduate school and completed me about the early enrollment system. I decided to use this system to advance to the master's program early. graduate school one year earlier than usual for pursuing specialist studies. At graduate school, I remain at the same laboratory as my undergraduate studies and I am researching the topic of combing the appeal of digital and analog. In particular, I am recently working on developing a device that uses actual paper to replicate the sensation and action of turning-page experience when reading e-books on a smartphone or tablet. Actually, I prefer analog, so I still read many paper books, as well as collect them and CDs. With the advance of digitalism in today's society, I wondered if we are losing our attachment towards individual items. Therefore, I think I am able to be passionate about what I do because not only my current research theme is in line with my hobbies and interests, but also everything I experienced and felt connects to my research. And fortunately, there are many tech-savvy and flexible-thinking people around me, so I can always get tips and solutions when I get stuck. I am incredibly grateful for the current environment where I get to be immersed in my research.

Graduate School of Information Sciences and Arts Course of Information Sciences and Arts, Doctoral Program, 1st year student (Fujimoto Laboratory) Endeavors and mindset for learning Yulana Watanabe Passed graduate school admission via the early enrollment exam during their third year at the Faculty of Information Sciences and Arts I am also experiencing new attempt, such as presentations at international congresses. When asked about my research at a conference, it is quite a challenge at the IIAI-AAI 2019 in September 2019. for me to communicate in English about specialist topics in a way that is easy for others to understand, and without offending people more *IIAI-AAI 2019: 8th International Congress on Advanced Applied Informatics senior than me. However, every time I attend an international conference, I spent very refreshing, and meaningful time, though getting exposed to the research I was completely unaware of, and receiving suggestions from unique perspectives. In my daily research, sometimes I run into obstacles and experience setbacks. Graduate school is not always fun, but that is why I strongly believe whether it is beneficial or not depends on me (, and it's up to you (as well)). I have not set a specific occupation as a (future) goal. In this day and age, it is difficult to even imagine what careers and lifestyles will exist in the future when digitalization has progressed. That is why I want to gain the ability to live in any future by expanding my knowledge more than now and not being bound by any fixed notions.

You should try to enjoy in this your time

Currently, I am spending my days researching at university, but I do not used to like studying. At high school, my grades were not good, also I chose liberal arts courses that are not necessary for general university entrance exams. However, I have always had an appetite for learning, and enjoyed the feeling of my horizons expanding when I learn something new. Due to my family's influence, I went on many trips, including those overseas since early childhood, and perhaps the excitement of learning about an unknown world was maybe a formative experience for me. Especially, my father telling me to "You should try to enjoy in this your time.?” is connected to my personality of fully committing to what fascinates me. After

going to university, I was fascinated with the academic learning that When receiving the Honorable Mention Award Watanabe's office is full of reference books from was different from the memorization study that I had experienced at the IIAI-AAI 2019 a wide range of topics from data science until high school. and design to philosophy
