5 Project Background Significantly Tanzania invested in the water supply services in the rural areas since early 1970’s, however up to date; water supply coverage is not satisfactory. The 1991 national water policy set a goal of providing clean and safe water to the population within 400 meters from their households by the year 2002. Nevertheless, by the end of 2002, only 50% of the rural population had access to a reliable water supply services and due to poor operational and maintenance arrangement, 30% of the water supply scheme in the rural areas were not functioning properly. Tanzania Ministry of Water (MoW) has a goal of increasing the water supply coverage to the rural population up to 80% by the end of the year 2020. As part of meeting the MoW objective, this project will address the issue by providing safe and adequate water supply to three villages; Kigogo and Nyange with populations of 4,232 and 2,411 respectively in and Kasongati with a population of 4,423 in Kakonko District both in Kigoma Region. Through this project the following are expected to be achieved; improved hygiene practices, reduced significant risk of water based diseases and also providing the community with more time for other economical activities. Currently, Kigogo village has existing gravity scheme which is currently not operating properly but this will be addressed and solved through improvement at the water source, tank rehabilitation, replacement of pipes and assorted fittings and also through rehabilitation of the tap stands at the water collection point (DP). The other two villages, i.e. Nyange and Kasongati have un-functional and not equipped boreholes which will be used as the water sources for water supply in the villages’ and the activities will include; pumping test, equipping, solarization and installation of water network. For sustainability of the project, capacity building for Community Based Water Supply Organization (CBWSO) and water collection point committees will be done and properly monitored for at least two months.

6 Expected Results • Increase the provisional of safe and adequate water supply to the Tanzanian population of three villages, Kigogo and Nyange in Kibondo District and Kasongati in Kakonko District in Kigoma Region, through improvement of gravity schemes and installation of new water networks and infrastructures. • Strengthened capacity of targeted communities, institutions and stakeholders that support replication, scaling-up and sustaining WASH services in schools and communities that are coordinated in synergy with regional and district administrations.
