Dear student,

Welcome to Kutafin Moscow State Law University (MSAL). The Kutafin Moscow State Law University’s history goes back to December 1931 when the Government made a decision to widen higher legal education in order to provide the state with sufficient number of qualified lawyers. Nowadays, Kutafin University is being recognized not just as education institution but as a real Alma mater for students. Students are supposed to obtain fundamental theoretical knowledge, practical skills and to understand a soul of the jurisprudence as such. Kutafin University’s profile includes Civil Law, Constitutional (State) Law, Criminal Law, Private International Law, Public International Law, Forensic Expertise, etc. Kutafin University (MSAL) has ten legal departments (there is department of energy law, one of the first in Russia), 32 chairs with over 890 teaching staff, including over 180 professors most of them are well known in the international legal community. Nowadays, there are 20 Master’s degree programmes (International Law, Law of the EU, International Trade Law, Banking Law, Sports Law, etc.). One of the most essential objects of our University is international cooperation. Nowadays, the globalization of the world’s economy has led to a tendency of «internationalization» of the education world. Kutafin University cooperates with wide range of well-known universities and international institutions from Asia, Europe, and America. Currently, vast of cooperation agreements on education and science with international colleagues are being carried into force. The strategic goals for the nearest future we have: increase a number of international students, visitors, graduates, teaching stuff, development of dual and multi diplomas education programs in cooperation with international colleagues, increase a number of international academic projects, conferences, seminars, increase a number of professors, scientists participated in such programs, increase a number and quality of publications in internationals academic journals and etc. I wish you good luck and successful training!

1. PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION 1.1. Accommodation The most fundamental issue in a one’s journey is not only to find a quite comfortable place to live, but to find a place that suits the budget of a person and meets location conditions. So, as for Moscow, that is not just the fundamental issue, it is a crucial aspect which is certainly has to be resolved and arranged beforehand. Temporary accommodation You may also need a place to sleep at the first day of an arrival in case if there is no option for choosing one of our dormitories. For that purpose we’ll advise you to use some of well-known websites to book a room at Hostels or Hotels, such as: http://www.hostels.com/moscow/russia or http://www.booking.com/ .

1.2. Immigration procedures Foreign citizens (students) from visa entry countries have to apply for the Student visa which is valid up to more than 90 days for long term courses or up to 90 days for short term courses. The type of visa to be submitted depends on the actual education programme. We advise you to obtain additional information at the Embassy of Russian Federation in your country.

1.3. Insurance Foreign students arrived to the University on the purpose of education, shall have an appropriate medical insurance. This medical insurance shall secure provision and financing of services for an unexpected decease (ambulance), an outpatient treatment and risk of repatriation. In case of a foreign medical insurance, a foreign student shall bring all necessary evidences that such services may be provided in Russia. The absence of an appropriate medical insurance is subject for expulsion of a foreign citizen (shall be handled by foreign citizen himself/herself) 1.4. Finances Costs of living in Moscow, Russia Experience has shown that students living and studying in Moscow spend approximately $500-600 a month. This amount is needed to cover daily expenses, meals, accommodation costs, insurance, etc. This estimate does not include tuition fees, immigration fees and unforeseen costs, and should be used as a general indication of the costs of living. 1.5. Traveling from an Airport to Moscow By train The easiest way to get to Moscow is to take a very sophisticated and comfortable Aeroexpess train. You will find an appropriate platform following the sights at the Airport. Apparently, you're meant to buy a ticket for this journey - you may keep some money if you buy it on-line here: https://www.aeroexpress.ru/en or buy it directly near the platform using ticket machine. You may also download the Aeroexpress mobile app. It is available for IOS, Android and Windows mobile.

From SHEREMETEVO to Moscow, BelorusskayaTrain Station your journey will take approx. 35 minutes From to Moscow,Kievskaya Train Station, your journey will take approx. 36 minutes From DOMODEDOVO to Moscow, Paveletsky Rail Terminal your journey will take approx. 45 minutes By taxi You can also take a taxi from one of three airports to Moscow. It will cost you about 35-50 $. We can recommend you to upload mobiles apps such as Yandex Taxi or Gett Taxi to be sure to pay reasonable money. These apps are also available in English. By bus: The more demand of getting to an Airport the more companies offer bus services. From VNUKOVO to Moscow: Bus #611 operates between the airport and the Yugo-Zapadnaya and Troparyovo Metro Stations. The bus journey takes 35-40 minutes and costs (RUB50 ($0, 80)) From DOMODEDOVO to Moscow: Bus #308operates every 15 minutes, but every 40 minutes between midnight and 6:00AM. The trip takes 30 minutes and costs RUB120 ($2). The bus heads to the Metro Station

2. FIRST DAYS AT MSAL 2.1. Necessary documents: 1. Original document of the University Degree (Nostrification of foreign educational documents); 2. Original medical certificate if needed (Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), 086-y form); 3. Valid passport or valid identity card (the original document + translated notarised copy); 4. 8 photos 3*4; 5. Upon arrival you are obliged to obtain an insurance

Kutafin Moscow State Law University (MSAL) is currently Alma Materfor almost 13000 students. The number is increasing every year. MSAL has 4 campuses.

The main building is located on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya Street, 9. The Main campus is located in the very city center of Moscow, in 10-15 minutes’ walk away from the well-known ArbatStreet. The building was architected by Nikiforov A.A. in 1901 year and came to us in its historical view.

You may be subject to gather a monthly scholarship from the University, You are also meant to collect your credit card and bank account details at VTB 24, and you have to ask about it your Coordinator at the International Cooperation Office.

2.4. Migration registration procedure Foreign citizens (students) who arrived on the purpose of education are subject to migration registration upon the place of study within 3 days from the date of arrival, including the period of vacations in accordance with Russian legislation. For that reason, a Foreign Student shall immediately visit the International Students Office of the University (room 757) upon arrival to Moscow, bring all the necessary documents (a passport or an ID, a migration card, a visa l (if available)). In case of a breach of the Russian Regulations on the Regime of Staying (Residing), all expenses upon expulsion shall be handled by foreign citizen. For the prolonging purpose of the migration registration procedure foreign students shall bring the necessary documents to the International Students Office (a passport or an ID, a migration card, the stamped tear-off part of the Notification on Arrival) not less than 2 weeks before the end of the period of migration registration procedure. Foreign citizens from visa entry countries may study on the full-time basis just in case of handling entry studying visa. An invitation for the period of examination is drawn for those who study on the part-time basis. Foreign students shall visit the International Students Office for the purpose of prolonging a studying visa not less than 25 days before the visa expiration. Loss of documents In case of a loss of any documents — including a passport, an ID, a migration card or a visa, — the student must immediately notify the nearest police office of the Russia’s Ministry of Interior Affairs of the loss, collect an appropriate paper, bring it to the Embassy and one copy to the International Students Office. When a new passport is gathered, an

International student shall bring it to the International Students Office within 24 hours for the new migration registration procedure.

2.5. Getting a mobile phone or Sim-card There are three leader providers of mobile communication in Russia: Beeline, MTS, Megafon. Yota is presented much less than abovementioned providers and is quite expensive. Lately, a brand new mobile communication provider appeared in the field – TELE2. The latter is the most decent option for those, who uses the Internet connection a lot and is not going outside Moscow. Furthermore, TELE2 is the cheapest option presented. You can order your Sim-card online, just visit: http://en.tele2.ru/

2.6. Wi-fi To use the computer facilities or the wireless network at one of the MSAL campuses and to log on to the university websites from home or any other location, you are given your own login and password. You can collect it at the International Cooperation Office.

3. USEFULL INFORMATION 3.1. Russian educational system The very first time you are introduced to a new country, city, culture or lifestyle and so on, undoubtedly you can find them different from the things you are used to have. Apparently, the Russian educational system differs from the system you used to have. Therefore, this paragraph is made to help you understand what to expect from Russian education system. The assessment system in Russia consists of marks from 2 (bad) to 5 (excellent). Marks from 2 to 5 are used for underestimation of the exam. Concurrently, the assessment system consists of points from 1(very bad) to 100 (excellent) which is normally used for mid-terms and exams. To be able to pass each examination during class work you have to collect no less than 40 points and no more than 60 points. When the time of exam is determined you have to pass an exam at the minimum of 15 points. There is 10 additional points for personal skills awarded to those who attend all the classes during semester. Thus, there is a minimum of 60 points is required to pass a course. 3.2. 4.1. Russia and Russian

Russia (Russian: Rossija) is by far the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, spanning Eastern Europe and northern Asia.

Language: The official language of the Russian Federation is Russian, which is spoken by almost all the inhabitants.

4.3. Moscow- the city of contrasts The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow’s great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch on Pushkin square.

4.4. Getting around By metro Central Moscow is best explored on foot, but as the distances are huge, it's easiest to use the famous Metro system. It is comprehensive, boasts some great architecture and is relatively cheap. • Details of prices and multiple purchase discounts are on the official website • You can easily find any station you need on the map. • The Metro is open from 5:30 a.m - 1:00 a.m. • The has free Wi-Fi at all 12 lines, but only inside the trains. By bus and trolleybus Most Moscow buses and trolleybuses operate 05:30-01:00 but recently night routes have been introduced. • Timetable for almost all routes of buses, trolleybuses and trams can be found here. • The information about the ticket costs is available here. By tram Now tram daily usage by the Muscovites is low (about 5%), although it still remains vital in some districts for those who need to get to the nearby Metro station. Red Square - The heart of Moscow and the first destination for most visitors to the city.

Metro: Ohotnii Ryad, Teatralnaya or Ploshad Revolutsii.

Lenin Mausoleum Free admission. Open 10AM-1PM closed Mondays and Fridays.

St Basil Cathedral

The Kremlin - this gigantic site cannot be missed. The Diamond collection in the Armoury is worth a visit on its own. Tickets are 700 rubles to visit the armory and 350 rubles to visit everything else. Metro: for tourist entrances - Biblioteka im. V.I.Lenina, Alexandrovskii Sad, Arbatskaya (Dark Blue line, east exit) .

Old Arbat Street - metro: Smolenskaya (both blue lines), Arbatskaya (both blue lines, from Dark Blue line take west exit).

Bolshoi Theatre – sit in front of the famed theater near the fountain, or catch a show inside if you can. Tickets start at around 1000 rubles. Metro: Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya or Ploshad Revolutsii.
