3 THE LEGACY GALA 2015

Saturday, November 14, 2015 is the second annual LEGACY GALA at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort. This event celebrates the legacy of Bishop Moore Catholic High School’s mission while honoring three individuals who have established a LEGACY of service and philanthropy for our community and Bishop Moore Catholic for decades. This year our honorees are Cesar Calvet ’64, Norma Coto, and Fr. William Ennis.

Their leadership has helped achieve Catholic education excellence and ensure its future in Central Florida. Event proceeds will establish the Legacy Fund which will focus on enriching the Bishop Moore Catholic students’ experience to more fully develop them personally, spiritually, and intellectually.

This year, the Legacy Fund will be dedicated to enhancing two integral spaces on the Bishop Moore Catholic Campus: Campus Ministry and the Demetree Media Center. The Demetree Media Center will be transformed into a vibrant gathering place, comfortable and conducive to studying while providing a setting for student collaboration during and after school where they can grab a snack or drink. By incorporating the needs of today’s student population, we will have a true Student Educational Center. Campus Ministry will receive renovations to provide indoor/outdoor areas inspiring spiritual growth, community building, and faith formation. As our Campus Ministry program continues to thrive, these improvements will offer a welcoming space necessary for students to continue their faith journey.

11 MISSION TRIP

In a remote mountain village of the Dominican Education is something we often take for granted, not Republic, we saw this scripture come to life as tiny Dominican realizing the way it empowers us. These children know hands gripped ours, and sweet Dominican smiles welcomed that an education is the only way they will have a voice for us without hesitation. This was the second year in a row themselves and their families who have been oppressed for that the Bishop Moore Catholic Campus Ministry brought far too long. Each day they begin school with a song which a group of our students and staff on an says, “Let the children sing that live in peace, adventure to serve our brothers and sisters for those who suffer pain. Let the children in our sister diocese of San Juan de la WE LOVE sing for those that can’t because they ’t Maguana in the Dominican Republic. Looking out over the mountaintops, English to elementary students in one of standing higher than the clouds, there was no our mission schools. Before the school day question that our Creator had made this for begins, these Dominican children perform their morning his children. We could hear God in the silence, as we sat in chores of gathering water and firewood for the family, all prayer without any distractions of technology. It was simply before the sun rises. Then, their little feet take to the rocky us and the world. More than this, though, we experienced mountain paths and they begin the uphill climb to school. God in the incredible people we met so far off the beaten path.

12 Mark SanGiovanni ’15 explained, “We were met with MET ‘03 the widest open arms I have ever had the pleasure to experience.” He was describing our first hostess, Marita, who invited us into her humble home to serve us a meal of the best of what she had. “She poured her love into every bite, just for us strangers,” he realized. The entire week-long mission trip was filled with loving moments like this one.

This connection between our students and the people of this village made it very hard to say goodbye as their little hands waved out of the classroom windows. “It’s hard to leave the mountain because I am so afraid to leave this overwhelming feeling of love. However, I understand that what we’ve seen, we are meant to share,” Gray Malias ’15 said. 17 CHEERLEADING 2014-15 was another banner year for the competitive cheerleading team. The team placed first in the FHSAA State 1A – Large Division finals held at Spurs Arena in Kissimmee on January 30, 2015.

This was the team’s 7th consecutive state title. Head Coach Shannon Lambert was interviewed shortly after the victory and asked to reect on the ast 8 years with the Bishop Moore Catholic cheerleading program.

How did you get involved in cheerleading? When my daughter Mercedes (BMC ’13) was three years old, she told me she wanted to be a cheerleader. At the time, I didn’t know much about the sport so I decided to jump in head first. If it was something my daughter wanted to do, I was going to do it to the best of my ability.

18 So how did you become the coach here at Bishop Moore? In 2007, I was coaching cheerleading at Good Shepherd and was running my gym University CATS. Then-Principal Maureen Kane and Athletic Director RECORDS Mike Malatesta asked me to take over the school’s program.

What are some of the accomplishments you are most proud of for those involved with the program? 2007-08 Probably one of the highlights was placing as State Runner-Up that first year Extra Large Varsity of coaching here. That was the first year that FHSAA recognized competitive State Runner-Up cheerleading as a sanctioned varsity sport. 2012 was also a banner year when the team was won the national competition and were able to hang the school’s first national title banner. And then to win seven consecutive titles has really been 2008-09 amazing. It is a true testament to the hard work of the athletes, their families, Extra Large Varsity and the coaches. State Champion

Another great accomplishment has been the recognition by other programs to 2009-10 the behavior and attitude of the athletes throughout the years. Each summer when we go to camp, the squads have earned too many Tradition Awards to Extra Large Varsity count…these go out to the teams that have demonstrated the best behavior State Champion and deemed the most respectful at camp. It is a true reflection of the Catholic community. 2010 -11 Extra Large Varsity To what do you attribute the success of the program? Commitment to faith is probably the biggest reason for the team’s success. As State Champion a Catholic institution, the athletes learn about their faith in the classroom and I ask them to go deeper and learn to love and know the Lord through cheer. 2011-12 Participation in the program should draw them all closer to God. I have been Extra Large Varsity so very fortunate to have a great coaching staff and the support of so many 1A State Champion wonderful families.

Your eighth season marks the last in your coaching career here at 2012-13 Bishop Moore. What do you plan on doing next? Extra Large Varsity I am going to continue to work with teenagers and help them grow closer to the 1A State Champion Lord. It has been a really great time here with the cheerleading program, but it is the right time to step away and develop deeper on my own personal faith journey. 2013-14 Extra Large Varsity Shannon and her husband Robbie are the proud parents of two BMC alums: 1A State Champion Matthew’10 and Mercedes’13. 2014-15 Extra Large Varsity 1A State Champion

BMC is excited to be able to utilize Coach Yarbrough’s talents in both our girls and boys programs. He will be responsible for both programs along with head coaches Dave Boehm and Larry Lanpher, in all aspects including scheduling, training (in season and off season), facility use, team building, and team philosophy. Coach Yarbrough has been meeting with the current coaches over the last month developing the open gym and summer schedules.

27 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Congratulations to David Banks ’15, National Merit Scholarship winner from BMC. The top 179 high school scholars from around the Sunshine State are winners of a 2015 college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship. They are part of approximately 2,200 students nationwide earning scholarships funded by U.S. colleges and universities. The scholarships are between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

“I am so proud of these students for working hard to earn a prestigious National Merit scholarship,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “They deserve to be recognized and I applaud their accomplishments.”

Scholarship winners began the process last year as juniors by submitting an application that included their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and future educational goals. Students were also required to provide a recommendation from a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm their perfor- DAVID BANKS ‘15 mance on a qualifying test. 35 A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

THE FUND FOR BISHOP MOORE CATHOLIC

As we begin the new academic year, we are renewed with a sense of enthusiasm. This enthusiasm is evident in the varied athletic, spiritual, academic, and social activities taking place throughout the Bishop Moore Catholic campus. As our enrollment continues to increase, we respond with expanded classrooms and an enhanced curriculum. With the support of highly qualified faculty, staff, and administration, our students continue to gain entrance to prestigious colleges and universities, and have garnered local and national attention with their many academic and athletic achievements.

We dedicate ourselves to the school’s sacred mission of providing the highest quality, affordable secondary education based on the Gospel message and Roman Catholic teachings. It is with conviction in our mission that we ask for your support for the 2015-16 annual fund, The Fund for Bishop Moore Catholic, “A family of faith. A legacy of excellence.”

Your generous, tax-deductible gift to the Fund provides continuing support for campus initiatives which tuition does not cover, giving our students and faculty the necessary tools to continue building this family of faith and legacy of excellence.

FAITH…Our Catholic faith resides at the true heart of Bishop Moore Catholic.Your support allows us to invest in programs to support our students’ growth in their faith and helps them build a strong spiritual foundation for the rest of their lives. Thomas Doyle President FAMILY…Whether it be current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff or friends, each are an integral part of the sacred mission of Bishop Moore Catholic High School. Without the support of each of these groups, the fund would not succeed.

LEGACY…As a college-preparatory school, we strive to prepare our students in mind, body, and spirit to achieve their full potential. Gifts to the annual fund directly impact each student by providing financial assistance and enhancing the overall quality of our academic, religious, and athletic programs.

Our goal of 100% alumni and parent participation can only be possible with your help. Every contribution, of any size, to The Fund for Bishop Moore Catholic makes a difference. May we as a Catholic family of faith draw strength from one another as we continue to invest in our mission for new generations to come.

God Bless You,
