2013 Annual Profile Mission Statement

To offer a home exclusively for the purpose of providing a Christian, charitable, and educational home, with love, Christian training, understanding, guidance and to meet the spiritual, as well as physical needs of boys in need of assistance. From the Board Chairman

We are excited to share with you our 2013 profile which we hope will FOUNDERS enlighten you as to the state of the Boys Farm ministry in this our fifty- Rev. WD Shealy, Jr. & Mrs. Celia S Shealy fourth year of existence. The Lord continues to provide for and to bless our BOARD OF DIRECTORS family of boys, house parents and staff. I believe that this is because of our Walter D Shealy III faith in God and our steadfast commitment to the calling and vision of our Chairman & CEO founders, Mom and Pop Shealy. of Shealy Consulting Group

Dr. Julian Boland In 1959 Pop was pastor of an inner-city church in Greenville, SC, where Boland Pharmacy he and Mom came in contact with many underprivileged and neglected Misty M West young boys. Pop said they believed that, if they could get those boys out of Executive Vice President, West Electrical, Inc. & West Development that environment and provide a safe and secure Christian home in a rural setting, they could make a difference in the lives of these boys and help Louise Shealy them heal and grow into productive citizens of our society. President Berea Hardware, Inc. They made it our mission to provide for the physical, educational, emotional and spiritual needs Mickey Crowe Senior Projects Engineer of these boys. We consistently strive to meet our mission by creating an atmosphere in which our NISH children are taught Christian family values by everyone on our campus. Russell Cook President & CEO Our boys live in homes with Christian couples and their children who by example teach our boys 4e Ventures, LLC the manner in which a strong family unit should function. We pray and believe that the values Evans Jones we teach and the examples we set will help our boys mature into loving and caring husbands and Former President & CEO Howard B. Jones & Son, Inc. fathers.

BOARD OF ADVISORS Boys Farm is a non-profit charitable children’s home dedicated to providing for boys who are in Billy O’Dell Former MLB need. But Boys Farm would not have been founded or exist today without the home missionaries who answered God’s calling to help these children. Nor could we exist without your undying Tony Cloninger Former MLB Pitcher support over all these years. We thank God every day for our staff and you, our supporters.

Bob Bolin Former MLB Pitcher In closing, we ask for your continued prayers and financial assistance in “building boys rather than mending men.” In return we promise to be good stewards of all that you and God provide. Alvin Dark Former MLB Manager Thank you for all you do and may God bless you and your families. Bobby Richardson Former MLB Walter D. Shealy III EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Board Chairman Michael A Davis

From the Executive Director

Adoption and caring for children in need is often born from very bad situations. We do not stumble upon irresistibly cute children, who are just nicely wrapped in a basket abandoned at our doorsteps. No, the reality is that there is much pain and cost throughout the process. But can you imagine how unattractive God finds us before our adoption? We are not, and never have been, easy children to deal with! The distance between our situation and that of neglected children is so small compared to the distance between ourselves and God. In our sins we were headed down the wrong path and fully condemned.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father” (Gal. 4:4-6).

God crossed a universe of cultural divides and lovingly pursued us for adoption, allowing us into his house so that we may be held in his arms and call him our father. The cost was great, even the cost of his own son Jesus Christ. But we were worth it to him! In a much smaller way, we also know the difficulty and cost in sacrificing and helping others, especially little children from painful situations. But we know that God’s loving grace is sufficient, and the end is worth it all!

Michael A. Davis Executive Director Academic Development Program Many young men come to Boys Farm in need of extra help with their studies. Often falling grades are a symptom of the larger problems that lead families to seek our help in the first place. Through a grant from our local school system, we are able to hire experienced tutors who are enthusiastic about their subject area.

Sometimes these changes are noted immediately by the teachers at school. We recently had a young man come to live at the Farm who was already enrolled in Newberry schools. Within a week, the houseparents had received an e-mail full of enthusiastic praise for their methods, noting that the young man had taken complete ownership of his work by checking to see if he could do extra credit or make-up a test he had scored poorly on. She was thrilled with the turn-around, and encouraged the houseparents to keep up the good work.

Many times boys who were performing poorly in school begin to do very well because of increased accountability. Soon, they begin to take pride in their achievements and challenge themselves to maintain good grades, simply because they enjoy doing what they never thought they were capable of before.

We keep the academic fires burning through the summer months by encouraging the boys to read. They can earn a candy bar each week for reading the allotted number of pages and there are multiple prizes awarded for the best book reports according to age level. The middle school cottage conducts a daily “Mad Math Minute” test to challenge the boys to master their multiplication facts before the next school year.

At Boys’ Farm we recognize that good academic performance can open many doors in the future. Pursuing excellence teaches the boys to overcome laziness and apathy and is yet another way we prepare them to become confident, capable adults.

Jenny Graber Academic Development Coordinator “The teachers and administration of “The tutoring program at Boy’s Farm Newberry Middle School appreciate has great commitment from the the partnership we have formed with house parents. They are dedicated to Boys Farm. Time and time again, we the academic success of each boy see immediate academic, behavioral, in their care. If a boy is not making and emotional growth in each young significant progress at school, he man that comes to us from Boys Farm. is promptly placed in the tutoring Regardless of the reasons they have program. As a teacher, I am excited moved to Boys Farm, we see consistent to have a Boy’s Farm boy in my support and positive modeling of work class because I know that I will have ethic and accountability from the Boys great parental support. That support Farm staff/families that pushes these boys translates into student success. I have into a level of maturity that they did not witnessed the benefits of the program know they had. We are always pleased this year. Boys Farm Alumni

I was the second resident, after Boys Farm’s first boy, Walter Shealy, to graduate from Newberry High School and go on to college to earn a college degree. Without Boys Farm and the generous support of early donors, I doubt if I would have ever made it through high school, much less college. The investment in continuing education for any young person at Boys Farm pays back a thousand fold in countless ways.

At that time, the children’s home did not have the resources to me with my room, board and related expenses although they did allow me to work on staff during the summer. Boys Farm gave me both a strong educational background and also a matching work ethic that allowed me to graduate debt free in four years. Of course, there were local supporters who assisted each month with my tuition while I worked two and three part time jobs on and off campus to cover my expenses. Without their generous support, I probably would never have achieved my dream.

What has been the result of a college education for me? First, over the years I have been able to give back to society by paying my fair share of taxes. Even more important, I was able to support my family and see my children graduate from college which was another first in my family. But I believe one of the greatest outcomes from having a degree and making a living has been my ability to continue to support Boys Farm financially over the years as more young men finished high school and aspired for something more. 95% of our children who stay at least one year graduate I cannot express my appreciation enough to Mom and Pop Shealy who always encouraged us from high school. to do our best and to get an education so that we could rise above the poverty and ignorance from which so many of us came. I also want to thank past, present and future donors who 100% of our children who enter see the overwhelming value of investing in these young men’s lives who just want a chance to further their education. Truly, we are helping to continue the mission of “Building Boys our College Advancement rather than Mending Men” when we help a young person graduate from high school, then go Program graduate from on to trade school or even finish college. God bless you all for your continued support of this college. ongoing miracle. Volunteers

Boys Farm has been blessed to receive the help from many volunteers over this past year. The first Saturday of November is our big Volunteer Day in which we accomplish many tasks. Throughout the year other volunteer opportunities include tutoring, activity assistants, one-on-one mentors, clerical volunteers, internships, and other opportunities. Agriculture & Environmental Program The Agriculture & Environmental Program at Boys Farm has always been an important component of helping the boys overcome the many challenges they are facing in their lives. With over 300 acres of pasture and pine forest there is plenty of space for the boys to explore and learn about their natural world. Boys Farm maintains a small herd of Black Angus cattle along with a some sheep and horses. The boys help out and participate in various ways through daily chores at the barn to livestock shows. This program has been made possible by friends & partners of Boys Farm who have donated goats and sheep and provided funds for the children to participate in livestock shows. Most recently funds were given to complete our greenhouse where the boys in each cottage take part in growing different fruits and vegetable for consumption at Boys Farm. This program has been crucial in helping the children develop character and gain knowledge about science and the environment. Financial Stewardship
