BY STAFF REPORTER he Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is threatening to report the country to the TInternational Labour Organisation (ILO) over the unilateral amendment of laws by the courts which has resulted in workers being dismissed without priors notice. In a statement the ZCTU said it is concerned by the current trend of abrupt termination of contracts of employment by employers despite the fact that it is well established in the drawn Labour Act that termination is a process to be agreed by concerned parties. Voice of the Labour Movement Comment Time to act, be counted on April 11 or a long time now, workers have been quiet as their rights continue to be trodden upon by a government which Fbelieves it has all the answers to their problems. In fact, the quietness of workers has been taken as a sign of weakness by the powers that be. It is a fact that since the government of national unity, workers of Zimbabwe have been patient with the government over its glaring anti-worker policies. The workers, we believe, were giving the government a benefit of doubt and a chance to right its wrongs, but recent developments have shown that if workers do not act, things are going to be far much worse. We have seen in recent times government officials taking it upon themselves to try to change the laws of the country at the detriment of workers. To set the ball rolling, the Minister of Finance Patrick Chinamasa started by calling on the government to amend the Labour Act to introduce labour market flexibility. He claimed that labour laws in this country favour employees at the expense of employers. His suggestions would entail that employers do as they please at the workplace, including firing and hiring of workers. Such arbitrary decision by the Minister is against the tenets of social dialogue and smacks of returning this country to the slavery era.
