A sci-fi soap opera featuring no-nonsense detective NONO, who is a composite of two females named JO and DO. JO has the mysterious ability to ingest the milk from the Madeleine Flower and enter an ethereal realm known as PURE INTUITION where she can spy on the unconscious minds of humanity. Together as NONO, JO and DO sell this info to the highest bidder in the cloud. Chris Taylor is a Canadian born artist, musician and writer with a peripatetic studio called WERK AAN ZEE. He has lived in Montreal, New York and Amsterdam doing creative work for advertising agencies. His illustrations have been seen in Vice Magazine and ad campaigns for the Rock Band video game. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California. Paul Buhle & Noah Van Sciver Johnny Appleseed Green Dreamer of the American Frontier 112-page black & white hardcover In Stores: October, 2016 ISBN: 978-1-68148-534-8 List price: $19.95 The first scholar-based comic art biography of the legendary John Chapman. Johnny Appleseed made himself famous by spreading the seeds of apple trees from Pennsylvania to Indiana. He was also an early follower of theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. Along with apple trees, he offered the seeds of nonviolence and vegetarianism, good relations with Indians, and peace among the settlers themselves. The story of John Chapman operates as a kind of counter-narrative to the glorification of violence, conquest, “winning of the West” in the story of Westward movement, and points up many of the half-myths of Johnny Appleseed’s own life and work. His apples, for instance, were prized for many reasons but mainly the making of hard cider, portable alcohol. His method of operation was a form of land speculation, purchasing potentially fertile (such as “bottom land”) acres on contract, planting saplings, and reselling the land, then moving onward. He had less interest in becoming prosperous, than in spreading his own gospel, based on visions of peace and love. Noah Van Sciver is a member of Mad Magazine’s usual gang of idiots, and the author of The Hypo and Fante Bukowski. Paul Buhle, formerly a senior lecturer at Brown University, produces radical comics. He founded the SDS Journal Radical America and the archive Oral History of the American Left and, with Mari Jo Buhle, is coeditor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left. Robert Beatty Floodgate Companion 112-page full-color paper over board In Stores: September, 2016 ISBN: 978-1-942801-98-6 List price: $24.95 “It’s that sort of artwork which looks like it was never made by anyone, it simply exists in its own realm.” —Paul Pope, Battling Boy “Airbrushed insanity” —Daniel Lopatin, Oneohtrix Point Never Floodgate Companion is comprised of previously unseen artwork recalling the heyday of paperback sci-fi, experimental animation, and the outsider realm of artist-released jazz and psychedelic records. This book brings the viewer into a world uniquely Beatty’s own, moving stylistically through ink drawings, digital airbrush paintings, and psychedelic op-art collage framed in asemic type to create a cosmic and immersive artifact. Robert Beatty emerged from the mid 2000’s American noise music underground to become one of the most sought after figures in contemporary album art, designing upwards of 75 record covers in the past 10 years. His designs include award winning album covers and logos for Tame Impala, Oneohtrix Point Never, Neon Indian, Real Estate, and Peaking Lights. In addition to album art Beatty creates installations, illustrations for publications as diverse as Lucky Peach, The Wire Magazine, and The New York Times. His artwork and design has been featured in the art comic anthologies Mould Map and Kramers Ergot. Robert was the first artist featured in Pitchfork.tv’s documentary series “Pitchfork Unsung”, focusing on individuals who’ve made significant contributions to music but remain outside the spotlight. Kilian Eng Object 15 Works by Kilian Eng 80-page paper over board In Stores: September, 2016 ISBN: 978-1-942801-80-1 List price: $24.95 Object 15 is the third collection in Kilian Eng’s successful monograph series, following the acclaimed books Object 5 and Object 10. Kilian’s images present alternate worlds where the environment plays a great role. Many of these sequences present visual stories, without any text. He is fascinated with the details that can create these imaginative worlds; colors and lighting, dimensions and sounds. His inspiration comes from classic and futuristic architecture, surreal- ism, science fiction as well as natural and urban landscapes. “Since most of the work in the book has been drawn in the computer environment I was glad and surprised how the images opened up in a new way when I saw them in the printed form. There is definitely something happening when you can see the work on paper instead of on the screen. It is really the ultimate way to look and get to know the artwork.” —Kilian Eng Kilian Eng is one of the most popular and acclaimed digital illustrators working today. His prints of dreamy landscapes and his retro futuristic style are admired by many. He is known for his Mondo poster series, designing posters for Game Of Thrones, Argo, Jodorowsky’s Dune, and Sony Playstation. He has also designed many acclaimed album covers including soundtracks for Aliens, Oblivion and The Knick. Kilian earned a Bachelor and Masters in Graphic Design & Illustration from Konstfack, University of Arts Craft & Design in Stockholm and has won numerous awards for his illustrative work. • Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations)
From Inclusion to Transformation: Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations) Frances Amelia Howes Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Rhetoric and Writing Katrina M. Powell, Chair Paul Heilker James M. Dubinsky Kelly Belanger Malea Powell June 27, 2014 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: rhetoric, comics, feminism, decolonial, composition Copyright 2014 From Inclusion to Transformation: Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations) Frances Amelia Howes ABSTRACT Feminist rhetorics need to move us from inclusion to transformation: instead of “including” more and more marginalized groups into the scholarly status quo, or “including” comics into methods of analysis that we already use, we need to transform our practices themselves. Seeing comics research as an expedition into comics doesn't work. The spatial metaphor is failing because it's analogous to a takeover in the colonial sense. I center the both/and experience of being a producer of comics and analyst of them. Drawing from a critical reading of my own comic, I describe “the disobedient how,” a way of learning from transgressive models. I argue that instead of “collecting” comics, decolonial feminist methodology asks that we “attend” comics through listening, experiencing, and having a relationship with them and their creators. As Shawn Wilson's work suggests, knowledge lies in relationships. I use this concept to guide an analysis of Lynda Barry’s recent comics work as well as her comments during a panel at the Comics: Philosophy and Practice conference. In order for academics to have true knowledge about Barry’s work, we must have a right relationship to her and to it, which requires decolonizing our relationship to texts and taking Barry’s comics seriously as sources of theory.

Editorial issue 8 2 In this issue we welcome aboard Ian Horton on the editorial team. Ian is Contextual and Theoretical Studies Coordinator for the Design School at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. He has a broad range of experience with comics research that focuses on two main areas, issues of national identity in British comic books and informational/educational comics. In collaboration with Lydia Wysocki and John Swogger in 2014 he was a founder member of the Applied Comics Network which focuses on making and using applied comics - bringing comics and information together. He has recently published work on multiculturalism and stereotypes in British comics, the relationship between art history and Comics Studies and is currently working on a book chapter titled ‘Info-Comics, Science (Fiction) and Public Engagement’. In his academic life outside of Comics Studies he has just completed a book titled Hard Werken: One for All – Graphic Art and Design 1979-1994 about the Dutch graphic design group Hard Werken to be published by Valiz in Summer 2017. Ian will be working on some of the forthcoming special issues and in some of the general articles. In this issue general issue the themes of the articles overlap in issues of comics production, readership and aesthetics. In “De/facing race: towards a model for a universal World Comics,” Jeeshan Gazi recounts the attempts by Kodansha, the largest publisher of manga in Japan, to create ‘World Comics’ – ‘a comics style that would be universal, the style of the twenty-first century understood by all readers’ by recruiting foreign artists.
