ARTISTS AND PAINTERS Tuesday, August 11 at 7:30 pm

The process of enjoying art is different for everyone. The process of creating art is just as diverse.

On this Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, we feature four local artists and painters, ranging in age and style. Each of these creative minds shares how they approach their work and what inspires them.

O‘ahu’s Jasper Wong and Kamea Hadar are leaders of the collective known as POW! WOW! Hawai‘i. Some of the most Jasper Wong and Kamea Hadar visible efforts by the group are the large murals on buildings throughout the Kaka‘ako neighborhood of .

Hadar says, “I think my parents definitely instilled the work ethic that I have and then, the reach for the stars kind of attitude that is necessary to be an artist and to do big things like this.”

And according to Wong, “I would just draw all day long. It was always something that I did growing up.”

Another featured artist is Honolulu’s Pegge Hopper. Her Pegge Hopper paintings of Hawaiian women started as something she did in her spare time. But after being fired from a job, her artwork launched a new career. “I describe myself as more successful than I ever, ever imagined I was going to be,” says Hopper.

You’ll also hear from 88-year-old abstract artist Harry Tsuchidana. The Waipahu, O‘ahu native is still expressing his creative vision using a pretty straightforward approach. “Hollywood wait for inspiration. I chase the buggah,” says Tsuchidana. Harry Tsuchidana
