Royals Notes - Los Angeles Angels @ Kansas City Royals - Sunday, April 16, 2017

This & That DUPER SUPER TO START ‘17--Kansas City’s replay specialist, Bill Duplissea was quiet for the first four games of 2017, but has been busy (and successful) in five of the last seven, forging reversals each time out, making him 5-for-5 to open the season...the most recent last night against the Angels, when replay proved that Martin Maldonado was indeed out at first base to end the fifth inning...1:28 later, New York agreed with Duplissea and flipped the on-field decision...Dupe also had a pair of overturns in the Oakland series to open this homestand, as well a pair of calls flipped last weekend in Houston...Dupe closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good of 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31).

OH SOLO WE-O--The good news is that the Royals have already clubbed 15 home runs in the first 11 games, four more than a season ago at this time...the mediocre news is that last night’s blasts by Brandon Moss and Mike Moustakas upped KC’s solo homer total to 13...the lone blasts with anybody aboard to this point was Moose’s 2-run shot in the first inning here on Friday night to give the Royals a lead they never relinquished and Eric Hosmer’s 2-run blast a week ago last night during a 6-run eighth inning in Houston.

RISP’S STILL UNREWARDING--Kansas City went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position last night, with Eric Hosmer knocking home the tying run in the first inning on a single to left...on the year, the Royals are hitting .159 (11-for-69) in scoring position situations, which is currently 28th among all big league clubs...this is unchartered territory for the Royals, who finished fourth in the A.L. last year with a .273 mark with runners in scoring position, after finishing second in the loop in both 2015 (.281) and 2014 (.271).

DUFFY AND HIS K’S--For every strikeout that he records in 2017, Danny Duffy will donate $500 to Noah’s Bandage Project, a local foundation that provides fun bandages to kids and raises money for pediatric cancer research...through three starts, he’s on the hook for $8,500 with 17 strikeouts to this point, including a half- dozen here on Friday night…Danny recorded 188 strikeouts in 2016, the most by a left-handed pitcher in KC history, Bill Butler’s 156 K’s in 1969.

LOVIN’ THOSE LEFTIES--The southpaw duo of Danny Duffy and Jason Vargas are off to outstanding starts as the 2017 season unfolds...each at 2-0 on the year, the twosome has combined for 33.2 innings allowing only 24 hits and five runs (all earned) with nine walks and 31 strikeouts for a 1.34 ERA...Duff’s win on Friday night extended his club record Kauffman Stadium unbeaten streak to 16 starts with last night’s performance, posting an 8-0 record and 3.55 ERA (38 earned runs in 102.0 innings) during the skein...he has not been defeated in “The K” since September 5, 2015...as for Vargas, who was a winner here on Thursday vs. the A’s with 7.2 scoreless frames, he has recorded a 1.40 ERA in his five starts since being deemed ready to perform last September after undergoing surgery in July, 2015.

HOMEWORK--With wins in the first two games of this series and a victory on Thursday vs. Oakland, the Royals are now 3-2 in this opening homestand with three games to play...following an day off tomorrow, the homestand will conclude with the first Interleague test of the new year as San Francisco comes to “The K” for a pair of night games on Tuesday and Wednesday in what will be the Giants first visit to town since the 2014 World Series...Kansas City will hit the road for a week following the Giants’ series, traveling to Arlington for four games and then to Chicago for three with the White Sox...after the visit Chi-Town, KC will start a stretch from April 28-May 18 in which it will host 17 of 21 games here in Kauffman Stadium, the only break a 4-game trip to Tampa Bay on May 8-11.

YEAR #49 AT THE MIC--The 2007 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, Denny Matthews was in the broadcast booth on April 8, 1969 when delivered a 12th inning single to give Kansas City a win in the first game in franchise history against these Twins and the veteran announcer is back in the booth here in Minnesota for his 49th season behind the microphone...Ryan Lefebvre, who will once again work both the TV and radio side during the year, is calling his 19th opener since joining the Royals...Steve Physioc in his sixth season in the broadcast booth for the Royals and Steve Stewart will anchor the pre and post-game as well as in-game updates all season, while also providing the play-by-play call on many occasions, his 10th season with KC...Don Free controls the dials for a 32nd and final season as the producer/engineer.
