St. Louis Chapter Operates Its Eighth “To The Capitol...By Private Car” Trip

he St. Louis Chapter ran its eighth annual T private car trip to Washington DC June 2 -9. Instead of our traditional Wednesday de- parture we changed it to Monday due to the availability of our private car, the Pullman sleeper Cimarron River. A full load of 15 passengers from as far away as Wichita, Kans., and Colorado Springs, Colo., and one car attendant participated in the journey.

Amtrak Lincoln Service train 306 coupled onto Cimarron River and departed St. Louis at 5:30 pm on Monday June 2, arriving in Chi- cago late that evening. After spending Tues- day exploring Chicago we departed for the nation’s capitol at 5:45 pm on Amtrak train 50 - the Cardinal. Though most of the trip was under cloudy skies the scenery along the Ohio River, through the New River Gorge, and over The passengers — all but three — assemble for a group photo in Washington DC the Allegheny Mountains was enjoyed by all Union Station before departing on the Capitol Limited. on board, especially from the vestibule of Cimarron River. Our arri- we met two westbound empty coal trains and the westbound val into Washington Union Station was about two hours and thirty minutes late and accompanied by a brief rain shower, but Amtrak had us parked on the private car track in short order.

The three days in Washington were marked by wonder- ful June weather. Many people took advantage of the delightful evenings by touring the city’s monuments after dark. One person even traveled to New York City for a day of sightseeing. To make things interesting, our car was parked with Amtrak’s Corridor Clipper and their business car 10001. We were later joined by the private car Silver Foot.

Our time in the capitol had to end and we departed for Chicago Saturday afternoon behind train 29 – the Capi- tol Limited. The weather was beautiful as we headed up the Potomac River Valley right on time. Finally, at 1:00 am, after a two hour delay, we were allowed to proceed and those of us who were on the vestibule of Cimarron River got a close up and personal view of the derailment. A few miles after passing the wreck we had to do a reverse move to get on the correct track to take us to Pittsburgh’s Amtrak station. All in all we were about 2½ hours late arriving in Pitts- burgh. Heavy freight traffic and signal problems in Indiana prevented us from making up time and thus we were about three hours late arriving in Chicago Tuesday morning.

Several of the passengers disembarked in Chicago to make connections for their home while the balance spread out taking in the sights of the Windy City.
