From The Churches St. Gregory's Church Thoughts from the Methodist Minister: In the month of September many churches, schools and other groups will share in ‘Harvest Festival’ Services. We will probably sing hymns like, ‘Come ye thankful people, come’ and, ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ and churches will be specially decorated with flowers, fruits and vegetables from gardens and allotments (along with tins, packets and jars these days). These customs are familiar to many of us and we may think they go back to the dawn of time! However, this style of Harvest Thanksgiving is comparatively modern in this country, going back to 1843, when the Rev Robert Hawker invited parishioners to a special thanksgiving service at his church in Worwenstow, Cornwall. Before then harvests were of course celebrated, but festivities were more often held in field or barn rather than in church. Services & Events for September 2016 Today we are increasingly distanced from our food production (even in Sunday 4th Feast of St Gregory the Great the countryside). St. Gregory’s C.E.VA Primary School The last few weeks at St Gregory’s have been busy for all children and staff. Our environmental area is open and everyone is enjoying using it thanks to the hard work of Mr Williams. Not only does it contain our storytelling area but a reflective quiet area, a fire pit, wooden seating, our home bred ducks, secret little corners for den building and a cleared out and newly fenced pond. Pilwell class had a great time toasting marshmallows on the open fire which they built themselves and Pleck class have decorated our old oak tree with some lovely clay faces. There are lots more plans to enable the children to take their learning outside in the new term. Our story telling chair which we were able to purchase using a donation from a very kind parent, is being used on a daily basis, with children retelling and acting out stories in our story area. St. Mary’s Catholic School St. Mary’s Explorers - Foundation Stage Unit As from September 1st 2016, St Mary’s Explorers, our Foundation Stage Unit, will be led by an experienced, fully qualified teacher. Mrs Ellie Myatt takes on the reigns from September and has been busy over the summer renovating both the indoor and outdoor environment. Ellie is an experienced early years teacher with three children of her own. The unit allows preschool and Reception children to work together on lots of key areas of learning, something that OfSTED agree allows younger children to make greater progress. St Mary’s had a busy end to the academic year in July. The whole school put on a musical performance of Wind in the Willows. The adventures of Toad, Mole, Ratty and Badger were told by some of our Year 6 children with every other child, right down to our pre-schoolers, taking on a role in the show.

The unit has a huge outdoor play area which can be accessed freely and children have an extensive choice of wheeled toys, outdoor activities and a mud kitchen. There are guinea-pigs and fish that the children care for along with role play and art areas. The emphasis is on child initiated learning through play. The children have a kitchen area where they can produce their own healthy snacks on a daily basis and even wash up their own plates and cutlery! St Mary’s Explorers is open from 8:45am – 3:15pm every week day during term time and spaces are available for children aged 3 years +. If you would Sports Day was a huge success! The whole school took part in a range like to have a look around, or come and stay for a taster session, please call of activities. We finished sports day with hotdogs and ice-cream organised by the Friends of St Mary’s. The children in year 5/6 had an amazing time at this year’s residential trip to Leeson House. They walked the coasts, dipped the ponds and negotiated around the area with maps to name a few activities. All were incredibly well behaved and supportive of each other and we were very proud of all they achieved. We were lucky enough to have the Dorset Safer Schools team spend the day at school teaching the children across the school how to keep themselves safe on the internet. They also spent time with parents and staff looking at some of the apps and games available to children, pointing out the dangers of some of these. For any further information, please follow the link visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk. After what has been a fantastic year, we say goodbye to our amazing Year 6 children, wishing them well as they move to Secondary schools and look forward to starting the new academic year! Best wishes, Charlotte Targett Head teacher

It was very interesting to see how everyone interacted with them. They all seemed to enjoy them and it was another successful day. Back in June we did the Barnardo’s big toddle and I am pleased to say we raised a total of £447.00. Well done to everyone who was involved. Coming up over the next month we have Usborne books coming on 8th September. We have a pre-loved sale at the village hall on Saturday 17th September, at 10:30 - 12:30 all proceeds go to the toddler group, so please come and have a look. Then on 29th September we are doing a sponsored walk round the Looking for childcare or need help recreation ground to raise money for the flower arrangements for St with childcare costs?
