Gillenwater, Wesley two of WAC's best Project: 2011 Date: 1/21/2011 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) Journalist: Jason Groves City: Las Cruces State: NM

Jan. 21--LAS CRUCES -- Troy Gillenwater describes Utah State's as the leader and best player on the USU roster.

"He's their guy now," said Gillenwater, New Mexico State's junior power forward. "Last year (point guard Jared) Quayle was their guy. This year, (Wesley is) the focal point. They are looking to him. He brings leadership."

Sound familiar?

Gillenwater has emerged as a leader for the 10-10 Aggies. Gillenwater leads the Western Athletic Conference in scoring with 19.7 points per game and is tied with Wesley for fifth in rebounding with 7.5 per game.

"I can relate to the different role, but me and Tai Wesley are different players," Gillenwater said. "He's more of a back-to-the basket power forward and I think I'm more of a face-up power forward. I might be just a tad bit more versatile."

Wesley has always been a productive player at Utah State, but prior to Quayle, he played with two WAC Player of the Year players in Jaycee Carroll and Gary Wilkinson.

"I've seen (Wesley) all four years," said Aggies coach Marvin Menzies, whose team is 4-2 in WAC play entering Saturday's game at 6-0 Utah State. "He has definitely grown up and taken ownership of this team. You can see it in how he plays. He makes shots but he plays within himself."

Saturday's game tips at 9 p.m., and is available on ESPNU.

Gillenwater scored 22 points in a 90-71 loss at Nevada on Thursday as the Aggies fell to 4-2 in league play.

"Gillenwater is a great player and he's very hard to guard," Wesley said. "He's really got it all. And he's a big strong body. I'm definitely looking forward to the matchup."

Wesley scored 14 points in a 74-57 home win over Louisiana Tech on Thursday. It was Utah State's record 20th straight regular season conference win.

"I don't think it's surprising, we've had good teams and we are well coached with high-character guys," Wesley said. "The record is something that we can look back on when we are 50, but we are really not too caught up in it.

"We know (NMSU) well. We remember last year and are looking forward to playing them."

NMSU was the last WAC team to beat Utah State, defeating the UtAgs 69-63 in last year's WAC Tournament championship game in Reno, Nev.

"It's a testament to what (UtAgs coach) Stew Morrill has done over the years and the support that he has had to do it," Menzies said. "Hopefully we can put an end to the streak."

Wesley has continued to improve throughout his career in Logan, grabbing 9.1 rebounds per game to go with 14.5 points per game.

As his comfort level in Morrill's offense has grown, so has his production. Wesley is tied with Idaho's Kyle Barone atop the conference in shooting percentage at 62 percent. Wesley entered the weekend ranked fifth nationally in percentage.

"It's a product of the system that Coach Morrill has set up and it's a product of my guards," Wesley said. "They rely on me and get me the ball where I feel comfortable."

Both teams run their offense through the power forward position, but they are different players.

Gillenwater is more comfortable on the perimeter and shooting the 3 while Wesley prefers to work on the .

When they are matched up against each other on Saturday, a national audience will see two of the top three players in the WAC going at each other.

"He's the preseason player of the year for a reason," Gillenwater said. "Obviously, people think he is the best player in this conference. I'm looking forward to showing different."

Aggies set to host Utah State in WAC battle Project: 2011 Date: 1/21/2011 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) Journalist: Teddy Feinberg City: Las Cruces State: NM

Jan. 21--LAS CRUCES -- Teams can look at standings in mid-January.

Or they can take care of the business in front of them.

For the New Mexico State Aggie women's basketball program, it's a little bit of both.

Saturday night against Utah State is a good starting point, as NMSU looks to snap a two-game losing streak while picking up their first home win of the 2010-11 conference schedule.

"Right now we're trying to take care of our homecourt," senior point guard Madison Spence said. "You got to win all those if you want to compete in conference. We can't afford to lose anymore here."

The Aggies fell to Nevada 65-46 on Jan. 12 at the Pan American Center before losing on the road to Fresno State 76-49. The two defeats dropped NMSU to 8-10 overall, 2-2 in league play.

The .500 record within the Western Athletic Conference has the Aggies in a five-way tie for third place, along with Nevada, Boise State, Idaho and Utah State.

NMSU hosts Utah State on Saturday at 7 p.m. while Boise State will travel to Idaho. First-place Louisiana Tech will play at home against Nevada, meaning an Aggie win would put NMSU in the top-half of the conference.

"If we want to be one of those front-tier teams in the WAC, we've got to get this one," junior guard Kaitlyn Soto said.

Head coach Darin Spence said that while the game does matter in the conference race, the Aggies need a win no matter the circumstances.

"We've got to take care of ourselves and be a lot more excited to play at home," he said. "We haven't embraced the idea of playing here yet. There's been something missing. Now it's time for us to take another step."

Playing Utah State should be a good matchup for NMSU.

After starting the year 0-4, Utah State currently sits at 8-9 on the season. Prior to its 91-74 loss at Louisiana Tech, Utah State beat Nevada 81-69, a win that caught NMSU's attention.

"That right there tells us we've got to bring our A-game," Soto said.

The team is led by junior-college transfer Ashlee Brown, who's averaging a team-high 14.8 points per game and 9 rebounds per contest.

Sophomore guard Devyn Christensen has come on in a reserve role, averaging 17.3 points per game during conference play.

New Mexico State, on the other hand, has three players averaging around 13 points a night -- guards Jasmine Lowe (13.8) and Madison Spence (13.4) along with post player Tabytha Wampler (13.1).

Wampler is having arguably the best season of any Aggie. Along with her point production she's contributing 8.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 47 percent from the field and 86 percent from the foul line.

"We've both won some games we shouldn't have and we've lost some games we shouldn't have," Darin Spence said of NMSU and Utah State. "We're real comparable.

"It will just come down to who has fewer mistakes. And who capitalizes."

Bill Blankenship completes TU football staff Project: 2011 Date: 1/21/2011 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Tulsa World (OK) Journalist: Eric Bailey City: Tulsa State: OK

Jan. 21--Bill Blankenship introduced the final pieces of his Tulsa football staff on Friday afternoon.

The new head coach announced that Brent Guy will be the team's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Adam Blankenship as the defensive ends coach and Holmon Wiggins as the running backs coach.

"We've been able to complete our staff and get most of the gentlemen we had hoped to work with for a long time," Bill Blankenship said. "How did it happen so quickly? We had plans and prepared for this day for a long time."

Greg Peterson (offensive coordinator and receivers), Denver Johnson (offensive line) and Scott Downing (assistant head coach, tight ends) were named to the staff earlier this week. Remaining coaches from the previous staff include Van Malone (secondary, recruiting coordinator), Jess Loepp (secondary) and Archie McDaniel (defensive tackles).

Guy comes to TU after one season as the linebacker coach and recruiting coordinator at UNLV. He was a defensive coordinator previously at Louisville (2009), Arizona State (2001-04) and Boise State (1998-2000). He was a head coach at Utah State from 2005-08.

Adam Blankenship spent the past two seasons as the defensive line coach at Union High School. The youngest son of head coach Bill Blankenship, he played at Illinois State and Nebraska.

Wiggins spent the past five years at Illinois State (2006-10) as the team's running backs coach. He also spent three years as a student coach or graduate assistant for three seasons.

Clint Rountree has been promoted to the Director of High School relations, and James Kilian will guide the quarterbacks from a graduate assistant role. Blair Philbrick remains as the team's director of football operations.

Morrill happy as Aggies keep rolling Project: 2011 Date: 1/21/2011 Media Type: Online Tone: Positive Outlet: Deseret Morning News Journalist: Brad Rock, Deseret News City: Salt Lake City State: UT

LOGAN ? Smack in the middle of another dominating (Don't use that word!) season, Stew Morrill continues to, well, stew.

He worries that his will hit what he calls the "dog days" of the basketball season and lose focus. He notes that they "played with no energy, no heart," three weeks ago in a tougher-than-necessary win over San Jose State, and because his team was "horrible against the press at Boise State."

He even stews because he stews too ...

HIGHER EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY COME TOGETHER TO BETTER IDAHO Project: 2011 Date: 1/21/2011 Media Type: Newswire Tone: Positive Outlet: US Federal News Journalist: n/a City: National State: n/a

MOSCOW, Idaho, Jan. 21 -- The University of Idaho issued the following news release:

Some of the best and brightest minds in higher education and the engineering industry came together at the University of Idaho Boise. The Engineering Joint Advisory Board was facilitated by engineering deans from the University of Idaho, Boise State University and Idaho State University. It's a collaborative effort to help facilitate the transfer of knowledge of university research into economic development for the betterment of the state.

"Our discussions focused on how universities, state government and the private sector can benefit by increased collaboration in transferring knowledge we generate to the public. said Don Blackketter, dean of the University of Idaho College of Engineering. "The State's institutions continue to make significant progress on a number of fronts in helping increase our contribution to the regions and the economy."

Research at the University of Idaho's main Moscow campus and its statewide centers and research facilities has great potential for application to real- world situations. University of Idaho researchers -- including faculty and students -- collaborate with colleagues at the state's other higher education institutions on projects including nanotechnology and biomedical research. A next step for some is how to turn research and innovation into products that can spur economic development.

The College of Engineering deans hope to form a partnership between innovation and industry, putting academic minds together with industry to develop and commercialize new technologies. Blackketter says the model for the partnership is found in the USTAR program, a joint venture between Utah State University and University of Utah Researchers.

The Engineering Joint Advisory Board supports Governor Otter's Idaho Innovation Council, made up of public and private representatives who work on strategies and challenges related to innovation-based economic development.

The Engineering Joint Advisory Board meets as a group that meets on a biennial basis and is used to promote statewide collaboration between the engineering programs and their respective advisory boards.

University deans on the board include: Don Blackketter, dean, University of Idaho College of Engineering; Cheryl Schrader, dean, Boise State University College of Engineering; and George Imel, dean, Idaho State University College of Science and Engineering.
