A five-storey laboratory wing boasts acoustic chambers for bat research, an insectarium, labs for studying ant and bee behaviour, spectroscopy and microscope rooms. Peter Cole, Regional Director for VINCI Construction UK, said: “The unique facilities within Life Sciences will enhance students’ learning and enable them to be part of a globally- led research and development hub. We are delighted to have been involved with this prestigious project for the University of Bristol and would like to thank all associated with the project for their support in achieving its successful completion.” The space around the building has also been redesigned thanks to Nicholas Pearson Associates, with 21 trees and 3,215m2 of shrubs and grasses. The development site consists of a 0.9 hectare area on the corner of Tyndalls Avenue and St. Michaels Hill, in the heart of the University’s precinct. Two Grade II listed features of the site were retained – the frontage of the former Children's Hospital and the Ivy Gate which leads to Royal Fort House and gardens, a nationally significant archaeological site having been developed as a bastioned fort during the English Civil war in 1642.

Patrick Finch, Bursar at the University of Bristol, said: “This building and its surrounding public realm has represented the most ambitious project taken on by the University's Estates Office to-date. “That it has now been successfully handed over to form a wonderful new home for staff and students is a testimony to a strong ethos of team working between staff in Estates and in the School of Biological Sciences, consultants and contractors. I am immensely proud of the team's achievement, which should set a standard in the sector for many years to come.” This flagship project showcases the best in sustainable design and energy efficiency and it has been designed to achieve the environmental accreditation BREEAM Excellent and represents a major part of the University’s drive to provide energy-efficient laboratories. Heat from the laboratories’ ventilation systems is reclaimed and re-used; rainwater collected from the roof is used to flush the toilets; blinds lower automatically when the sun shines and lighting has been designed to avoid pollution of the night sky. To reflect the research being carried out inside, the exterior of the building is home to a striking vertical garden, called a living wall, which stands over 20m above street level. It is home to 11 different species of plant, plus boxes for birds and bats, and creates the pattern of a microscope image of algal cells. A state-of-the-art greenhouse, known as a GroDome, sits on top of the building and is capable of recreating tropical conditions thanks to controlled light, humidity and temperature. The Life Sciences building also has one of the largest teaching labs in the country, capable of teaching 200 students at once. There are multiple screens to ensure all students can see, close-up, what the lecturer is doing while moveable walls can change the size of the teaching space. CV225 FIRERAY clears condensation With the onset of autumn, lower temperatures can cause condensation to form on detector lenses and reflective prisms. This obscures the lens and prism, reducing the amount of infrared (IR) light reaching the detector. This has a similar effect to smoke and can lead to unwanted false alarms. To combat this issue, Fire Fighting Enterprises (FFE) has developed a new range of anti-condensation heaters for its FIRERAY range of optical beam smoke detectors and reflective prisms. The detector heater circulates a current of warm air over the lens, raising its ambient temperature by up to 10°C and maintaining the lens at an incrementally higher temperature than the surrounding air. This dramatically reduces the likelihood of condensation forming on the lens which, in turn, reduces the potential for false alarms.

Kooltherm FireSleeve launched Limiting the spread of smoke and fire is a key consideration for any building owner. To ensure maximum protection, Kingspan Tarec has unveiled the Kooltherm FireSleeve, a slim solution which expands to several times its normal size in the event of fire, helping to seal service penetrations and reinstate the original fire rating of a building element. The Kooltherm FireSleeve comprises an intumescent layer inside a stainless steel facing and is sealed at both ends with compressible rings. When exposed to high levels of heat, the intumescent layer swells and forms a hard char which closes any gaps between the pipework and the penetration edge. The product achieves a two-hour fire integrity rating to BS EN 1366 and is particularly suited for use on fire rated constructions where inadequately sealed building service penetrations can act as a channel for smoke CV227 and flames.

DECC leads by example in energy-saving washroom upgrades

Building owners and facilities managers can make their buildings more sustainable by following the example of the Government department responsible for helping the UK reduce energy consumption. Peter Jackson, business development manager at LowEnergyHandDryers.com explains...

The Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC) has and disposing of waste. It also wanted to reduce energy improved its own sustainability credentials by replacing consumption of hand dryers by installing the lowest power inefficient hand dryers and paper towels in washrooms rated solutions available and cutting usage of power when throughout its offices – and the results are significant. in standby mode. As part of its Greening Government Commitments, which set ambitious targets for the range of Government activities across 21 central Government departments, amongst others, the DECC sustainability team is continuously reviewing five key target areas – greenhouse gas emissions, domestic flights, waste, paper consumption and water consumption. In 2012, DECC explored the potential with its facilities management company, Interserve, to find the most energy efficient, sustainable and user-friendly replacement hand dryers for its numerous washrooms throughout its HQ buildings – 3 Whitehall Place and 55 Whitehall. DECC identified a number of key requirements which could be measured in order to assess payback and projected savings. Firstly, it wanted to eliminate paper towels and reduce waste The removal of paper disposal costs, as well as the towels cut waste number of man-hours by 8.2 tonnes involved in collecting “Peter Jackson LowEnergyHandDryers.com CV270 Finally, DECC wanted to improve the washrooms’ environment savings on the order of £18,000 per annum, representing rapid for staff and minimise noise levels. payback.” The actual payback period was calculated to be only Cut and dried solution 17.2 months (based on DECC’s five-day working week). cool innovation

It’s a time of great change for the ventilation sector. Against the backdrop of increasing health, safety and energy-efficiency legislation, revised Building Regulations and an upturn in commercial and consumer gravitation towards sustainability, the ventilation category has benefited from a dramatic increase in demand. The result has been an explosion of new and exceptionally innovative products and this is just the beginning, as John-Paul Bailey, product manager for heating and ventilation at Newey & Eyre explains...

There is no doubt about it; ventilation is big business. While once a relatively stagnant product area, the ventilation category has crept quietly out of the recession as an innovation leader. In fact, according to the most recent AMA reports the HVAC market in the UK stands at an estimated total value of more than £1bn at manufacturer’s prices, a large part of which can be attributed to the growing demand for ventilation.

So, why is it that there’s now so much money in this particular product sector? The first reason is a growing awareness about the importance of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). With the arrival of the revised Building Regulations Part L in 2010 resulting in a greater airtightness of buildings, there has been a newly found focus on the impact of air quality on health and wellbeing; not just in accordance with the revised Part F, but all round.

Then, of course, there’s been the onslaught of legislation; the ErP Directive, ODS Regulation, the CODE for Sustainable Homes, SAP, the imminent Green Investment Bank, to name but a few, not to mention a number of Government green incentives.

And so, collectively such factors have driven the UK to be a much more environmentally-conscious nation, bringing with it a huge market shift from traditional ventilation products to low-carbon alternatives. The onus then is on architects, contractors and installers to get to grips with the newest developments and, in turn, reap the financial benefits – today. A good example is continuous running ventilation systems such as MEV (Mechanical Extract Ventilation) or MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) which have previously been the preserve of new build properties or those undergoing major refurbishments due to the need for long runs of ducting to individual rooms from a centrally sited unit. However, these technologies are now available for single room applications and are designed to easily retro-fit existing 4” and 6” fans.

One of the fast emerging solutions of the moment is the decentralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation (dMEV) fan, which provides an effective yet simple way of improving a building’s ventilation and air quality. Designed to work with natural air infiltration, these continuous running fans control the air path through the home. They prevent the migration of damaging humidity and pollutants, and are suitable for retrofitting.

More so, BEAMA’s guidance Avoiding Indoor Air Quality Problems Associated with Fabric Improvements challenges Green Deal roviders to specify continuous ventilation with insulation packages to ensure good indoor air quality. Thus, with the Government recently announcing a new £100m budget for the next phase of the Green Deal home CV325 improvement fund, sales of continuous dMEV systems, which are already growing in popularity, are set to soar.

There are various products on the market which control humidity and ventilation ranging from Lo-Carbon Centra from Vent-Axia (recently awarded the Quiet Mark by the Noise Abatement Society (NAS)), through to Vent-Axia’s Lo-Carbon Tempra which offers a balanced ventilation system (i.e. both intake and extract) for a single room through to the Tempra which incorporates a manual summer bypass to ensure that when it is warm outside, it operates on extract only. This extract-only setting helps keep occupants cool by closing off the intake from outside. The HVAC market in the UK Times are changing. Amid the backdrop of an increasingly stands at an estimated total regulated society and heightened onus on energy efficiency, there is a much greater demand for ventilation solutions value of more than £1bn at which bring benefits that include legislative compliance, “manufacturer’s prices energy efficiency, healthy air quality and, in turn, a happy customer. Therefore, for the shrewd installer looking to tap www.amaresearch.co.uk into this new profit potential, it is time to get on board with the newest ventilation solutions and go with the flow.

As legislation around automatic doors becomes ever more complex, liability is no longer the preserve of just the manufacturer and installer but is shared across the entire supply chain. Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK, provides us with a rundown on the regulations that architects, contractors and other specifiers should be aware of when they are specifying automatic doors and entrances...

Everyone in the supply chain bears some responsibility for the overall safety of a powered door and they are all liable if there is an accident and due diligence can’t be proven or the paperwork is not in place. Under the new EN 16005 standard, architects are responsible for specifying the right product for particular locations and applications. They need to ascertain potential danger points on automatic doors and whether features such as sensors, anti-finger trap systems or barriers should be used. They are also responsible for ensuring the products specified are CE marked and that the manufacturer has verified that they meet safety requirements. The regulation has introduced a number of specific measurements that must be complied with, which represent an increase on those specified within the previous BS 7036 standard. Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems team up with Scottish Power in Cumbria Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems; with their approved fabricator Formes Alutek Ltd recently completed a new build office building which forms part of ‘The West of Duddon Offshore Windfarm’, a JV project between Scottish Power Renewables and Dong Energy. The project comprises of an onshore substation, 108 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 389 megawatts and brand new bespoke Operations & Management office facilities based at West of Duddon Sands, Barrow-in-Furness. A striking curved facade was installed and Comar 6EFT 4sided SG with concealed vents was selected as it provides a structurally glazed curtain walling solution with EPDM or Silicon seals which creates facets at 7.5° increments convex or concave. Comar EFT 4 sided offers architects the opportunity to maximise large glazed areas as it has the slimmest glazing seals available on the market. In a busy office environment, Comar 7 door sets are a natural choice. Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto- sliding and sliding/folding, they have been designed specifically for retail applications where high traffic solutions are required. For safety, the Comar 7 swing doors were fitted with anti-finger trap stiles and Axim concealed transom closers which were hung directly from the Comar 6EFT curtain wall again enforcing the reduced the sight lines. The project was completed using Comar 5P.i top hung windows. The Comar 5P.i window system uses trademarked Polyamide Insulated (P.i) that provides exceptional thermal performance in a market where energy efficient designs and meeting the demands of the latest building regulations are paramount. All configurations, such as casement, top swing reversible, pivot, tilt and turn and sliding can be manufactured. Solar shading was a key consideration on the southern elevations of this project; therefore to shade the façade vertically hung Comar Duco-sun C was specified. The blades, rafters and struts are all part of the unique Ducosun multi-fit system which allows fast track installation with its “clicks & glide” assembly. building boards braving the elements

Now that the UK is experiencing more extreme weather events and with the implementation of more stringent Building Regulations, specifying the right building board system for the job is vital. Even where specialist advice is available, a working knowledge of regulations and performance is crucial to making the right design and specification decisions. Ian Quinton, managing director of RCM – suppliers of building boards and façade solutions to such high profile developments as the University of Hertfordshire – outlines some considerations when specifically looking at the design requirements for structural timber buildings.

rooflights and the architecture of light

It stimulates the eye and mind, is free and doesn’t require electricity so there is no denying that natural light is a fundamental element of contemporary architecture. From energy savings and improved occupant comfort to greater productivity in commercial applications, the positive effect of daylight is a widely acknowledged fact across the construction industry. Hayley Lowry from Brett Martin Daylight Systems looks at regulatory compliance and the proven benefits of natural light through the specification of rooflights...

Rooflight The highest acceptable rooflight U-value permissible manufacturers invest much time and effort into achieving in Part L is 2.2W/m²K. It is worth noting though that if all various design and performance standards to give clients elements specified in Part L operated to their worst peace of mind – so it is vital that architects, clients and acceptable standard, a building would not meet its overall contractors use their expertise. Working with a member of the National Association of Rooflight Manufacturers early in the specification process can pay dividends in maximising the energy saving benefits of natural daylight and achieving the latest environmental standards – including Part L of the Building Regulations. Regulatory Compliance A well-designed building with a good spread of natural light – typically 15-20% of the roof area in rooflights – will ensure sufficient daylight enters and reduce the need for artificial lighting. The Part L legislation, geared to save energy and

reduce CO2 emissions, stipulates that major savings need to come from building services such as lighting and heating. Part L specifies a target emissions rate (TER) which all new non-domestic new builds must perform at least as well as. Being a £6m premium care facility, it was important to ensure that all materials used were of the very best quality. Specifically, the material chosen needed to be guaranteed to outlast the life of the building and not fade substantially over time. SSQ’s Del Carmen slates are guaranteed as such and were therefore selected for use across the entirety of the new building. SSQ’s Del Carmen slate is tested to NF228 standards – the world’s leading slate standard introduced in France which tests for water absorption levels, flexural and transversal strengths, density and the carbonate and non carbonate content. The exterior cladding on the new Banbury Station car park in Oxfordshire has been designed to help the building blend into its environment and was installed by car park specialists Berry Systems. McNaughton Architects reduced the impact on the local environment by specifying Glass Sto Panels for the exterior cladding. This means that the residential properties opposite the car park are reflected on the walls of the steel framed, four storey structure. Berry Systems formed part of the design team for this, together with McNaughton and the main contractors, Osborne. Hill Cannon designed the superstructure which was erected by James Killelea. The panels consist of toughened glass bonded to a carrier board attached to an stainless steel and aluminium rail carrier. They are manufactured off- site which aids quality control and reduces on-site installation time. As well as the Sto Panels, Berry systems also supplied and installed the capping panels, soffits, internal perforated metal infill panels, the link bridge security and access gate, rail side security mesh and, of course, the vehicle safety barriers for which Berry Systems are renowned, on all the ramps. These barriers consisted of RB1 spring steel buffers supporting a Berry Beam barrier, anti-climb mesh and integral pedestrian handrail. CV370 Challenging traditional methods CV371 H+H is again at the forefront of increasing levels of efficiency in UK house building after findings from the AIMC4 project revealed Retro Fit Joist Hangers to be a faster and more airtight way of hanging supporting floor joists. Retro Fit Hangers are now being recommended as an alternative to traditional methods when using the H+H Thin Joint System. The AIMC4 project provided an opportunity to measure the airtightness of buildings at several stages of the build process. By using Retro Fit Joist Hangers, there is an increased level of airtightness because it eliminates the need to cut into the brickwork and maintains the integrity of the aircrete wall in full. This new method means that the entire wall can be built first with the hangers added after, thus saving time.
