2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 15 – JULY 29

Seven wins in row for CBH ON a day when leaders Chester Boughton Hall recorded their seventh successive ECB Premier League victory, reigning champions Alderley Edge were bowled out for 92 by Nantwich who could well go on to become the closest challengers for the title in the final third of the season. CBH extended their lead to 32 points with a typically bold run chase at home to Bramhall who have been posting some decent scores lately. They reached 243, Danny Lamb 52, Adam Wilde 45, Jack Williams 3-34. Chester knocked off the runs in 46 overs with a score of 247-2, led by Warren Goodwin whose unbeaten 111 (113 balls: 14 fours) was the day’s only century. He and in-form Lee Dixon, 73 not out, added an unbroken 125 for the third . Shock of the day was at Alderley Edge, routed for 92 by Nantwich, Alan Day and Tom Foreman jointly top-scoring with modest innings of 21. They had no answer to the pace and movement of Jimmy Warrington, 5-35 and Ollie Freckingham, 2-28, plus spinner Shaneil Patel 2-8. The Dabbers replied with 97-4, Luke Robinson 48 not out, Ryan Brown 38 after struggling at 26-3.

Bowdon win, but stay bottom Bowdon registered only their third win of the season – but stay in bottom place – with an improved performance against Timperley at The King’s School, Chester. After struggling at 149-8, Bowdon totalled 195-8, James McDougall 39, Dewi Jones 33, Chris Ashling adding a key 31 not out at 10. Jack White took 4-64. Timperley lost their last wicket at 190 with one over remaining,Ty Lawrence top-scoring with 53 not out. Occasional bowler Carl Hey chipped in with a match-winning 2-7. Neston maintained a place in the top half with a tight, one-wicket win at Hyde, who posted 164, Lewis Reeves scoring 60 at number 8 after his side had been reduced to 83-7 by Pat Woodland 3- 32. Neston recovered from 123-8 to win at 167-9 thanks to Luke Camden’s unbeaten 79. Ian Fishman took 4-21 and Dan Cranmer 3-49 for Hyde who will have to improve to beat the drop. There were two brilliant slow bowling performances in Didsbury’s narrow win at Cheadle. The home side were bowled out for 99 by Simon Normanton with the superb figures of 6-27. Didsbury slipped to 75-8 in reply, Sam Leech 35, before tail enders Matt Gregson and Jack Hastings pulled them through to close on 102- 8, Rashid Amin claiming 6-29. Toft’s bid for a top four finish was not helped by a below par performance at home to Grappenhall. Fighting spiritedly against a rapid return to Division One, their visitors posted 206-8, Peter Barnes 52, Gaz Burns 49, Owen Lynch 41, Rob Jones 3-59. Toft fell behind the clock in reply after Jones had been brilliantly caught on the boundary for 41 by Owen Lynch. Father and son Toby (45) and James (61) Drummond added 79 for the seventh wicket, but the innings only reached 193-8 by stumps, both sides seeming reluctant to take the initiative. Skipper Adam Roylance claimed 3-52 for Grappers, who look to have the spirit to avoid the drop. O Look out for Lancashire’s Rob Jones figuring in a pool of 12th men for England in the Old Trafford Test Match against South Africa starting on Friday. O Grappenhall expect all-rounder Albert Pennington, 18, who won the June Performance of the Month award for his 6-68 and 56 against Nantwich, to miss the rest of the season with a serious hand injury. Sale held on at 141-9 by the close, Brooke Guest 37, tail-enders Will Ratcliffe and Keith Welling defying the guile of Andy Greasley, 3-40.

Cheadle Hulme hit rock bottom ONCE the pride of the League with multiple championships and Cheshire Cup titles to their name, Cheadle Hulme hit rock bottom when their ninth defeat of the season at Bredbury St. Mark’s landed them in bottom spot in Division Two, with relegation now a spectre. Fast-improving Bredbury’s third win in a row was secured by eight wickets after their Grove Park visitors had been dismissed for 180, Tom Whitehouse 50. St. Mark’s came through with 181-2, Major Khan 78 not out, Darren Carr 54, to move off bottom spot. Tattenhall, meanwhile, suddenly hit their straps with a 17 run win at Christleton which lifts them to 10th place. Stuart Sadler, 63 and Joe Prince, 57 helped Tatters total 204, Shavaiz Saif 4-62. To which Christleton replied with 187 all out, Joshua Joseph 59, Mel Dobson claiming 4-57 and Rob Okell 3-26. At the top of the table, Barrow’s loss of form continued when Brooklands inflicted their third successive defeat. Brooklands mustered 185-7, Kevin Carroll 59, Chris Hart 42, Iro De Silva 4-40, to which Barrow replied with 123 all out, Carroll 3-13, Raj Singh 3-28. New boys Romiley are up to second after a low-scoring four wicket win at Lindow, who were bowled out for 55, nine batsmen being dismissed for single figures against Mohan D’Souza, who took 6-23 and James Badrock, 3-14. Romiley also struggled, but 56-6 was enough, D’Souza contributing an unbeaten 23, coming in after three ducks. Tim Young took 5-27. Alvanley’s recent rise was halted at Stockport, who won by six wickets and are up to fourth. Alvanley were all out for 89, the Cale Green men replying with 90-4. Northwich continued their upward trend with a thrilling two wickets, last ball win against Mobberley at Moss Farm. Mobberley totalled 149, Nick Butters 39, Muhammed Ajmal 4-28, and Northwich then edged home at 149-8 off the last ball, Mohammed Ajmal 54, Glinoj Cherian 43, Mark Walker 36, while James Gittings hit the last-gasp runs. Umpire’s quiz: by Alistair Davies QUESTION 14: A wide ball is called. The ball is deflected by the wicket-keeper onto a fielder’s helmet placed on the ground within the field of play. Meantime, the batsmen have attempted a run, but had not crossed when the ball hit the helmet. They subsequently complete the run. What should be the outcome? ANSWER: One run is scored for the wide ball, plus five penalty runs when the ball makes contact with the helmet. The ball is already dead when the batsmen cross, so that run does not count. Therefore, six runs are scored in total. Laws 25.5; 41.3 QUESTION 15: There is only one umpire available for the match. That umpire miscounts the number of valid deliveries in the over. From the seventh delivery, he calls no ball, then realises that he has miscounted. What action should he take?

Memories of Bramhall at Lord’s in 2001 MTB writes: Watching England win the Women’s World Cup on television at Lord’s after that magnificent six-wicket performance by Anya Shrubsole, I was interested to see the follow-up picture next day of Anya, then aged 9, watching her dad Ian play for Bath in the National Club knock out final at the Home of Cricket in 2001. I saw that match 16 years ago, when Bramhall wrote their name in Club and League history with a thrilling four runs win over Bath, when the scores were: Bramhall 175-6; Bath 171. Looking up the scorecard from that game in my records, the last line in the Bath innings reads: 11. Ian Shrubsole b Charlie Lamb …..8. Tight figures of 3-23 from his nine overs earned Charlie the Man of the Match award. He went on to enjoy a fine Minor Counties career with Cheshire, later emigrating to live at Geelong, near Melbourne in Australia. If he gets to read this – and I know he reads the Newsletter – well done again, Charlie – did that stir some happy memories?
