BOTELLOLUMBER.COM | 508-477-3132 | MASHPEE, MA About This Year’s Theme: You’re Here. You’re Home.

Every year, this Magazine presents Mashpee through the lens of a theme—something that ties the content together and inspires a cover story. This year, we asked our contributors to embrace one word: HOME. Pretty obvious choice, right? We have all spent a lot more time at home recently. But the theme goes far beyond that, as you will see in the stories that follow. Mashpee is home to many people. Home to the Wampanoag Tribe. Home to unique forests, wildlife— even the conservation that protects those forests and that wildlife in Mashpee is special. Home to businesses of all varieties that are owned, operated, and championed by a diverse population of people. Home-away-from-home for so many. Home to explore. Home to an epic assortment of dining establishments. Home to golf, kayaking, shopping, and relaxation. Home to climate- conscious businesses and consumers. Home to non-profit organizations that serve more than just their home of Mashpee. Home isn’t just about where you lay your head at night. Home is a feeling. And we’re really feeling it here in Mashpee. Inside this edition of the Mashpee Magazine, you’ll find four sections. LIVING: Resources for making Mashpee your home—year-round or seasonally. WORKING: Everything you need to know about doing business in Mashpee. VISITING and OUT & ABOUT: Find places to stay and what to do while you’re in Mashpee. Whatever the reason for your time spent in Mashpee, remember while you’re here, you’re home. MashpeeChamber.com 5 FROM THE DIRECTOR 100% Grateful: Mashpee Is Home

As you will discover in the stories that fill this edition of the Mashpee Magazine, the word home has many different meanings. For me, home is synonymous with comfort. Comfort in a place, comfort in a particular role, or even the comfort you get around certain people. For so many, Mashpee is a place of comfort. From weekend visitors and weekday workers to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe whose history is as long and as rich as the land itself, this Cape

PHOTO: JACK LYNCH PHOTOGRAPHY LYNCH JACK PHOTO: Cod town is comfortable. It is home. The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce Office has had quite a few “homes” here in Mashpee over the years. Today, the Chamber of Commerce’s office is right at home at CapeSpace at Mashpee Commons. We moved into CapeSpace in early May of this year with no adjustment phase. I, for one, felt instantly at home in the shared work environment provided by CapeSpace. We are so happy to be here and so grateful to Mashpee Commons and CapeSpace for allowing us to operate in such close proximity to so many of our local business who also call Mashpee Commons their home. Speaking of gratitude, at the end of December 2020, Mary Lou Palumbo, the Mashpee Chamber’s Executive Director of eleven years, retired to spend valuable time with her friends, family, and loved ones. As an organization, we are so grateful for the incredible work Mary Lou accomplished during her time working for the Chamber. As the new Executive Director of the Mashpee Chamber, I feel right at home in my new role, thanks to the incredible leadership and mentorship Mary Lou provided me since I began working for the Chamber in late 2013. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Mashpee Chamber Board of Directors. The board is comprised of individuals who volunteer their time, creativity, knowledge, and skills to ensure the prosperity of the Mashpee Chamber and the Mashpee business community. This year, our board of directors welcomes five new members: Demetrius Becrelis, Corinne Costanzo Wickel, Brian Lewis, Robbin Orbison, and David Pina. We would also like to recognize the contributions made over many years by our out-going board members Sandi Abrams, Rachael Hicks, Kevin Kirrane, and Dino Mitrokostas. Serena LoPiccolo-Smith will move from the Board of Directors into the new role of Ambassador Chairperson, with Nichole Rich Byres as Ambassador Vice-Chairperson. Katy Acheson Executive Director

BY RODNEY C. COLLINS, TOWN MANAGER

Several years ago, a fellow employee shared with me the story of how she came to live in the Town of Mashpee. As a child and young adult, her family had summered every year on the Cape. After living out of state for nearly a decade, she was offered the chance to relocate, and took the opportunity to rediscover “the Cape Cod of her youth.” She recalled the day she and her husband headed to Mashpee to look at a piece of land, and summed up that experience by saying “just one trip over the bridge and I knew we were home.” She referred to Mashpee as their home even before they had a residence here, and I suspect her comment had less to do with the house they would eventually build, and more to do with her reaction to being in a place that held so many fond memories. She had a strong instinct and desire to make similar memories with her own children and, looking back, she had no regrets about choosing Mashpee as their forever home. A house is a structure in which we typically reside with family and/or friends. It is the place we prepare for the start of our day, and rest and recharge at the end of our day. A home, on the other hand, is a place where we gather to share meals and conversation, and where we celebrate holidays and special occasions with our loved ones. It is more than a dwelling—it ignites feelings of happiness, contentment, safety, and security that can only be experienced when a person knows they are where they belong. Residents of Mashpee know better than most what it means to belong, and it is that very sense of belonging which makes this community more than a town or destination, it makes it a home. Never before has our Mashpee home felt as vulnerable as in the wake of the many challenges, uncertainties, and inconveniences brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic. While we at Town Hall strive to create opportunities to safely engage the community, and to provide resources and services that ensure residents stay connected, this unprecedented health crisis has tested our resolve and forced us to think outside the box. Like many local businesses, Town offices have had to make accommodations in order to comply with the safety standards put in place by the Governor, but we know these adjustments are necessary to protect employees and the public from any risk of exposure to the virus, and we remain ready to serve you—our citizens and guests.

8 Mashpee Magazine | Annual 2021 Mashpee Is 100% HOME One of the most incredible things about Mashpee is that, even in the midst of a global pandemic, our hometown shines with opportunity. Boating, fishing, kayaking, clamming, hiking, and biking are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed year-round, even while wearing a mask. Residents and visitors to Mashpee continue to enjoy world-class shopping and dining; several new businesses have been proposed and some are already in the permitting phase; residential and commercial construction is booming; and seasonal rentals are in high demand. Short-term rental property owners operated for nearly the entire 2020 summer season, and we anticipate another busy summer rental season this year, with few restrictions on the many recreational and leisure activities that make our Town such a popular vacation spot. We look forward to welcoming all of our seasonal residents, as well as new and returning guests, even before summer is in full swing, because there is always something new to do and see here in Mashpee.

I want to take this opportunity to thank every Mashpee resident and business owner who has remained attentive to the simple but essential precautionary measures that have helped maintain the health of everyone in our community.

That diligence, which restaurants, retail stores, and other business establishments demonstrate to keep their customers safe, which educators and coaches demonstrate to keep their students safe, and which citizens demonstrate to keep their friends and neighbors safe, has helped foster a deep sense of community within our Mashpee family. It’s a daily reminder that here, in our hometown, people are always looking out for each other. I was not at all surprised to learn that several Mashpee restaurants offered free meals to families who were experiencing a hardship due to the pandemic. The local food pantry has received generous donations from a number of residents and local businesses, and volunteers have been working tirelessly to keep the cupboards stocked in Mashpee homes. Neighbors have been especially thoughtful of our senior population, ensuring they have adequate food and other essentials, transporting them to appointments and, in some cases, just being a caring voice on the other end of the phone line. While many families across the nation have sheltered at home for weeks and even months at a time, anxiously awaiting the day when we can safely travel, gather, embrace, and enjoy the social intimacy we once took for granted, our Mashpee “home” has been a constant source of comfort and support, and our extended “family” has survived and thrived together. Even in the face of adversity, we live our best life every day, because we are where we belong. We are home.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT 100% Devoted: A Second Home for Students

BY PATRICIA DEBOER, SUPERINTENDENT

For many, HOME means love, support, a safety net of acceptance and guidance, a refuge away from the challenges of our world, a place of belonging and connection—much more than just a structure. We strive for the Mashpee Public Schools to be a home away from home for our students and staff. Through our collective words and actions, within our schools and within our connected Mashpee community, we apply #212TheExtraDegree of effort to create a place where each student feels safe, protected, valued, and empowered—a second home. Mashpee is a family-focused, connected community—an outstanding HOME in which to live and to learn! Mashpee has been home for the Mashpee Wampanoag people for thousands of years. As a way to honor and celebrate our Native American students and to educate all students, the Mashpee Public Schools collaborated with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to create a land acknowledgement poster for display in every classroom and throughout the common areas of our school buildings. Via a QR code on the poster, the viewer can also listen to Class of 2020 graduate Alyssa Harris reading the poster’s message in both Wôpanâak and English. This is just one example of the work we are doing to create an inclusive school community—a shared home. The Mashpee Public Schools play an important role in our Mashpee hometown, a supportive community that has always been focused on providing the best environment in which to raise a family and on ensuring the best education possible for its children. Mashpee’s children are growing up in a nurturing environment that values them as individuals and that promotes their safety and well-being. There is a network of individuals and organizations ready and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that every opportunity is available to each Mashpee child, now and into the future. The Mashpee Public Schools is ever-changing and growing in our quest for excellence—being better today than yesterday. We are a small, student-centered school system that thinks BIG. Our innovative partnerships, programs, and learning experiences, together with a culture that values relationships, set us apart from other districts. We live by a “whatever-it-takes” mindset. A learner’s journey through the Mashpee

Public Schools is filled with outstanding learning opportunities designed to produce graduates who possess our Portrait of a Graduate competencies—graduates who are purposeful communicators and collaborators, engaged citizens, empowered knowledge seekers, critical thinkers and problem-solvers, and resilient human beings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the partnership between school and home grew tremendously and became more important than ever. We are so grateful to our parents/guardians for all the work they have done to support our scholars. From March 16, 2020 to June 18, 2020, all of our school buildings remained closed, and teaching and learning became a virtual experience. PHOTOS: MASHPEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS PUBLIC MASHPEE PHOTOS:

As we opened our 2020-2021 school year, students in PreK–Grade 3 returned to school as full time in-person learners while students in Grades 4–12 returned as hybrid learners—alternating weekly between in-person learning and remote learning as members of either the Mashpee or Falcon cohort. A family could also choose a 100% remote learning option for their children. We have learned so much about our practices and about ourselves during the pandemic. We were forced to problem-solve and come up with new ways to “do school.” We have all grown and are better for having gone through this shared experience. Although we have spent many hours separated from each other, we have been able to remain connected and unified in our goals.

PreK–GRADE 2: Our Coombs School currently serves 342 student-leaders. In addition to providing a part-time free preschool program for three-year- olds, the Coombs School also provides a free, full-day PreK program for all Mashpee four-year-olds. A learner at the Coombs experiences an early childhood education that includes small class sizes and small group instruction, highly skilled and dedicated educators, a multi-tiered proactive approach for meeting his/her academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, technology-enhanced instruction and learning, mindful education, cultural programs, community service projects, therapy dog Cassie, a free after-school activities program (non-COVID), and strong partnerships with members of our community that enrich and enhance learning opportunities as well as provide outstanding family engagement events (non-COVID). On top of all of this, the Coombs School provides a safe, positive, and joy-filled environment where every student is valued and celebrated. If you ever need to feel better about our world, a visit to a Coombs School classroom is your remedy. Our youngest learners are curious, creative, caring, smart, funny, adorable, and bursting at the seams with potential! You are guaranteed to smile after just spending a minute among these precious people. There is nothing better than seeing our world through their eyes. Every small voice is heard and valued at the Coombs School.

GRADE 3: Learners transition from the Coombs School to the Quashnet School. The Quashnet School currently serves 450 student-leaders in Grades 3–6. A Quashnet student is not only provided with differentiated instruction tailored to meet his/her individual learning needs but also with a school environment where the whole child is nurtured and celebrated. The Quashnet School is rich with opportunities for family engagement and participation; however, the safety practices and protocols in place during the pandemic have caused many activities and events to be put on hold. Just like at the Coombs School, the Mashpee children who attend the Quashnet School brighten our world. They are thoughtful, filled with wonder and potential, creative, hard-working, smart, funny, and inspiring. These young people can help you to be a better person and to gain perspective on the world around us. We are building caring leader-citizens in our community, young people who greatly enhance our “home.” GRADE 7: The third transition for a Mashpee learner. After spending four years at the Quashnet School, our now twelve-year-old learners begin the final segment of their MPS journey at the Mashpee Middle-High School (MMHS), a comprehensive high school that currently educates 700 students in Grades 7–12. A MMHS student learns in a safe, supportive and inclusive culture where diversity is embraced. Throughout his/her journey through MMHS, a student learns from highly skilled and dedicated educators, is able to access 15 Advanced Placement courses, Technology Center of Excellence courses—robotics, animation, maker-space, computer-gaming, TV production, our ProStart culinary program, and multiple language offerings including Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and Wôpanâak. Students can become highly skilled musicians, artists, and performers, participate in our Career & Technical Pathways program which currently offers eight specific pathways, engage in dual enrollment and school-to-career programs, present at professional conferences, as well as participate in a wide range of co-curricular clubs, extensive athletic offerings with no fees, robotics competitions, and community service projects. Technology-enhanced learning abounds at MMHS. We work hard to make sure that each MMHS student feels valued and that student voice is prominent. The changes that we witness in our scholars from 7th through 12th grade are simply amazing. Not only do they display significant physical growth, they also evolve into young adults who are interested in making a difference, are excellent teammates, are positive role models and leaders for those who follow them, and are informed caregivers for our Mashpee home and for our planet. Even though the pandemic has created quite a nontraditional learning year for our students, they have adapted, persevered, supported each other, and demonstrated amazing resiliency.

The final event in a student’s journey through the Mashpee Public Schools is the awarding of an MMHS diploma. Graduation is a truly special ceremony where our connected community comes together to recognize and celebrate our amazing young people and their accomplishments. For students who have been with us since preschool, this day marks the last milestone in a fifteen-year journey. The integration of the Mashpee Wampanoag culture into this ceremony makes it even more meaningful for our connected community—a way to celebrate, honor, and recognize that Mashpee is the Tribe’s home. We are confident that the Mashpee Public Schools will continue to evolve and positively contribute to the growth of our home, the Town of Mashpee. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that Mashpee’s children and the generations to follow have an inclusive home community that continues to be rich in culture, shared values, natural resources, and quality life opportunities. #WeAreMashpee is the hashtag of the Mashpee Public Schools, and the “we”

BY DAVID WEEDEN

The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum anticipates an exciting new 2021 season. The Tribal Museum with the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through their Native American Hawaiian Museum Services Program has created the “400 Years Ago” and “660 Young Adults” exhibits, which we are happy to present. The larger “400 YEARS AGO” exhibit depicts the years around initial colonial contact, providing insight into the Natural and Cultural landscapes of the time period, as perceived through a Wampanoag perspective: the Wampanoag Governance and Social structures leading up to Metacom’s War (King Phillip) of 1675-76. These first years of colonialism were difficult and challenging for Wampanoag as a people and a region, considering the plagues which devastated the Wampanoag Nation shortly before the arrival of the Plymouth colonists in 1620. Additionally there will be a “660 YOUNG ADULTS” exhibit which represents Mashpee Wampanoag within the 18-30 age demographic. Developed in collaboration with and direction provided by this targeted age group to create an informative exhibit on what it means to be Mashpee Wampanoag. The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum thanks all the patrons from previous years and welcomes everyone to the new exhibits this season.

The Museum is Open from April 5 through December 3, 2021

BY RICHARD DESORGHER

Where is Cape Cod’s Smallest Historic One-Room Schoolhouse? It is in Mashpee! Mashpee’s historical gem sits in the heart of the Mashpee Community Park across from Town Hall at the intersection of Route 130 and Great Neck Road North and is open to the public, free of charge, every Monday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm from Memorial Day until Indigenous People Day in October. It is the 1831 One-Room Schoolhouse. Come take a tour, learn about Mashpee history, see some of the early educational artifacts, take part in an 1850 classroom and write with your quill and ink pen and on your slate board. Originally located in South Mashpee, the historic dwelling served as a schoolhouse until 1901, as a chapel (Ockway Chapel), library and the location of important pieces of Wampanoag history with the preaching of Blind Joe Amos and William Apess. It was also the site where the Mashpee Wampanoags signed what amounted to a Declaration of Independence. They wrote “all men are born free and equal” and declared that they would act against further encroachment by white settlers; 102 Wampanoag women and men, signed that Declaration of Independence in the schoolhouse, which later led to some basic rights for the Wampanoags to govern themselves. The schoolmaster, or schoolmarm, will welcome you each Monday throughout the summer to tour through this important piece of Mashpee history. So, come visit and go back to school in early Mashpee. However, don’t be late! For every five minutes you are late, you have to stay after school one hour. BY PAULA PETERS

Strolling down North Street in the Mashpee Commons you may catch a whiff of sage in the air and hear the sound of a powwow drum. Should you follow it, be prepared for a culturally captivating experience at the Wampanoag Trading Post and Gallery. The shop opened last July and became instantly popular for the Native American art, jewelry and products sold there representing not only local Wampanoag artisans, but also artisans from tribes all across America. In fact, everything sold in the shop is made by indigenous people representing the rich and colorful diversity of many tribes. In the front window, Alaskan Yu’pik made mobiles dance in the sunlight next to dream catchers that are the work of a Mashpee Wampanoag artist who crafts them of wisteria vines harvested from her own back yard. Original artwork covers the walls displaying the unique styles of several artists and the shelves display a wide range of works including Wampanoag pottery, Penobscott baskets and Seminole patchwork. Jewelry cases hold Cherokee copper, Navajo silver and wampum jewelry, which has been a popular attraction at the shop. “It’s not just artistically beautiful, it tells our story. The wampum is something that has sustained us and adorned us for thousands of years,” said Danielle Greendeer, who co-owns the shop with Paula Peters. Both women are citizens of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. The shop also carries books, music and Native food products like the maple syrup made by the Mashantucket Pequot, Red Lake Nation pancake batter and organic coffee produced by the Shinnecock.

“I feel like it is something that has been missing in this marketplace,” Paula said. “I have traveled to other tribal communities and reservations across the country and always find a gift shop where the art and crafts of the region are sold. It is part of the experience. When people come to Mashpee they know there is a Wampanoag presence here and they are looking for us. Here we are.”

The two women believe that art is vital to the preservation of their culture, so the Wampanoag Trading Post and Gallery is not just a place to cater to visitors, but more importantly provides a market for the many talented Native artisans who keep the culture alive.

BY MAUREEN GARDNER

What’s one thing that makes you think of home? A smell, photograph, person or a memory? As some of the first residents at Laurentide at Mashpee Commons, a senior living community, Joan Bedard, Charlotte Towey, Pauline Tellier and Irene Hurley know a little something about finding and creating the feeling of home and are sharing their stories with us! Charlotte was able to create the feeling of home with a painting that hangs over her bed. She first found the painting while on vacation with her husband and shared, “I loved the painting, and my husband made a fuss about not wanting to carry it around for the rest of the trip and getting it home safely. Years later we saw a re-creation of the painting in a lumber store and bought it, now when I look at that picture, I think about my husband.” For some people, the overwhelming sense of home sneaks up on you. Joan shared, “It took me a couple of months of spending time with my daughter. One day, after dropping me off back at Laurentide, I came through the door and I thought, ‘I’m home, it’s home now.’” Others felt at home immediately, the anticipation of moving in made for a quick transition. Irene had been admiring the architecture and design of Laurentide long before opening and was excited to be among the first residents. 24 Mashpee Magazine | Annual 2021 Mashpee Is 100% HOME When asked about what made her apartment feel like home, Irene shared, “I felt like it was a new beginning or a new life, I knew I was going to be very happy here. The building was all new and the staff was welcoming. I just had to get here.” PHOTO: LAURENTIDE AT MASHPEE COMMONS MASHPEE AT LAURENTIDE PHOTO:

Pauline, the very first person to call Laurentide home, shared that she brought a lot of pictures and items handmade by her late husband. When asked about when she felt that Laurentide had become home Pauline said, “It is my home, every time I go out with my son and daughter-in-law I come back and say ‘I’m home,’ or they’ll say why don’t you come Independent & Assisted Living over for a while and I’ll say ‘I want and Avita Memory Care to go home, this is home.’” The cozy, memory-filled apartments are a large part of what makes Laurentide a great home but what would home be without the people? All four ladies agreed that the associates at Laurentide are a huge part about what makes life so To learn about our enjoyable. Everyone from Executive Director, Maureen, to food service wonderful way of life call: and housekeeping associates go above and beyond to make sure 508.539.1300 Laurentide is such a great place to laurentidemashpeecommons.com call home.

BY JEFF SAWYER

We all define home in uniquely different ways. Meet four female business owners who have a shared definition: home is a place where they feel they belong; a place where they can live, laugh and learn; and more importantly, a place where they can make a difference.

SHERI CATANIA Co-owner of Wicked and Crave by Wicked “Hospitality runs in the family,” says Sheri Catania, co-owner, along with her husband Rob, of Wicked Restaurant and Crave. “At its core, Wicked is a family business. We’re passionate about food. Currently, three of our grown children work at the restaurant alongside our talented crew who we consider an extended family,” she says. Catania grew up in Centerville where her family owned and operated a restaurant. “The Cape,” she says, “Will always be home, and Mashpee in particular holds many fond memories. The up-and-coming town seemed a natural choice for a business like Wicked to further enrich the area.” Learning that gluten in her diet was making her sick motivated Catania to create a safe and diverse menu for those like her. “I’m a lover of the arts and the baking I do at Crave and Wicked is a natural progression of that love; now I’m making delicious sweets that

PHOTO: COURTESY OF SHERI CANTANIA SHERI OF COURTESY PHOTO: everyone can enjoy.” A demanding and often hectic business, particularly with the challenges 2020 brought, Catania says, “Our crew spends so much time together: holidays, weekends, and late nights. Only a family can thrive under these conditions. Our customers have also become family. We wouldn’t have survived had it not been for their unwavering support. In a way, the restaurant is an extension of our home.”

42 Mashpee Magazine | Annual 2021 Mashpee Is 100% HOME MICHELLE ITZKOWITZ Owner of innerglow yoga Accepting a new teaching position as a health education teacher brought Itzkowitz to the Cape in 2012. The following summer, she saw a need in the community and opened a pop-up yoga studio in Mashpee Commons. She says, “When I was house-hunting, I chose Mashpee because I liked the idea of being in a vibrant community like the Commons. The same thing happened when I walked into what was to be my future yoga studio. It felt like home.” She now has two studios: Mashpee and downtown Plymouth. Itzkowitz is professionally trained in many classic disciplines of yoga and is also a ITZKOWITZ MICHELLE OF COURTESY PHOTO: professionally trained chef. She explains, “We offer anything from gentle and restorative yoga to more powerful and vigorous classes.” In her teacher trainings, she offers these disciplines as an exploration of yoga and Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga. Confronted with the challenges of 2020 and having to close last March, Itzkowitz took a deep breath and two weeks later went online to offer virtual classes. “We went online in March and offered yoga outdoors from July through October. We still offer a combination of virtual and live outdoor classes. Hopefully, we’ll be open indoors in May.” “innerglow yoga is an extension of the home I was brought up in,” says Itzkowitz, adding, “My parents created a place for family and friends where our house was the go-to place for holidays, after school or any type of celebration. Ours was an open door with everyone welcome.” Home to Itzkowitz is community, and offers love and support. She says, “That’s what yoga is all about—igniting safety, security, love and compassion.” innerglow yoga (508) 477-9642 • [email protected] innerglowyogacapecod.com • capecodyogaschool.com

CAROL MCLEOD Owner of Carol McLeod Design Asked at the age of 6, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” She answered, “An artist.” Meet Carol McLeod, owner of branding agency Carol McLeod Design. She says, “Art and design always seemed to be in my blood. Looking back, I clearly see the things that drove me toward starting my own branding agency.” Daughter of a third-generation builder with a degree in architectural construction, McLeod was surrounded by the art of improving and repurposing things. Artistic from the age of 4, a champion athlete in high school, and curious and daring as a young woman (sailed to Bermuda in a hurricane), McLeod says, “I always wanted to have a business of my own,

PHOTO: DAN CUTRONA DAN PHOTO: to be a leader and not a follower.” Summering in Falmouth for years, she saw the Cape as a place where she wanted to live and work. “I chose Mashpee for my business as it was positioned between two larger towns—Falmouth and Hyannis, with easy access to both bridges. I wanted my business to be located in a town that was growing and that was Mashpee,” she explains. With a love for helping businesses define who they are and designing how their brand is experienced, she says, “I strongly believe you can’t make a wine with a fancy label taste good, but you can make a great tasting wine stand out on the shelf.” “In business for 30 years, my office is my second home, adorned with some of my collections and memories of clients and their projects. It’s a relaxed environment that allows us to focus on our clients.” She adds, “I have a 10-minute commute past the ocean everyday and can’t imagine working elsewhere.”

44 Mashpee Magazine | Annual 2021 Mashpee Is 100% HOME HIRA RAFIQ Owner/Designer of Verde Floral Design, Inc. Asked what motivated her to own her own business, Rafiq explained, “I grew up surrounded by family who owned small businesses. I wanted to continue on that path. I also wanted to become the first woman in my family to own her own business, and to be an example for younger female generations.” Well aware of what it takes to run a small business, Rafiq pursued and received her MBA to help prepare. She also had three years’ hands-on experience by serving as manager of Verde. “Studies have shown that receiving flowers elevates your mood for up to three days,” says Rafiq, adding, “It’s hard not to be happy when surrounded by flowers. I feel at home at Verde because I get to express my creative and artistic nature for others’ enjoyment. When you see your hard work all around you, it’s hard not to feel a piece of your soul lives within the business.” RAFIQ HIRA OF COURTESY PHOTO: Having grown up in Sandwich and Mashpee, Rafiq says, “Even when I moved away, I always felt a calling to come back home.” She found the Commons to be a unique shopping, dining, and entertainment experience unlike any other on the Cape. She says, “I see a growing movement in Mashpee of women of color becoming more of a presence in the community and taking on leadership roles. I’m privileged and proud to be part of that movement.” For these women, owning their own business is in their DNA, they have a shared affinity for Cape Cod and see Mashpee as a source of growth and opportunity for them and their families. Simply put, they’re at home.

DEER CROSSING MARKETPLACE 100% ADVENTUROUS Out & About in Mashpee: Home for Exploring Outdoors

BY KATY ACHESON

By land or by sea, Mashpee is home to unique outdoor adventures along with the gear and goodies you’ll want to take along! Before you start adventuring, you’ll want to gear-up. The perfect place for getting everything you need for outdoor adventures also happens to be right here in Mashpee. “We can outfit the family, top to bottom,” says L.L. Bean store manager, Marybeth. Imagine this… clothing with built in sun protection or insect repellent to protect you and your fellow adventurers from the elements! Yes, they have that

and much more. BEAN L.L. PHOTO: Now that you’re dressed for adventure, don’t forget to stop and grab a snack or lunch. Adventuring is calorie-burning! Mashpee has quite the delicious selection of convenient counter-services locations. Look on page 64 for a full list of local “Eats & Drinks.” You look great, you’ve got lunch, now it’s time to hit the trails. And Mashpee has more of those than you’d expect In fact, Mashpee is home to Cape Cod’s second largest open and publicly accessible conservation land, covering over 6,000 acres shared between Mashpee and the neighboring town of Falmouth where

Nowhere else in America shares this model of conservation yet. That’s just what’s on land though. You haven’t stepped foot in the water! You know there are beaches here. It’s Cape Cod after all. Like other Cape towns, Mashpee has both freshwater and saltwater beaches. But maybe you’re looking for something that’s special to Mashpee? When asked about which of their tours offer the most unique-to-Mashpee experience, the owner of RideAway Adventures, Mike Morrison, said, “The most unique would be the paddle board full moon and sunset tours!” RideAway Adventures’ two evening-time tour options provide a whole different experience for paddlers with or without experience thanks to having the perfect spot to start from. “You can go inland into freshwater or out to a beautiful white-sand beach all from one spot. The space is contained thanks to the barrier beach—‘The Spit’—and allows paddlers the benefit of a calmer body of water with no aggressive current,” says Mike. Whether you’re on vacation or on a lunch break, Mashpee is home to natural beauty worth exploring!

MashpeeChamber.com 61 100% SATISFYING Out & About in Mashpee: Home of Takeout Titans

BY KATY ACHESON

From casual counter-service to elegant fine dining, Mashpee is home to a wide variety of dining experiences. While many of our local favorites were already rocking curb-side pickup, the increased demand for take- out last year led to some creative new options like online ordering and take-home family style meals.

BAGEL HAVEN even pulled out the roller skates! Literal…actual roller skates. We asked Jamie, owner of Bagel Haven, to share a little bit about the social media video of her skating around the parking lot delivering orders to customers in their cars back in April of 2020. She said, “My only comment would be that I had ZERO idea that the video would go viral. I guess the timing was just perfect...people really needed something light-

PHOTO: BAGEL HAVEN BAGEL PHOTO: hearted and fun to smile about.”

Co-owner Sheri of WICKED RESTAURANT & WINE BAR in South Cape Village shared how their existing system was upgraded with online ordering when demand for pick-up grew. “In the first few weeks after the shutdown last year, we were having trouble keeping up with phone orders. We updated our point-of-sale system, adding an online ordering platform so that our customers no longer needed to rely on “getting through” by phone. Now they can place their orders at their convenience and select a

pickup time as well.” BAR WINE & RESTAURANT WICKED PHOTO:

62 Mashpee Magazine | Annual 2021 Mashpee Is 100% HOME Want to support these and other local restaurants? Our “Eats & Drinks” section (pages 64-68) lists the restaurants, breweries, and bakeries in and around Mashpee.

CHOCOLATE ROSE BAKERY also picked-up their pick-up game by introducing online ordering. Co-owner Vanessa explains, “We were looking forward to creating an online platform at the right time—which always seemed to be pushed back. Last year put the flame under us and we had our online shop working within 24 hours from the time businesses transitioned to a curbside only model. In an e-commerce, socially distanced world, online ordering has made it possible to better serve our clients with added ease

PHOTO: CHOCOLATE ROSE BAKERY ROSE CHOCOLATE PHOTO: and convenience.”

Online ordering platforms were not the only innovations born out of 2020. Megan, manager of SIENA, explained how their family style take-out meals were created by the Chef and his team. “We tried different things to appeal to larger groups since families were home more than they had been in the past and eating lots of meals together. The Executive Chef and Sous Chef put together a menu of items that were not only some of our most popular, but also traveled the best.” Megan adds, “The most important thing we learned was to just go with it and to

be flexible.” SIENA PHOTO:
