North Valley Chorale About Us

The North Valley Chorale (NVC) is a voluntary, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization established in 2008. NVC is dedicated to the cultural, musical, and social enrichment of metropolitan Phoenix and its surrounding communities.

We serve the community by providing affordable and accessible performances of choral music from many traditions, eras, and cultures. Our repertoire ranges from classical to pop, patriotic and Broadway. We have released two CDs and anticipate a 10th Anniversary CD for 2018!

We are proud to be known as “the choir that cares.” We reach out to lift those who are suffering and in need. During the holidays and throughout the year we share our gifts of music, companionship and goods with the needy, ill and homeless. We have worked with many local organizations including St. Mary’s Food Bank, Lost Our Home, Feed My Starving Children, UMOM shelters, the Banner Alzheimer Institute (BAI), St. Matthew’s School and senior living communities.

We perform 3 main concerts per year, sing for local outreach events and tour annually. Last summer (2016) was our first international tour, covering Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Previously we performed at the Kennedy Center in DC for the National Memorial Day Choral Festival and .

November 23-27 we sing at New York City’s to kick off the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah and at Radio City Music Hall! December 1-3 we return to Arizona for The Music Man at the Orpheum Theater with Showtime Productions. This season closes with a glorious concert on December 9 featuring Handel’s Messiah at Church of the Beatitudes.

We have openings for singers for the 2017 – 2018 season, starting this August. We rehearse most Wednesday evenings at the Phoenix Boys Choir, 1131 E. Missouri Ave, Phoenix.

North Valley Chorale Eleanor Johnson*, Director, North Valley Chorale Eleanor Johnson, the founding director of the North Valley Chorale (NVC), has enriched Arizona with music for over 25 years. Under her inspiring leadership, the NVC has grown from 12 singers of sacred music in 2008 to nearly 60 singers with a repertoire including Broadway, pop, classical and patriotic music.

Mrs. Johnson recently led the NVC on its first international tour and to Kennedy Center in Washington, DC for the National Memorial Day Choral Festival. She is proud of this year’s Broadway Blast! concert and looks forward to the Chorale’s Handel's Messiah performance at Carnegie Hall and the opportunity for “five minutes of fame” on the Radio City Music Hall stage prior to the Rockette's Christmas Extravaganza.

When she is not teaching music or directing, Eleanor enjoys hiking, gardening, crossword puzzles and, of course, travelling with Graham, her love of 39 years.

Benchmark Show Choir Carolyn Nyland, Director and Choreographer

Making their debut with the North Valley Chorale is The Benchmark Show Choir from Benchmark Elementary in North Phoenix. They are led by NVC soprano and soloist, Carolyn Nyland. Carolyn created the Choir five years ago with 15 singers. Now the singers are from grades 3-6. It is clear that they love spreading their sweet musical sounds at school concerts, festivals and assisted living centers across the Valley. Carolyn is very proud of this hard- working group of students and sincerely appreciates the dedication of all the students, parents and principals to the music program at Benchmark. The NVC is excited to share the stage with this group of talented young performers.

Message from the Director

Putting together Broadway Blast has truly been a blast--from choosing and ordering the music, to rehearsals, planning meetings, production meetings, sectionals, recording of parts, dance videos, and, did I say rehearsals???? These productions do not come together by wishing, but through plain hard work and hours of practice.

My thanks go especially to Shannon Barrett who took the choreography "up another notch.” She not only wrote it, but taught the dances each week, made practice videos for each part, arrived early and left late to rehearsals, as well as worked privately with small groups--all that, while taking on a "big girl" job and running on rehearsals while I was away visiting family!!!! You're the tops dear friend and it's so wonderful watching you shine.

Special thanks also go to Carolyn Nyland and her Benchmark Choirs who have added so very much to the production. Carolyn is not only an amazing performer, but a strong leader with keen instincts, a great work ethic and kind, generous ways. We are truly blessed to have her with us.

Thanks also to  Steve Sugihara for his work on choreography with Shannon  Angie Schermitzler for her help with rehearsals and recordings  Mary Ann Iagulli for ALL the costumes she personally made as well as her coordination of all of our accessories  Joe Johnson for his production insights and leadership along with Dan Thomson  Mike Frassetti for yet again coming to our rescue and providing such great arrangements  Karen Thomson and Margaret Neno--all the hard work they do planning and organizing special events and ideas to help us with fundraising. Karen also leads our volunteers-- without whom no group can survive.  Chorale Board members under Dr. Anita Murcko's leadership.... such immense talent, such hard workers and such dear friends. Every director should be so blessed.

I saved the best for last--to each and every Chorale member--you continue to amaze and inspire me with your desire to grow and improve. Just when I think I might have pushed a bit too far, you go above and beyond and deliver in spades. I guess you could say that today I'm a pretty proud Mama! 
