    30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Alex Burns (Bowden) copyedits for a travel magazine but has always wanted to be a writer. Now the magazine is holding a contest and the winner not only lands a spot on the writing staff, but also gets a first-class ticket to anywhere in the world! Alex pitches a story about extreme sports photographer Cole Taylor (Beaudoin), but her editor suggests she also write from the angle of a non-adventurer trying risky sports herself. Her boyfriend Barton (Anthony Konechny, “The Christmas Train”) is supportive, but doesn’t see Alex as the daring type. Determined to realize her writing aspirations, Alex heads to Colorado, where she meets Cole and convinces him to be her guide in exchange for helping him at his gallery.     Talking Through the Wire Jennifer Fremlin, Huntingdon College

    Talking Through the Wire Jennifer Fremlin, Huntingdon College I am at something of a critical loss when it comes to discussing The Wire. As a feminist media theorist especially interested in filmic representations of race and gender, I am pretty well trained at deconstructing hegemonic instantiations of the privileging of whiteness in movies and on t.v., especially those that seem to offer themselves as radical critiques but end up simply reinscribing familiar hierarchies. Popular culture—hit t.v. programs, award-winning movies, Hollywood stars—offers an endless supply of material on which to hone my knife. This is mostly shooting fish in a barrel, instead of any great testament to my mad skills. But The Wire, HBO’s critically acclaimed yet apparently largely unwatched series, leaves me a bit flummoxed. The problem is, first, that I loved watching it, reveling in its intricate, almost Shakespearian or Dickensian handling of interwoven plots and themes of power and corruption at all levels: economic, political, juridical, educational, racial, journalistic and sexual. Characters are complex and multidimensional, revealed in their working and personal lives to be neither good or bad, but some of both, often at the same moment, or neither, just like the rest of us. They sometimes try to do the right thing, even if by dubious means, or make more money, or get laid, or help others, but just as often they fuck up, and their motives are a nice messy stew of righteousness and self-serving. The show solicits me as a smart viewer, which on the one hand I critically distrust, but on the other hand flatters me to no end.
