THE 2018 SEASON was one that the Bishops 1st XV Going into what is arguably the toughest schoolboy and coaching staff thoroughly enjoyed. We also had plenty of help from outside teams that were all in the top 10 of the schoolboy coaches, which was fantastic. The boys bought in rankings. First up was Paul Roos who finished the completely to the 2018 season, which made our jobs as season as the top team in SA. The boys were coaches much easier. The festival also ran over the annual Craven Week, which meant that we were missing five of our regular starters. The first game against Kingswood was different for our boys as it was the first time they would play under lights with a 7pm kick off. Here, our forwards dominated and put the backs on the front foot, allowing for some great tries and we won that match 19-10. The final game of the festival saw us going up against a Hilton side that was having a good season and were unbeaten. Once again the forwards laid the foundations for the backs to finish off – and finish off they did! We were able to come out with a 24-17 victory and, for the second time in 2018, completed an unbeaten tour. The start of the third term is always a tricky one to face as the boys come back after a long holiday, however, they showed no signs of rust when they put Strand to the sword, beating them 81–5. SACS away was next and, in a stuttering performance, with Bishops never in danger of defeat, we ended up winning 22-20 – far closer than it should have been. It was now time for our traditional rivals, St Andrews, to come to town and, for me, the first half was the best rugby the Bishops team played all year – we looked really slick and dominated all facets of the game. The second half saw us take our foot off the pedal, but we still ran out convincing 38-22 winners. One of the most anticipated matches in the calendar was the reverse fixture against Wynberg and what a game it was! Both sides went at each other very hard for 70 minutes, playing some great rugby and thrilling the crowds. It took a last-minute penalty from Wynberg to knock over our boys who fought until the very end. Finally, it was time for the last game of the season, which was the big one against Rondebosch. The conditions were horrendous for both teams, with gale-force winds and rain spoiling the brand of rugby that both teams wanted to play. for the 2nd XV of Bishops. 2018 WAS A SOLID YEAR 2018 SQUAD With regular call-ups from the 1st XV, building Raafiq Adams, Tio Bakre, Kyle Beley, Gregory Bolus, continuity was quite tough. This was a great send-off for our matric players who really played a vital role in welcoming and guiding the Grade 11s to senior rugby. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY the last few I would like to thank Luke Kuhn, Cameron Doyle and months have been. From an absolute bunch of Eddy Bester for being part of the coaching staff and for strangers, to a tight, cohesive family like structure, their time and effort they put aside for the team. I also where everyone’s interests were put aside for the team. want to thank our captain, Terrance Petterson (TP), for The year started off in celebratory fashion with a leading the boys every week with such pride and thumping win over a below-par Tygerberg outfit. This passion, a true leader whose commitment to the team victory gave us a false sense of security and the was undeniable. following week we were humbled on our own turf by a quality SACS outfit. That thumping defeat, one of the darkest days of my coaching career, was the cornerstone of our successes that were to follow. Below: Reuben Mndende The training week to follow will never be forgotten and the harshness of training experienced that week could only be compared to that of the infamous “Kamp Staaldraad”. That character-building infused week of training led to a winning streak that included stunning victories over Paul Roos, Boland Landbou and Wynberg. With the core of our squad either injured or with the 2nd XV, the first Rondebosch derby was always going to be an uphill battle, one in which we got pipped in the final seconds by a team that, quite frankly, wanted it more. Back to the drawing board we went and the third term produced some great rugby from “the stripes”. First, we swept aside an English touring side before putting in a great effort away at Paarl Gym, where the scoreline did not fairly reflect the game. The SACS away fixture was arguably our biggest of the season, as I wanted to see how much we had progressed as a team. After dominating the match, we narrowly went down in the final minutes. Although we didn’t win the match, I felt we won the hearts. Good Karma was to follow with two closely fought derby wins over Wynberg and Rondebosch, making me feel privileged to have coached this team. We won games and we celebrated those wins accordingly. We lost games and learned lessons from those defeats. Results are important, but there is so much more to the game of rugby. The friendships and memories made will last a lifetime and that is far more valuable than any result we had this season.

A GLANCE THROUGH the U16B results for 2018 could prove quite frustrating and confusing. There were some outstanding performances like the 59-0 victory over Boland Landbou and the sublime 45-7 victory over Rondebosch, however, there were too many bitterly disappointing losses like the two against SACS, the loss to Rondebosch in the first derby and the penultimate game against Wynberg. Since U9, these boys had lost to Bosch, but they managed to turn things around in the 2018 season. There is much to be positive about throughout Prep rugby. The U9 age group has good depth and they certainly enjoyed the first year of contact rugby. The U10 group worked hard and will grow in time. We need to ensure that they are enjoying the game. U11 teams had a very good season. All three sides played good rugby and there is a good balance of size and speed. Speed is always that most sought after commodity in order for Bishops rugby to flourish. The U12s played some good rugby, they have talent,

Coaches coached well and practice days are always a hive of activity: boys being put through their paces, focusing on the basics – passing, catching, avoiding contact and correct contact techniques. Parents play a key role in our rugby programme. The lifting to matches, the sideline support and general enthusiasm for the game make rugby season a pleasure. Long may this continue as our young charges grapple to master the skills required to play the Bishops way, bold in attack and resolute in defence.

THE 2018 RUGBY SEASON kicked off with the now annual traditional Skeeles Sevens. It has grown to include all age groups, with the U13s being the marquee event on the Friday evening, which acts as a celebration of the start of the season. The rest of the age groups play on the Saturday morning. The joy of props playing as backs, the worry and procrastination of backs playing as props - joy to behold! The legendary Richard Skeeles, after whom the festivals are named, would have loved it. We need to create more of these events where there is less focus on scores; what is important is seeing the ball move and the sheer joy PB014_Geniiof 2017-08-01T11:41:08+02:00 playing this great game.

HAVE WE LOST the essence of the game of rugby, where the focus is on fun, growing the individual and ensuring that we teach the right values? While many will argue that this is not case, the stats, the sidelines and intensity during games will tell a different story. I have referred to this change in coaching style, ethos and emphasis in a previous article. Fortunately, the injury was not so severe that he couldn’t continue to lead an active, physical lifestyle and became his first passion, leading to provincial colours while at Bishops. At the same time, he took the opportunity to do the schoolboy referee course, joined the referees’ society and started refereeing games at school. Calum finished at Bishops in 2017 and has moved to Scotland to Edinburgh University, where he is studying biomedical science. His philosophy on refereeing is a disarmingly simple one, “I always want to be seen to be enjoying myself out there and I will smile a lot,” he explains. He also believes that the voice is often a more powerful tool than the whistle and believes in communicating clearly to players, especially when it comes to offside lines. Calum has caught the eye of the referees’ society in Scotland, a welcome youthful addition to their ranks and has been increasingly called in to referee club games, many of which are women’s matches. The River Liffey in Ireland’s capital

The Bishops 1st XV will tour Ireland in March 2019. Richard Evans (OD 1995F) shares some insight on schools rugby there.

SCHOOLS RUGBY is very different in Ireland – but don’t be fooled, it is fiercely competitive at U18 level. Most junior rugby players in Ireland start their introduction to rugby at clubs, not at school – there are a handful of private schools that have junior-school teams, but these are few and far between. Rugby is played at high schools, so there is a serious drop-off at club level in the U14 to U18 age groups.
