Sancerre, Terroir Silex, Géard Fiou, Artisan Vigneron 13.5% Vol 2018 £55.80 Gerard Fiou started with just 5 hectares in the beautiful village of Saint-Satur in the Central Vineyards of the Loire Valley. Today he has 34 hectares and the domaine is the only estate in Sancerre with equal parts limestone and flint in the vineyard which contributes to the pure and fresh texture of this particular Sancerre. A clear lemon-gold in hue. Very full and expressive on the nose, with notes of grapefruit and greengage, full and plump rather than lean. The palate reveals this to be Sauvignon in the creamy style, but with attractive acidity and a crisp, racy finish.

Gewurztraminer « Les Princes Abbés », Domaine Schlumberger 2016 £51.75 13.5% Vol Domaine Sclumberger are the largest privately owned vineyards in Alsace. Yields are deliberately restricted to maintain quality. Golden yellow in color with light green reflections of good intensity. On the nose a dominance of fragrances is candied based on fruity notes crystallized peach, spices, ginger and a slight floral character. The palate is full bodied but mellow and fresh showing the fruit qualities on the nose. The structure of the wine remains light in spite of this hint of sweetness.

Pinot Blanc « Les Princes Abbés », Domaine Schlumberger 2016 £36.30 13% Vol Bright pale yellow colour. The nose is aromatic with notes of citrus and yellow fruit – intense and rich. On the palate, the onset is fresh but without excess with a slight sparkling note. The middle mouth is fatty while remaining dry. In the finish we find warmth associated with freshness. This Pinot Blanc is nicely balanced, very pleasant

Pernand – Vergelesses, Côte de Beaune, O. Leflaive 13 % Vol 2015 £67.65 The perfume, purity and poise of this wine is very similar to that of Corton-Charlemagne – it is considered to be a ‘poor man’s Corton’ with good reason. Lightly creamy with a tangy, mineral edge, showing notes of ripe pear and green apples. Very fine and graceful.

Auxey-Duresses, La Macabrée, Côte de Beaune, Olivier Leflaive, 2016 £67.55 12.5% Vol Olivier Leflaive’s parcel lies next to the Meursault appellation and shares some of the latter’s richer, clay soils, peppered with a layer of small calcareous stones. Meursault ‘lite’ perhaps, though no diminutive, This Auxey -Duresses offers an appealingly fresh take on the former’s butterscotch breadth and richness.

Spice, more peach, and a tiny bit of citrus on the mid-palate and through the finish.

La Tabardonne, Domaine St Amant, Côtes du Rhône Villages 2014 £49.95 13,5% Vol Even established Condrieu producers from the north of the region have been happy to sample (and purchase!) this wine on the premise of quality and value for money. A viognier/ roussanne blend whose peachy opulence underscored by toasty oak makes this a sexy beast.
