Quote:

“The essence of coaching is getting players to do what they don’t want to do in order to achieve individual and team goals.” Bill Walsh

Quote:

“You have to understand what loses before you understand what wins.” Bill Parcells

BILL PARCELLS RULES: 1. You don’t want to beat yourself. 2. Must be intolerable. 3. Must convey to team.

Quote: “Know who you can coach successfully.” –

1. Can’t coach everyone. 2. Jeff Van Gundy wants to coach guys that he wouldn’t want to introduce to his daughter.

NO 3 S’S: Soft Stupid Selfish

From Pat Riley:

You must have coaching confidence…Players don’t care about what you look like, how you talk, or where you are from.

PLAYERS CARE ABOUT 4 THINGS: 1. Confidence 2. Sincere 3. Reliable 4. Trust Worthy

COACHING NUGGETS:

. Don’t make things too complicated. . Write out your entire system and cut half of it out.

“Always important to gain knowledge but not add to it.”

. The women’s game is all about layups. Who shoots the most and makes the most…

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL . Always be sure that the entire team speaks the same language.

Philosophy: Balance wins, defend, rebound, low T.O.’s, play inside out, best shot.

. NO PRE-SNAP PENALTIES: NO MISTAKES, EVER! o Always be lined up o Never screw up a substitution o Never screw up a matchup o Know the play

. As a coach you must always be able to get the ball inbounds. That is your responsibility.

Figure 1: Triangle

. Screening is one of the most important skills in the game.

. Screening: Regardless of talent and skill, you can be a great screening team.

. Screen the same way every time!

SCREEN: 1. Sprint to screen 2. Jump Stop 3. R hand over L wrist 4. Chest to defenders shoulder

. RULE: After you screen, always step to the ball or basket.

YOU MUST HAVE 3 OUTLETS: 1. Middle 2. Sideline 3. Behind

. RULE: It is the inbounders job to be sure everyone is lined up and in their spots. Don’t step out of bounds until this is done. NO PRE-SNAP PENALTIES

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL Figure 2: Triangle . Get the ball inbounds . Be quick to spots . Be lined up

GOAL: We are going to score more points on BLOB Plays then the other team.

. Due to scouting, if you know where it is going, how do you ever give up a basket? . BLOB plays always have someone go strong corner. . Consider BLOB plays that go to the weakside corner. . Sprint on all screens.

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL DEFENSE: 1. Foot behind 2. Foot in front 3. Arm bar up 4. Must defend the cut to the rim and the strong side corner 5. Middle basket defender must go; Inside, Outside, Inside 6. Weak side elbow defender is a clogger. 7. (ELC) Early, Loud, and Continuous 8. Stay attached to shooters 9. Provide eye help 10. Lock and trail all shooters, never give space 11. The man defending the screener does not help

TEACHING POINTS: Teach progressions – Example: On the catch look to shoot, then look at the Hi-Low, then weak side.

What do you do SLOB? You need a score with no timeouts left…

Be sure players get the ball, post player and basket in a direct line.

NOTE:

. A deep screen and wheel gets you a deep catch.

. Get players post depth.

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL

NOTE:

. No free throw offensive

rebounding allowed EVER!

. Use full body box outs

. Giving up an offensive rebound

off a free throw is an undisciplined play.

WHY PLAYERS SHOULD RUN:

1. Undisciplined play 2. Lack of intensity

FREE THROW OFFENSE:

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL NOTE:

. Have actions off free throws…especially if you’re behind. . Have a plan off all free throws. . Take advantage of the pre-snap!

NOTE:

You want to get to the basket and free throw line. You want paint catches or a good 3 shot.

What do you do for a jump ball?

FINAL THOUGHTS:

It is all about transition defense.

1. Think about how many you send back. a. You want to send back as many as it takes not to give up transition baskets. NO LAYUPS!!!

YOU MUST: 1. Take away layups 2. Don’t Foul 3. Protect the 3pt. Line

WHAT WINS: Discipline of perimeter players and effectiveness of your bigs will determine your success.

1. Full Body Box Outs 2. 5 Players Box Out 3. Gang Rebounds

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL Rebounding Language: Turn and check then engage the rebound

Closeouts are pivotal for your success.

Limit quality shot attempts.

Closeout Language: Turn, sprint, 3 quarters hands go up, weight goes back, stutter step…Keep high hands, then 1 high hand and 1 deflection hand.

Trace the ball.

Your goal on a closeout is to force a 2 point contested jump shot.

TEAM RULE:

Must be the first to the floor. Get every 50/50 ball. Any time the ball is not in possession, it is a 50/50 ball. Chart it!

Being the first to the floor builds team spirit and camaraderie. The entire team picks up the player.

Teach players to always be thinking help on defense.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

How far are you willing to go to win? It’s not a game of genius, game of repetition.

3 TEAMS AFFECT THE GAME 1. Home Team 2. Away Team 3. Referees

How are you going to prepare to beat the other two teams? Take care of the officials…get whatever advantage you can!

John Wooden: How many days of practice do you have available to get prepared and survive your first game?

- Daily repetition in small doses.

- Accountability rules apply to everyone.

- Keep things simple.

LIFE EXPERIENCES PROGRAM:

- Who do you impact and who impacted you? - 2 X’s a month plan events for the team off the floor. - Consider motivational speakers. - Expose kids to life outside of basketball. - If you want people to support your program, support them. - Teach kids to have an appreciation for other people with talent. (Band, Attend a play) - Think outside the box. - Send letters to all players and teachers regarding your interest to see student athletes excel on the court and in the classroom. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PRO AND COLLEGE COACH? Pro – Coach better get along with the community College – Community better get along with the coach

- You need to know your players…Get to know your personnel…Only way you can truly be successful.

- Smart to know your community.

- Player development is #1

- In the pros it’s about getting the best player the ball

- Always drill the P/R

PICK & ROLL: - Always use two dribbles…Use the crab dribble to get set up. - First dribble is the read, second dribble is attack. - Attack the first help man - If basket defender steps up, use a bounce pass to feed your teammate, chances are the close out from the basket defender has high hands and is setting up to take a charge.

- The pass makes the shot.

- “Good coaching is putting players in position to succeed.”

- Teach players to jump and take off early – SEE DRILL 2

TREE KIT: - Ever guard must have it - Use the floater, because when you jump stop you become too small.

HURDLE DRILL: - 50 Jumps in 30 Seconds

- Name drills after kids, makes them feel important and engages them.

WHAT IS COACHING? 1. Mental 2. Counseling 3. Positive Contradiction 4. Teach how to properly play 5. Don’t be afraid to coach them

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL - Always eliminate yourself and give the best advice you can. If you’re in the business for the right reasons, there will be another great kid just behind him to coach up.

- “Basketball will take you wherever you want to go if you do things right. If you don’t, it will show you some bad doors.”

DRILLS:

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL Speaker 4 – Kelvin Sampson:

REBOUNDING: 1. Demand and teach toughness 2. Accountability 3. Can’t be afraid of confrontation

- Confrontation is what separates coaches…Don’t be afraid to tell it how it is…

3 PEOPLE WHO CAN’T HAVE A BAD PRACTICE: 1. Head Coach 2. Best Player 3.

- Keep track of 50-50 balls

- Its more important to be a great practice coach then a great game coach.

GOAL: - Wanted to offensive rebound 50% of missed shots…typically 15 shots per. game.

REBOUNDING: - Must be physical and want a fist fight - Offensive rebound, step through opposite foot and swim move.

- Every drill has a time and score element

DRILL: - 3 on 3 Shell, Defense stays and gets points for rebounds…

ROCKETS: - 100 poss. Per. game - 25 per. quarter…must get 8 to 10 touches per. quarter on offensive rebounds to help keep the ball alive. - If you can’t get the offensive rebound you better tip it to keep the ball alive.

IF IT HAPPENS: - Apply this… 1) Accident 2) Coincidence 3) Habit

- Practice is designed to create good habits.

- Use the bubble tool. Take is everywhere. If a player gets 10 + rebounds in a game, he gets to sign it.

- “Every shot is a missed shot.”

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL FINAL THOUGHTS: - Every community has an old coach…find him and bring him into your basketball family. Provide him a role. This is a powerful industry because of the influence you have on people. Imagine what it will be like when you’re no longer coaching…

Speaker 4 – Kevin McHale: Houston Rockets

POST PLAY:

3 WAYS TO GET THE BALL IN THE PAINT: 1) Pass 2) Dribble 3) Rebound

- Being a post player takes hard work… Nothing comes easy. You have to be ready to BUMP & GRIND.

P/R ACTION: - Set a P/R, sprint and put your eyes on the defender and put your butt into them, then post.

- You must convince you post players to fight in the paint.

POSTING UP: - Your first job as a post player is to get into the paint and own it! - When you get where you want it, sit!

- Play a lot of 1 on 1 from different positions.

TEACH: - The guard must dribble opposite the post defender to create the best angle to feed the post. - If the post player is fronted, he should go to the high post. ***This means a post player must have 1 GREAT MOVE over each shoulder a high post jumper, 1 dribble move. Advanced players have a counter move. Post players only need one great move; they don’t need a package of moves to be successful, especially if they don’t have one great move! - Encourage you post players to run the pipe because it will draw defensive attention. For example, a 5 man that really runs the floor well needs attention from the defensive teams guards because they will need to protect the paint until the post defender gets back. This will open up lots of open transition shots!

CLINIC NOTES BY: BRANDON ROSENTHAL E-MAIL: [email protected] TWITTER: @COACHROSENTHAL

- Play lots of 3 on 3 and have players compete at different positions. Teaching post players how to play guard positions helps them learn angles, get open, pass and dribble better. Teach them to play like post players on the perimeter. 3 on 3 on one side of the floor with this action teaches players how to properly get open, pass, and cut. It also teaches them how to play inside out and cut off the post.

- Posting up is like the box out drill. Helpful when explaining angles to posts. Example: If a player drives baseline, box the post defender out towards the perimeter.

- Develop 1 Shot…then a counter move will naturally develop.

JUMP HOOK: - Ass low, gets you power - Step hard opposite direction your intending to go - Then finish and extend

TIP: First shot in a game should be a hard strong hook over a shot blocker…It gets them wanting to bite for the next move. It will set the post defender up all game.

- Develop bigs with all the same drills you do with other players.

- MAKE BIGS FEEL SPECIAL! THEY ARE ONE OF A KIND.
