UNITED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION

A. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

United Youth Development Association (UYDA) is a not for profit, community based ,youth-led, nonpolitical and non-religious organization which has been founded by a group of 15 young people in Ntungamo, who united together to tackle the root causes of increased of new HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies among vulnerable young people in western .

B. MISSION: UYDA aims to empower vulnerable young people on SRHR including HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention in western region of Uganda. C. VISION: Zero new HIV/AIDS, zero AIDS related deaths and zero unwanted pregnancies among vulnerable young people in western region of Uganda. D. GOAL To reduce new HIV/AIDS infections, unwanted pregnancies and AIDS related deaths among vulnerable young people in western Uganda.

E. MAIN OBJECTIVES:

1. To increase HIV/AIDS awareness on among young people in western region of Uganda. 2. To increase accessibility to condoms for vulnerable young people and to encourage them to use condoms and to change their unsafe sexual behaviour practices in the western Uganda.

3. To provide free VCT services for vulnerable young people in western region of Uganda.

F.PROGRAMS:

UYDA has 3 programs: 1) HIV/AIDS Prevention Program(HPP) 2) SRHR promotion program(SPP) 3) People Living With HIV/AIDS Nutritional Support Program(PLWHNSP)

H.MAIN ACTIVITIES:

1. To create and train anti-HIV/AIDS clubs of vulnerable young people in order to help us to spread the HIV/AIDS prevention information among other young people in western region of Uganda. 2. To organize youth competitions, campaigns, teaching sessions and video screenings on HIV transmission and prevention among young people in western region of Uganda. 3. To provide comprehensive sexual reproductive health education including condom use and safe sex promotion among vulnerable young people in western region of Uganda. 4. To sensitize sexual active young people to use condoms in their sex without fear and easier access to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention services within western region of Uganda. 5. To provide condoms and VCT services to vulnerable young people in order to promote HIV/AIDS prevention, early decision to HIV treatment and care based on HIV/AIDS status.

F. TARGET GROUP United youth targets vulnerable young people and our annual target number is 50,000 vulnerable young people within the following categories:

 Young sex workers  Street young people  Young widows  Young Orphans  Young people living with HIV/AIDS  Adolescent Students  Abandoned and neglected young people  Young men who sex men(MSM)  Young women who sex women (WSW),etc.

H. RECENT ACTIVITIES:

United Youth Development Association (UYDA) has implemented many projects in Western region of Uganda in which we have impacted more than 430 thousands young people within a decade ago and we are still impacting our community people, for example these are our most recent projects:

A. SUGAR DADDY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN PROJECT

This project started from March 2016 and it will end by March 2020.It has been funded by VIIV health care under positive action for children fund. This project had tangible impact within our communities because we have had the following results:

1. 50 peer educators have been trained successfully on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, peer pressures, safe sexual decision making and behavior change in Ntungamo secondary school. 2. 60 anti-HIV/AIDS clubs of 5658 adolescent female students and 302 male students, have been created and trained successfully at 60 schools in Ntungamo, Kabale and Mbarara . 3. 98% of adolescent students in our clubs responded to gain sufficient skills on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention including HIV risk factors like use of drugs, sexual abuse, bad sexual behaviors,etc. 4. 100% of our female adolescent students and male students in our clubs, are able to demonstrate condom use. 5. 60 sugar daddy and SRHR awareness sessions have been conducted successfully through which we have reached successfully 16,327 students (14,210 females and 2,117 males) who have been educated on sexual reproductive health and rights mainly safe decision making, safe sex practice and bad sexual behavior change. 6. 45 VCT sessions have been conducted successfully through which we have reached successfully 12,179 young students (9,871 females and 2,308 males ) who have been tested HIV/AIDS during all 45 VCT sessions carried out at 30 schools in Ntungamo, Kabale and Mbarara districts of Uganda unfortunately around 3.4% of them became HIV/AIDS positive. 7. 100% of all young students (414 young people (395 females and 19 males ) who became HIV/AIDS positive have been transferred to ARVs departments for early HIV treatment, care and follow up.

This project started from July 2016 until today with the support from MTV-Staying alive foundation and Katuna city AIDS program. Working with United Katuna Youth for HIV/AIDS prevention (UKYHP),we have impacted our community people within 12 months ago in the following ways: 1. We trained 20 peer educators (15 Males and 5 females) in Katuna city during July 2018.

2. We have created and trained 20 new anti-HIV/AIDS clubs through which we have reached successfully 1793 young people(1532 females and 261 males who have been educated on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention in Katuna region from August 2018 to October 2018.

3. We have distributed 10,000 condoms during 20 condom use campaigns in Katuna region from November 2018 to January 2019.

4. In all 20 condom use campaigns, we have reached successfully 1,793 young people (1,553 females and 240 males) from November 2018 to January 2019.

5. We have conducted successfully 20 HIV youth competitions including theatres shows in which we have reached successfully reached 1,890 people( 1,512 females and 378

males) from February 2019 to April 2019.

6. We have conducted 10 VCT sessions through which we have reach we have reached 873 young people with 713 females and 160 males have been reached successfully and tested for HIV/AIDS unfortunately 5.3 per cent of them are HIV/AIDS positive and they have been referred for antiretroviral treatments into nearest health and VCT centers in Katuna city
