Baltic and Kaliningrad St Petersberg 59 57.99 N 30 15.06 E Jonno Barrett (Whirlaway of Percuil) - 14/08/2018

Fourth Edition 333. Both Central Rover and Krestovsky Yacht Club can be noisy. We chose Krestovsky because nearer for Metro, but in fact discovered that Uber is incredibly cheap and was a far better option for all travel round the city. Shower at Krestovsky better when available. Better shelter from Westerly at KYC Electricity reliable, but water episodic.

I don't know whether this is unique to the area or to Denmark or more general in Scandinavia but it is a useful feature.

Nykobing, Falster, Sund 54 44.83 N 11 52.32 E Miranda Delmar-Morgan (Polar Bear) - 17/08/2015

The Guldborg Sound between Falster and was dredged to 2.1m this summer, according to the HM at . One working vessel apparently loads up with timber fairly regularly and takes it to Wismar, he draws 2m.

The King Frederick IX bridge at Nykobing opens approximately every half hour, depending on the crossing of the train to and whether or not it is running late. You can lie against a jetty just south of the bridge within view of the electronic digital clock on the bridge. Times are provided by Banedanmark, Vejledende gennemsejlingsplan for Kong (sic) Frederick IX’s Bro Nykobing Falster.

Baltic sea levels are monitored every 30km in Denmark and the levels, Vandstand, are on the Danish Meteorological Institute website, www.dmi.dk/hav/maalinger/vandstand and will show you detailed predictions.

It was blowing an easterly F6-7 and the wider sections produced quite a lot of fetch when we passed through today. There were nets on both sides of the channel so it is essential to have your line of sight and passage through firmly fixed in your gaze. Double flags indicate the end of a line, but seemed very close to the channel. Transits need close adherence. We set our echo sounder to 2m and it warbled its head off to such a degree that we gave up and switched it off. Soundings came up to 1.4m at one point, but the fact is that we never ground to a halt and never felt as though we had bumped the bottom. Navionics shows a dredged channel, our German charts were out of date, and C-Map on our chart plotter also failed to show it. So Navionics on the Ipad gets a pat on the back. The Nykobing F marina only has a datum of 2m, we happen to have 2.3m by my lead line on 17 August 2015 with a baromer of 1010mb. We also expected an extra 48cm on soundings according to the DMI data. I’ve no idea if we have experienced this or not. There’s no doubt that weed confuses the echo sounder. All you can do is stay on the transits, in the centre of the channels and hope for the best! You can catch a train direct to Copenhagen, about every half hour and they take about 1hr 30mins. Nice HM here too. Honesty box for the envelopes in a container on the little clubhouse wall, which also provide the wifi and shower/loo codes.HM visits daily but not present all day long. Very nice chap with good English. The far/north side of the marina with a separate entrance appears to be a motor yacht club. Cash machines in town, very good supermarket, MENY, as well as a Lidl. Berths are mostly boxes but there is also one pontoon.Fish shop near the marina. Nykobing F is known this way, in other words Nykobing Falster, to distinguish it from another Nykobing elsewhere in Denmark, details of which escape me for the moment but I can't find anywhere to save this as a draft so I am going to send this info as it is for the moment.

The viking ship museum at Ladby is well worth the 6 Km walk. (There is a bus but it does not run on Sunday) In addition to the remains of the ship burial and the museum there is a replica being built using authentic tools and methods which is fascinating.

Åland Islands. Pilot guides 60 12.87 N 20 9.738 E Nigel Wollen (Wish Hound) - 04/07/2017

There is an excellent guide to the harbours and anchorages in the Åland Islands called Åland Gasthafen, Fahrwasser, Ankerplatze. Ther is a German edition or a Swedish/ Finnish edition (not English) but it contains excellent aerial photos and plans and seems to be the most popular guide with the locals. It is available to purchase in most of the harbour offices and costs 39 Euros. Published by PQR (www.pqr.ax). We have been using it extensively in spite of very basic German knowledge!

Kastelholm 60 9.611 N 20 9.207 E Nigel Wollen (Wish Hound) - 03/07/2017

The berthing is on both sides of 3 pontoons. The berths on the south side of the first pontoon are on stern buoy with bows to the pontoon, and are probably the best. The rest are either box berths or rather narrow booms.

It provides excellent shelter in northerlies and is a delightful spot.

The Gasthamn is run by a delightful family and they run a small shop that sells basic provisions ( bread, milk, eggs etc). No other shops within walking distance.

Germany Eider River 54 22.21 N 9 5.278 E Nigel Ringrose (CANTATA) - 21/04/2016

We find the Eider River is a straightforward and much more enjoyable way to go to and from the Baltic than taking the Kiel Canal in its entirety. Access from the West is easier now that the entrance flood barrier and locks are in place. Access from the East through the connecting Gieselau canal (from the Kiel Canal) is easy. En route, Friedrichstadt (locally known as little Venice) and Tonning make good stopovers. And both have water and electricity alongside.

Though Tonning is inaccessible at low water, once inside yachts remain upright in the deep, soft mud. At Friedrichstadt, the small YC offers the use of a trolley and cans to collect diesel from the garage close by.

We learned that all bridges can open on Sundays by arrangement. We are obtaining more specific information on this for the FPI.

Kiel Canal: Page 20 Gieslau Kanal strongly recommended for a stop en route through the Canal. Very peaceful, berthing on a well designed jetty (not pontoon) with room for a nUmber of yachts without rafting. However, make sure you are well secured as there is a curious surge that comes in from the wash from ships in the Canal. Page 19: payment for the transit of the Canal is currently 18 Euros. There seems to be some confusion about how or when to pay with rumours of having to use a machine, but we paid at the sweet shop above the Holtenau lock while we were in the lock .

Kiel Canal dues Miranda Delmar-Morgan (Polar Bear) - 13/06/2017

Until at least mid-July yachts can transit free of charge since the authorities can't collect the dues at the moment. There was an accident at the canal with a yachtsman injured, so you can't pay on the central lock anymore, I understand. They are building new waiting areas on the north side which will have cash/card machines, but not in place until either the end of July or the end of the season, timing apparently uncertain. There will also be a cash/card machine on the Tiessenkai. This report comes in part by feedback from another RCC member, Anthony Wells, and also from my daughter, Arabella Sprot, who lives in Berlin, and I asked her to ring the authorities for me.

Holtenau Locks, Kiel 54 22.06 N 10 9.246 E Miranda Delmar-Morgan (Polar Bear) - 10/06/2017

The payment arrangements for yachts (Sportboote) are being 're-structured'. Until at least July 2017 passage through the Kiel Canal is free since they can't collect the dues at the moment. A new waiting area is being built. So, according to my daughter in Berlin who has rung the locks on my behalf, the payment arrangements will be as follows: You go to the floating pontoons on the north side which will be sign-posted as the Waiting Area and there will be a new cash/debit/credit card machine adjacent to this area. There should also be a member of staff available. There will be a second machine outside the lock on the Tiessenkai.

The Moderort Rinne between Wolgast and Zecherin in the south Peenestrom shows 1.9m on German folios. Navionics give 1.7m. German electronic chart software gives least depth of 2.0m. I passed through it today with barometric pressure of 1018hpa and a light easterly breeze, and had a least depth of 2.4m. Pea soup colour gives no hint of shoal areas,. Well buoyed and good transit marks. The eagles were a bonus, but a lot of dead standing trees. Beautiful countryside. Zecherin Bridge openings in summer 2015 are: 0545, 0940, 1145, 1645, and 2045hrs. Northbound yachts were allowed through first. Channel is wider than it looks and there is room to pass other yachts, but not much room. Polar Bear draws 1.9m before being loaded with cruising clutter.

Your Baltic cruising guide is a great book, that I would like to contribute to. I have to additions to my town lübeck:

The historic yachts are in the Holstenhafen, rather than the Hansahafen.

The one pontoon and the scant facilities in the Hansahafen have been replaced by the newly built „Newport“. 45 berths mostly finger jetties for yachts up to 40m. And a nice restaurant.

This is a real destination and a great improvement. Best regards, Thomas

Grøtsund(et) In a fresh SW a short and uncomfortable chop quickly builds up in the NE approach down Ullsfjord to Grøtsundet making progress to windward torturously slow. In these conditions, for instance if bound for Tromsø, calmer water can be found in Langsundet between Reinoya and Ringvassoya. The resulting increase in speed and comfort may make up for the extra distance sailed. ('Norway', 3rd edition, p.254)

Vannvag, Norway 70 4.360 N 19 59.36 E Clive Woodman (Arctic Princess) - 03/04/2017

When last visited in 2015, it was possible for a visiting yacht to tie up on the floating pontoon system in the north west corner of the inner harbour. However in 2017 this was fully occupied by small local fishing vessels.

However, visiting yachts can lie alongside the substantial original fishing wharf (marked as NO2 on Navionics charts) on the south side of the harbour. This now acts as the public wharf. It is roughly fendered with old truck tyres and a wooden fender board is essential. There is electricity available from the shed on the wharf and a moderately well stocked Joker supermarket 50m from the wharf. Diesel can be obtained by jerry can from a pump just outside the supermarket.

The wharf immediately to port after entering the inner harbour (marked as wharf 1 on Navionics charts) is reserved for fishing vessels and yachts are not encouraged to moor here.

In settled weather it might be possible for a small yacht to anchor in the basin between the inner and outer mole walls ( the latter only being shown on the most recent charts) but a kedge anchor would be needed to avoid swinging into the main entrance channel.

As with many of the harbours in this area, the harbour can be subject to violent squalls coming down from the surrounding mountains and doubling up on lines is strongly recommended.

Very nice little marina, quite tight for space, particularly once berths have filled and yachts are lining the walls. Bigger yachts can lie on the outer walls of second basin. Major works in progress, they seem to be expanding fishing basin. Yellow baffles on moles highly visible from western approach. Very nice marina manager, Jo Macko, ex Polish navy, speaks very good English as well as other languages.

Token machine on wall outside the office for jetons for electric and water. Very good info touch screen with choice of languages, giving forecasts, NTMs which include info if ranges are active or not, Polish Hydrographic office website.

Marina offers a free taxi service to take you and your gerry cans to a petrol station, unless you want over 150 litres, in which case they will arrange for a truck delivery to marina. Petrol and diesel pumps planned before end of 2015. Laundry facilities, I think but haven't checked these yet. Very well run marina. Not sure about Camping Gaz, this seems harder to come by.

Nice town with a grander past as a spa town. Good view from cathedral via lift, nice museum. Redout by marina has a restaurant within it. Marina bar has limited menu. Several seaside restaurants towards the lighthouse, otherwise there are restaurants Iin town, a short walk away. Several good small shops and mini supermarkets, and fruit and veg kiosks on the road to town. Quite a lot of tower block flats but many have balconies with pots and plants. It has a wealthier feel, and flourishing tourist trade flocking to the beautiful sandy beaches.

A hint of a scend during our visit in quiet weather this will undoubtedly be worse in bad weather. Eastern mole extends slightly beyond western mole and they both curve westwards slightly so they should offer better protection in E/NE winds. Obelisk to east of lighthouse provides a leading line. Pirate boats and Viking ships all provide colour and interest. Striking dockside warehouse buildings, and working wharves with timber for loading. Handsome brick lighthouse, so it has an interesting approach. Marina is beneath the new elegant suspended road bridge. Town name is pronounced as Ko-ob-check We've enjoyed our visit despite the musical battle between the karaoke at the marina bar and the band in the redoubt. ah well... it is a Friday night in late July,.....

Very attractive harbour in Höga Kusten at north end of Gaviksfjärden. It is approached from the south through 2 very narrow but well marked channels (we never found less than 3 m). 3rd edition page 203. The first phone number for the bridge opening is wrong. It should be +46 611 15687 (not 156817 which is the number of a rather unamused old lady!). The bridges are not manned and a phone call is essential. They usually offer 0930 or 1830, but will open at other times. Only one man to open both bridges, who hares round in his van, so there is an interlude between opening of the bridges which necessitates "marking time" in shallow middle lagoon.. N.B. The fuel berth on the mainland north of Norra Sundet is not there as at 27/7/2017, and has apparently sunk. There is no information as to whether or when it will be reinstated. If going north, nearest fuel station is at Ulvöhamn, if going south at Sundsvall. The facilities in the northern Gasthamn (Norra Sundet) include water and electricity but only 2 very basic toilet/ showers on a pontoon. There are much better facilities( including a washing machine) at Nattviken which is within easy walking distance and uses the same passcode for access.
