7 Neighbourhood & History

Dollis Hill consists of the streets surrounding the spectacular Gladstone Park. The 86 acres of green space are named after the politician William Gladstone who served both as British Prime Minister four times, and as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Gladstone stayed many times with friends who owned the now demolished , and was known to enjoy the stunning grounds. Mark Twain, the renowned American author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, stayed in Dollis Hill House in the summer of 1900. He wrote, “Dollis Hill comes nearer to being a paradise than any other home I ever occupied.” Dollis Hill played a crucial part in the Second World War; Colossus, the first electronic computer and prototype for the code-breaking computer used at was built at the Post Office Research Station in Dollis Hill and the rarely used alternative Cabinet War Room bunker for ’s government (which is occasionally opened to the public) was dug underground here. The nearby Cricklewood Pumping Station was used as a location in the 1958 film ‘A Night To Remember’ which depicts the sinking of the Titanic.
