Dear Parishioners,

Just a few days before August rolled into September, the announcements were made. Over the radio, on television, and in social media, we were all reminded that schools are opening soon, students will fill our streets and that all vehicles must slow down when traveling through “school zones”. If a driver did not stay within the posted speed limit, the consequences could be quite costly, not only in excessive financial fines, but also in unnecessary loss of life.

The following lyrics of that song sung by Simon & Garfunkel contain some good advice: Slow down, you move too fast. Often our busy schedules cause us to move so fast, that we miss what is important. In Psalm 46, we read the following: “Be still and know that I am God!” Knowing our God by listening to His voice, will always influence our direction in life and the pace we set to get there. May we always be willing to leave our “comfort” zone, so that we will always be in God’s zone, which is always a school zone of learning and construction, leading to greater life.

It is interesting to note the definition of the word “Godspeed”. This word is often used when someone is setting out on a journey. To wish “Godspeed”, means wishing those involved much success. Considering what was said above, one could say that when we travel in God’s zone, we are guided by God’s speed, which will always result in “Godspeed”.

Next Sunday, September 15, is a very special day in the life of a parish, our Praznyk. On this day, we honour the patron of our parish, St. Joseph. On this day, we give thanks to God for all His blessings that has been given to our community of faith. Also on this day we pray for all the needs of our parish and ask to continue to guide us into the future. Our Praznyk Divine Liturgy will begin at 10:00 am. Our Metropolitan, Archbishop Lawrence Huculak, OSBM will be the main celebrant. Please plan to come next Sunday for the Divine Liturgy, and also for the meal that is to follow.

Peace & Prayers, Fr. Dmytro Христос посеред нас! Christ is among us!

The Redemptorists and parishioners of St. Joseph’s extend a warm welcome to all our guests. Thank you for worshipping with us today.

“Our universe is not made up only of beautiful trees, but also of stunted ones. Yet each tree is important. Television shows us movie stars, men and women with beautiful bodies and extravagant clothes. But that is not the reality of the majority of people! The beauty of human beings lies in their capacity to accept who they are, just as they are; not to live in a world of dreams or illusions, in anger or despair, wanting to be other than they are, or trying to run away from reality.” ~Jean Vanier Nativity of the Mother of God September 8 "Your Nativity, O Mother of God, has made joy known to the entire world, for from you, dawned the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. He abolished the curse and gave the blessing, and by making death of no effect, He bestowed on us eternal life." On this day, our Church acknowledges the birth of the Theotokos (Mother of God). As the Church's Liturgical Year begins on September 1st, it is only fitting that the Nativity of Mary, the Mother of God, be celebrated as the first major feast of the year. The birth of the Theotokos is the beginning of the act of incarnation and our salvation through Jesus Christ. The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible. According to the apocryphal writings which are not a part of the New Testament Scriptures, Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were old and childless. Their inability to have children caused them intense grief and considerable embarrassment. In Jewish tradition, barrenness was viewed as a curse because it meant the woman was unable to produce a possible Messiah for the people. Joachim and Anna prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child, vowing to dedicate their child to the service of the Lord if He found favor with their request. In answer to their unwavering fidelity to God, the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined to become the Mother of the Messiah, Christ. The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the change of the times when the great and comforting promises of God for the salvation of the human race from slavery to the devil are about to be fulfilled. This event has brought to earth the grace of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of Truth, piety, virtue and everlasting life. The Theotokos is revealed to all of us by grace as a merciful Intercessor and Mother. As the morning star announces the approaching sunrise, so also Mary’s birth heralded the coming of the “Sun of Justice,” the promised Messiah, who was to destroy the power of Satan, reopen for us the gates of heaven, and assure divine blessing to the entire human race. This is the reason of our rejoicing. At the same time, the liturgical hymns exalt devotion and righteousness of Joachim and Anna, who by their “devout life have brought good fortune to all of us.” By their devotion and persevering prayers, they proved their complete confidence in God. And it paid off, since they were blessed by a God-given child, the Theotokos as Mary is referred to in the liturgical hymns. This is the practical lesson of the feast of Mary’s nativity. Our unwavering confidence in God, supported by persevering prayer, will open for us the door of divine mercy and secure for us a constant flow of God’s blessings. In our daily struggles, we must never give up. We must, as Abraham did, even “against hope believe in hope” (Rom. 14:18) trusting Almighty God.
