TUULI LAPPALAINEN, PhD, AND JOE PICKRELL, PhD, JOIN THE NEW YORK GENOME CENTER FACULTY AS JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS AND CORE MEMBERS

New York, NY (March 7, 2014) – The New York Genome Center (NYGC) announced that Tuuli Lappalainen, PhD and Joe Pickrell, PhD, have joined the organization as Junior Investigators and Core Members.

Lappalainen holds a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Biology at . Her work links computational and population to experimental molecular biology, with the aim of understanding how genetic variation in humans contributes to traits and diseases.

Lappalainen received her PhD in Genetics from University of Helsinki, Finland in 2009, followed by postdoctoral research at University of Geneva, Switzerland and Stanford University. She has made important contributions to several international research consortia in human genomics, including the 1000 Genomes Project and the Genotype Tissue Expression Project, and led the RNA-sequencing work of the Geuvadis Consortium.

“Tuuli Lappalainen’s extensive work as a collaborative and integrative scientist in the analysis of regulatory variants in large datasets will expand NYGC’s leadership and development in advanced genetic research,” said Robert B. Darnell, NYGC’s President, CEO and Scientific Director. “Joe Pickrell brings a deep understanding of genomics and the statistical tools needed to transform basic and clinical genetics at NYGC.”!

Pickrell, an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University, is focused on developing computational and statistical tools to transform large-scale genomic data to better understand human biology.

Prior to joining the New York Genome Center, Pickrell was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard Medical School. He holds a PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Chicago and a BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
