The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance is having a big year — not only is it appealing for funding assistance to replace the Bell222B helicop- ter, it has just launched its biennial FRIENDS appeal. All the funds generated from the FRIENDS appeal go directly towards the oper- ational costs of maintaining a dedicated emergency air ambulance and rescue service for the region and ensuring the service is available at no cost to the patient. Grant Bremner, Chief Pilot, says the service has touched the lives of many families in the region. ‘‘In 2010 we assisted 357 people involved in a variety of emergency situations — from car accidents, to lost trampers to mothers in labour — and the fast response of the rescue helicopter bringing medical or rescue assistance can make the difference of life or death for many of them.’’ TC190711SP11A, B Over the next few weeks PRIME MINISTER John Key speaking at the function where he presented a cheque for $73,434.13 representatives of the Westpac for the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance (below, in action) on behalf of the Ministry of Health to Waikato Air Ambulance are Phillips Search and Rescue Trust. going to be calling people in the southern Waikato and King Country regions to rally support by way of donations and to offer the added benefits of becoming a FRIEND of the Rescue Helicopter. Tickets are $100 plus GST per head, which includes a seated dinner and a $35 ticket to the Red Premium seating zone to watch the game. The dairy theme will remain obvious through- out the game, with all on-field entertainment focusing on the industry and interactive informa- tion also on display showcasing the latest rural products and services — all of this at no extra cost to the rugby public. LIC general manager sales & marketing, Grant Lonergan says the farmer owned co-op has always been a strong supporter of both Waikato and Taranaki rugby and sponsors each team’s mascot at the games. ‘‘Dairy farming is big business in these two areas of the North Island, and so is rugby. ‘‘Many of the fans are our customers, and many of the players come from a dairy farming back- ground so it’s fitting that we support the sport and are proud to be associated with this week’s dairy themed game.’’ For more information about ‘Two Knights in One’ contact [email protected] or call 07 839 5675. BY COLIN THORSEN

An emotional Wayne Taitoko has joined his grandfather Tom Maniapoto on the honours board at ASB Te Awamutu Golf Club. The sweet swinging Taitoko nailed a whopping 12 metre birdie putt on the par four 18th to win the senior 72-hole strokeplay title by one shot from defending champion Matthew Schofield. ‘‘It’s a fairytale story really,’’ says Taitoko. ‘‘My grandfather Tom Maniapoto won the senior matchplay championship in 1966, and he taught me how to play the game as a seven-year-old at Te Awamutu course. ‘‘Tom offered me many words of wisdom as a youngster taking up the sport, but the one that has always stuck with me is to always ‘hate golf with a passion’.’’ Taitoko says he is stoked to have finally broken through for his first championship win at Te Awamutu, despite taking 48 years. Trailing Schofield by three shots going into the fourth and final round, Taitoko had no idea that a birdie was required on the last hole to clinch the championship. ‘‘It wasn’t until I made my way into the clubhouse that the enormity of that final putt became apparent. ‘‘Had I missed it, Matthew (Schofield) and I would have been involved in a sudden death playoff and neither of us would have wanted that — the weather conditions were terrible.’’ Taitoko finished with a best three out of four TC190711SP18 rounds total of 227 (74, 77, 76), Schofield 228 (74, 74, 80) DAVID SMITH running for Waikato/BOP at Porritt and Bryce McDougall 229 (80, 74, 75).
