There are many excellent bird books and identification field gu ides, including the Department of En vironment and Conservation's 'Bush Book' series to assist in distinguishing one bird from another. Voluntee rs with the departmen;'s LANDSCOPE Expeditions indicated a need for a State checklist to record their bird sightings. Avid bird wa tche rs and beginners alike will find this list easy to use. This checklist of Western Australian birds does not include rare vagrants. In this edition of Book that Bird! we have adopted the .Christidis and Boles (2008) classification to provide un iformity with 'Birds Australia' who are also using this list. For a complete list of birds recorded for Austra lia, readers should consult Systematics and Taxonomy of Australian Birds by Les Christidis and Walter Boles published in 2008 by CSIRO Publishing (www.publish.csiro.au/pid/5702.htm). In our list, naturalised species are indicated by an asterisk(*). It should be noted that the Rainbow Lorikeet, although introduced in the south-west of the State, is native to the Kimberley. This list will help you to maintain a record of birds observed, not only from your backyard, but from the many and va ried habitats in the subu rbs, southern forests, Goldfields, deserts, Pil bara and Kimberle y.
