During my course, I did many new activities that I really enjoyed. For example a reflective journal, where I wrote what I learnt that day. We also made a magazine, using different ways of communication like wiki, and we utilised a virtual platform with many resources for information. I gained a lot of new knowledge. Another important experience for me was facing the challenge of studying something in another language, in another country and understand everything, whilst making lots of friends.

I really wanted to study veterinary nursing in WA, and wanted training with a face-to-face classroom component. South Metropolitan TAFE offered a program with classroom learning, an on-site training clinic, an on-site surgery, and additional learning at a work placement in Perth. The class sizes are small and the team atmosphere is great, which creates a supportive environment for learning. Having the clinic and surgery training helped break up the , and helped make the transition of learning from the book to the patients. The teaching staff were all highly educated, and have a passion for both veterinary medicine, and teaching and made sure to push us to do our best. Building and construction is one of the largest industries in the world, with billions of dollars invested in infrastructure and housing every year. TAFE has a number of courses that you can study, which will get you started in this ever-growing and fast- moving industry.

I graduated in Architecture a while before coming to Australia, but I wasn’t really happy with my career in Brazil. I decided to study Residential Building Drafting, to learn and understand Australian construction methods, regulations, building codes, and therefore, help me enter the architecture market. The course was different from Uni, but it’s great for its purpose. I have learnt a lot this year, and I’m happy I chose TAFE. It’s a hands-on course, where we learn exactly what the industry needs. I had great lecturers as well, who were extremely important for my learning. Flavia Godoy Azevedo | Brazil 52757WA Certificate IV in Residential Building Drafting

When I came to Australia to live I didn’t have strong English skills so I couldn’t speak well and I couldn’t understand anyone. I worked in a café as a barista. I watched the chef in the kitchen and he was happy to show me how a kitchen worked. It was from then that I really found my love for the kitchen. I was reminded of memories seeing my mum cooking when I was little and then when I saw that chef with all his passion for cooking and it was when I decide to start a course in commercial cookery. Western Australia has the most amazing plants in the world. This made it much easier to study here. The training course helped me to apply for volunteer jobs and casual jobs while I was studying. Luckily I got a job in a company that builds nature playgrounds for children. This was the philosophy that I was looking for, helping reconnect kids with nature. I think kids are the future of a more sustainable world, which is what we need now. I think the practical classes and all the lecturers were amazing. They really helped us to see what the market and industry were asking for, which made an easier pathway to find a job.

It was difficult for me to apply directly to university so I decided to study at a TAFE college first and take a pathway to university. The reason for doing so is not only because it was an easier pathway but also because TAFE Western Australian colleges are government owned and I believe that the lecturers are highly qualified educators. Learning software development was very challenging for me because I had never studied it before in my home country. However when I tried it, it turned out that it was very easy to follow even thought I was new to that course. I really liked this course because the lecturer was very friendly, easy to communicate with and always helped answer my questions. This course has also given me many practical experiences that have helped to build skills and also improve my English ability.

I love living in Perth as there is so much to enjoy both in the city area and in the outdoors. The beaches in Perth are the best I have ever seen, it is very clean and make it feel like I’m living in a paradise. Also I feel great to live in such a multicultural city and it has allowed me to learn a lot more about Australian culture as well as other cultures from around the world.
