Foreword EHF President

Dear handball friends,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back for the resumption of this exciting first season of EHF European League Men. Since the competition’s last action, the handball elite have been starring at the World Championship in Egypt and those on duty for their national teams now return to focus on Europe’s second tier competition.

The displays in Egypt once again reminded us just how strong European teams are on the world stage and my congratulations go to champions Denmark on securing back-to-back titles.

So far, this first season of the EHF European League has lived up to its billing as one of the most exciting competitions in the world with tough, intense and energetic action on the court featuring an eclectic mix of teams. It has resulted in some fascinating matches and four groups which have seen their fair share of thrilling performances and results.

With the top four clubs in each group progressing to the Last 16, the second half of the season looks set to continue in the same vein as the teams aim to make it through the competitive group phase.

In group A, all eyes have been on Orlen Wisła Płock, who have dominated from the very first match and who currently sit pretty at the top having won all their four matches.

Group B is perhaps the hardest to call right now, with IKF Kristianstad leading the way at the restart of the competition on eight points, one point clear of Füchse Berlin. The German side have happy recent memories of the Europe’s second tier competition having lifted the EHF Cup title in 2015 and 2018. However, with USAM Nimes Gard, Sporting CP and C.S. Dinamo Bucuresti also in with serious chances of progressing, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Montpellier HB have begun group C in fine style, winning all four of their matches to sit on top, but with SC Magdeburg also on eight points and HC CSKA on six points, the identity of which teams will advance still remains in the balance.

Rhein-Neckar Löwen return to action aiming to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition with the Germans sitting top of group D on goal difference ahead of a GOG side who had four players win gold at the World Championship in Egypt.

Of course, in these times of Covid-19, we have made it paramount that the safety of teams competing in this season’s EHF European League is of the utmost importance. With the implementation of our detailed hygiene concept we have been able to see the world’s best players back in the action and we will continue to do our best to keep the environment safe for every team.

Hopefully in the not-too-distant future we will be able to welcome fans back to the arenas – but until then, stay safe, enjoy the handball and the best of luck to all teams involved.
