Until I entered college, my brother and I would spend every other weekend with our father. He would take us fishing, play catch, teach us how to change our own tires, how to check our oil; all of those typical Dad things. On Sundays though, he'd turn into Mr. Mom and spend the bet- ter part of a lazy afternoon in the kitchen, while my brother and I did our homework in the din- ing room or in our bedrooms. He would somehow whip up the greatest meals for us, comparable only to Mom's. Even th'ough our step-mom was always there, he insisted on doing his thing. . LITERARY I February 15,2007 I THE OBSERVER fordhamobserver.com WATER By ELIZABETH FOREST CONTRIBUTING WRITER I held his voice together in my hands. But like water, I could not catch it. My fingers, whittled to bone for winter wilder, standing dumb, went to sleep and then he broke!

So these are tears. All this long, I thoughtthat you were one from water. And where I found my eyes drought, I went to the river and when the river would not see me, would not give its body to the faucet, I ran into the sea and the sea left only stains, but far from me, and not my own.

In my dreams, I woke, lying in a pool of warm water, drifting. I found my face kissed with falling marigolds and balanced one for a moment on my eyelash, everything at rest. And I was in tears that could not break the surface to let the joy out, mystified, only the delicate chime of the ripples awake, sing- ing. The wind took its fingers, caught them on my naked limbs, left them for a moment in thought, swept them up again, just along the tips of my breasts, my chin, my eyelids, my forehead. But the rain came down just then, violent and cold, and I swam.into the water, down far down, to the warmth and somehow the Cold could follow, and I felt every drop deny law, fall forward, like bullets until the water fell away that it was again only just kissing the underneath. The water then, turned cold and the bullets scalding hot, and from the mud people rose and carried giant banana leaves above their heads. The leaves protected them until they shriveled up into dark fuchsia petals, curling and dry in the wetness, falling down into the earth, draining away. I ran to the soil, dug after them. Then I fell in, and woke up. I smelt the rain, but not jungle rain, city rain. Turning around I saw a jungle through the tall windows and I thought the glass would protect me but I became a jungle anyway. 10-point Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk (TI) Condensed outline .goes right herey, with some more information added herey axyxyxyxyxyxy
