Special thanks to Mike Levert and Hunter Riddle for leading the charge with this event! Mike skippered our 2nd Place Finish in Race One. We only lost to the World Champions! Check out our Facebook page to watch live videos from the event. Mark your calendars for next Labor Day! We will have a “destination raft up” at for the 100-Year Anniversary of the Lipton Cup and the re-enactment of the very first Lipton. We will look into setting up boats on which we can watch the races! This year we received 6th Place in the Lipton. We have a year to climb to the top! Go PYC! • Capdevielle Regatta: Huge thanks to our PYC Capdevielle Team for spending Labor Day representing and supporting PYC. It has been a long time since we have had such support and participation in the Capdevielle. For you non-sailors, Capdevielle events are those in which the in the Gulf Yachting Association member clubs (numbering 36), race against each other in one-design boats. Currently, PYC races the Viper, which was the third boat ever sailed in the Capdevielle. The first boat was theFish Class boat, sailed in 1920. (See Fleet Captain Report p. 10) • Navy Challenge Cup: PYC also competed in a variety of boat classes in the Navy Yacht Club’s Navy Cup. This year, and I stress “this year,” we lost by 14 points. Year 2020 will be our year!

September also brought the beginning of our Year-Round Sailing Program led by PYC Sailing Director César Travado. We are so excited for the program as we continue to acquire junior sailors. This year’s Summer Sailing Program grossed more than $70,000 - a record! It keeps getting better and better! Entertainment Labor Day provided beautiful weather for PYC! (No hurricane, no tropical storm!) We had both young and “senior” members sliding down water slides and enjoying a free buffet. There was no labor involved - only fun! As always, PYC offers events and activities for everyone: movies in the pool, regattas, music events, and much, much more! The Ladies Dinner Dance (also known as Casino Night) is coming soon! It will be on Friday, October 18th. We thank our sponsors, as well as those members who have donated items for our Silent Auction. Our members are so generous! Ladies, this is your opportunity to shop! A little “retail therapy” goes a long way. It is a black tie affair with cocktail attire suggested for the ladies; however, I will be wearing floor length. Can’t wait to see you all there! I leave you with this. Your Board Directors have logged hundreds of hours of their time to benefit our Club. I can’t say how thankful I am for them! Sunshine and salt. . . PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith The repairs to the erosion problem at the East Marina have been repaired by Dale’s Marine Construction.

The repairs that were accomplished should prevent any further erosion damage from storms to that area of the marina. The repair to the area between the crane and bulkhead has not yet been performed. Since this is a repair, not a modification, no permitting is required. General Manager Jim Warwick is in the process of contacting concrete companies to get estimates on breaking up the old, sagging concrete decking, installing a new mesh sand filter to prevent further erosion (which caused the sagging concrete decking in the first place) and placing a new concrete deck. Hopefully this will be accomplished very soon. New Race Committee Boat “Persistence” Update: We can finally see “the light at the end of the tunnel”! The new anti-fouling paint has been applied, small repair to the keel accomplished, new steering ram installed, all batteries replaced, small repair the to electrical panel done, all safety equipment now up to Coast Guard regulations, trim tabs repaired and the repair to the upper deck fiberglass delamination is well along. Our projected date-of-delivery to our marina is Friday, September 27th. Hopefully by the time you read this, the boat will be both in our marina and in service!

Rear Commodore’s Comments Tom Pace “Reminders” I need a reminder. Ok, maybe a couple of reminders. Aw, who am I trying to trick here? I need LOTS of reminders - not to forget certain bills, meetings, or garbage pickup. And, I ALWAYS need the reminder to get my Jib Sheet article finished by deadline! But sometimes, the reminders can be about some really neat things within PYC, and that is the point of this article. What could be so neat within PYC and this JIB SHEET that would serve as a reminder of some neat things? LOTS, and the fact that some of our members lose sight of even a bit of all that’s going on inspires me to start right now to get to reminding! Specifically, I want to remind everyone that we are still capped out at the largest number of members in PYC history. That particular group, out of all of us, represents an amazing amount of funding for our operating costs, a vibrant collection of personalities, and the potential to move PYC into levels of performance never seen in the Club’s 111-year history. Next, I remind all of us - myself especially - that, as such a well and frequently attended Club, we have opportunities every week: • To welcome members and guests into a new conversation, • To enjoy an evening on the deck or out at the pool, • To engage others and spread the word about whatever interests we are exploring within PYC, such as sailing locally, learning to race, participating in local and far away events, taking part in any of our Club functions, or joining onto any of the existing PYC committees that are pivotal to the Club’s success, • To be proud that we have a full and rich history of great sailors and racers, with the newest and brightest of today being an 11-year-old kid, GIL HACKEL, the recently crowned 2019 US National Champion. • Be aware that, among all of our members, PYC has an amazing level of consistency and continuity among our critical positions. Deon and Jennifer have each been employees of PYC for 20 years, and several staff members have been here 17-18 years. Our long range financial team - Treasurer Tim Kane, Managers Jim Warwick, Scott Segers, John Redfield, and Chef Artie Gless - have each and collectively, for years, driven and shaped the success that we enjoy today … and that effort continues! • To celebrate that, socially, we are continuing to develop entertainment ideas for the benefit of the members … benefits that include maintaining traditional events for PYC, such as the Ladies Dinner Dance. We are also aggressively open to evaluating every idea so that what we choose benefits the members, first and foremost, And, most importantly - • To know that, as a Club, PYC is performing at levels we never have before, and it will take diligence, great management, and participation from members for this level-of-performance to continue. PYC encourages every idea, thought, or question - even if such opposes the common agenda. This is OUR Pensacola Yacht Club, and it is up to us to remind ourselves just that! Our future is bright, so let’s keep that goal in front of us as the big reminder to move forward for the betterment of the Club and all of our members.

Ship’s Log Dave Hoffman When it comes to boys and their toys, bigger is always better. The October display from the PYC archives exhibits two photos of grand yachts once owned by Club members. Can you picture a private yacht tied up alongside the T-dock that would take up the entire pier? Now imagine, in the 1950s, two powerboats over 100 feet long on the PYC list of owner’s yachts! I have attached photos of these two yachts. The stories of John C. Pace’s 118 feet Defoe Cruisemaster “Chanticleer” are many and entertaining. Stop by the Roundtable to get details from the Pace family of Chanticleer’s prominent place in PYC history. After the end of WWII there were many military boats to be purchased at attractive prices. Colonel J. McHenry Jones converted a 104 feet USAF Air-Sea Rescue vessel into an incredible yacht named “Sea Lark” for the purpose of entertaining his guests. For more information, please stop by the Archive Exhibit across from the lobby stairs.

PAGE 9 | JIB SHEET MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

David and Louisette Woodward have been members of Pensacola Yacht Club for about a year-and-a-half. They moved to Pensacola in 1998 from Dallas. Louisette grew up in Montreal and David in DeFuniak Springs; however, since their marriage they have lived in Tampa, London, and Dallas, but intend to hang around for a while.

Louisette has a successful custom closet company, Advanced Space Concepts, and has been in the industry for over 20 years. She not only designs space in new and existing structures, but she also monitors the on-going process from beginning to end. She sits on the Club’s Hospitality Committee.

David is a practicing lawyer who primarily does commercial and real property-related work as well as financial distress.

Louisette and David enjoy music, traveling, reading and very good food - a good thing because Louisette enjoys cooking! They are parishioners at Christ Church and David is a Sub-West Rotarian - which meets here at the Club.

PAGE 11 | JIB SHEET Fleet Captain’s Report Hal Smith Premiere Sailing League is coming to Pensacola! PSL’s first regatta in the USA will be here January 3-5, 2020.

What is Premiere Sailing League? Glad you asked. Premiere Sailing League (PSL) is an organization offering “Pay as you Play” racing. PSL is partnering with cities and yacht clubs to host a series of annual regattas in which yacht club teams may compete but have no ownership responsibilities for the themselves. Does PSL provide anything unique besides no boat ownership? Good question. Yes. Much more. The regattas will be held as a “stadium” event close to shore so that spectators on land can watch and enjoy the action. To avoid long tedious races with limited viewing excitement, races will be short 10- 15 minutes long with 4 quick legs including crowded mark roundings and finishes. There will be lots of compact action. The objective is to have as many as 20 races in a day.

RS Sailing’s RS 21 (6-boat fleet) MarkSetBot remote-controlled buoys that can be set & retrieved by GPS Is this a brand-new idea? No. League sailing has been a huge success all over for many years. PSL is modeling the organization here after what has been so much fun with terrific participation in Europe. Is PYC involved? Yes. We are privileged to be the first partner along with the City of Pensacola to help PSL launch this next big thing in sailboat racing in the US. The City is excited and eager to support. Pensacola has two perfect downtown venues with Maritime Park and Plaza de Luna as great places to watch while spectators can enjoy other land-based events, such as festivals, wine tastings, craft fairs, etc. We will host some of the social and party festivities at PYC while others will be at commercial establishments downtown. What is the City of Pensacola doing? The City will help with temporary dockage, coordinate with other events, provide tents as needed, arrange for food vendors and beverage vendors to be on-site, and to help find lodging and other entertainment for family and friends of our guest competitors..

Wahoo Maritime Park is one of two Pensacola venues PSL representatives meet with Pensacola Mayor Grover for PSL stadium racing. Robinson, Fleet Captain Hal Smith & Talbot Wilson Is anything else special? Of course! America’s Cup Announcer, Tucker Thompson, will be on site and will announce the action for the spectators who are watching. There will be a few adjustments to the regular rules of racing to make watching more understandable for the spectators who do not know the standard procedures and more fun for the competitors. This will be a simple version of the stadium viewing during the recent America’s Cup regattas. Expect to see lots of national sailing media here to cover the events.

What will this cost PYC? This should only be fun and exciting with expanded opportunities and the potential to earn some shared revenue in the future, as well as being very entertaining. PSL will start with 6 boats, RS21’s which are similar to our RS Ventures but larger. PSL will store the boats at PYC during the winter racing season with Pensacola being the southern headquarters. When the PSL boats are not being used for their regattas (which is most of the time) the boats will be available for PYC use. The target is to grow interest to require 12 boats to be here. PSL is providing the boats and maintaining them. PAGE 12 | JIB SHEET Will we have to provide our normal RC crew for each regatta? No. This is part of what is so exciting about the PSL plan. This is the future of sailboat racing, and it is starting here. Marks will be GPS controlled and electric motor powered to set themselves and adjust as necessary. A lot of modern technology is being introduced to minimize the need for people. There will be on-the-water umpiring partly performed by the same person who starts and finishes the races (3-minute sequence) so that only 3-4 RC personnel are needed totally. Can I get involved? There will be minimal shore-side for Race Committee personnel needs, as just mentioned, but we will want to have one of the best sailing teams. Watch for announcements. We are writing the rules now. The formal announcement will be made at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. This will bring a lot of fun and enormous national prestige with minimal effort by PYC. See article entitled “Premiere Sailing League Exhibition Series Coming to Pensacola in 2020,” Pensacola News Journal, Sept. 23, 2019 FISH CLASS FLEET CONTINUES TO PRACTICE: Watch them every Thursday evening. The Fish Boats are tuning against each other as preparation begins to win the Centennial Lipton Cup, thus repeating the results of the first Lipton Cup. Thank them and encourage their efforts when you see them. They are Neil McMillan, DJ Johnson, and Tom Pace. Fish Boats are beautiful under sail. THURSDAY EVENING RACING CONCLUDED FOR 2019! This was a lot of fun, and too few members participated this year. Summer sailing on Pensacola Bay is really special. The water is warm, and the sun stays out long enough to enjoy a couple hours of sailing in perfect breezes. We met on our beach with launchable boats, and we sailed around the channel markers. Mid-summer, the Fish Class boats started coming out to tune for the 2020 season and especially the GYA Centennial Liptons next Labor Day. Afterwards, we enjoyed hamburgers and beer/soda for only $0.00/ person. That is not a mistake! The food was FREE for those who sailed and helped. Thanks to PYC Secretary Steven Orr for donating the food for us. JOIN THE RACE COMMITTEE FUN! A few great special regattas are still coming up in 2019 making this one of our best years ever. Plans for next year are even better. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” The sooner you get involved, the better the experience you gain towards qualifying you for some of next year’s big events. Contact our Race Committee chairman, Bob Madden: [email protected], and he will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you. ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAIL Our new RS Ventures are rigged and ready to go. They are fantastic boats for adults learning to sail. They are fun, responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for sailing (C420’s, Lasers, , windsurfing) as well as larger such as Satori’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind.” If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary. 2019 OFFSHORE RACE/RENDEZVOUS REGATTA PYC will host a domestic offshore race/rally to start November 1 From Pensacola YC to St. Petersburg YC. There will be both monohull and multihull sailboat fleets. Within each fleet, there will be a racing and a cruising division determined by the number of registrations. In addition, there will be a “Predicted Log Event” for power boats. Power Boaters, this is your chance to participate in the special fun and adventure enjoyed by the sailors who annually migrate to foreign shores. This time there is no need for getting out your passports, getting visas, or registering with the US Coast Guard. The legal work is much simpler when going to another domestic port. Members are even encouraged to drive to the gathering party in St. Pete, which is something not possible in Cuba or Isla Mujeres. Watch for an NOR to be posted soon on our PYC website. For more information, contact: Offshore Regatta Chairmen DJ Johnson and Mike Patterson. LABOR DAY - WITHOUT THE “LABOR”

PAGE 14 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler The September raft up at Fort McRee was one of the best raft ups this year! It was well attended with 18 PYC boats in the anchorage and almost 50 people on the beach for dinner. There was a brisk 15-knot breeze blowing from the east on Saturday morning giving the sailboats a delightful downwind sail. The afternoon was spent lounging, visiting, and exchanging sea stories. Ft. McRee was much less crowded than it had been all summer because football season has started and most of the day-trippers stay home to watch football. We had more room to anchor and we managed to claim our favorite spot on the beach for our “camp.” Saturday evening we met on the beach for PYC’s delicious southern fried chicken and more pot-luck side dishes than you could count. We celebrated birthdays for Vice Commodore Johnny Smith, Past Commodore Ron Bruce, Patti Thomas, and Innes Richards. The celebration included birthday cake and a boisterous rendition of “Happy Birthday.” No offense, but my recommendation is that most of us keep our day jobs. We might have a tough time in the recording industry. We watched a beautiful sunset followed by an even more beautiful moonrise. The full harvest moon was Friday night but Saturday’s moon did not disappoint. Saturday night was a quiet night in the anchorage and all the boats behaved themselves. Over 40 people enjoyed our Sunday Morning Brunch. The wonderful northeasterly breeze and light cloud cover made for a very comfortable morning on the beach. Many thanks to VC Johnny & Ruth and P/C Ron & Joanne for stepping in to host this raft up when the original host was called out of town. Y’all did a great job! Next raft up is scheduled for October 5-6 at Pirate’s Cove. This is in conjunction with Point Yacht Club’s Lost Bay Regatta and is always a ton of fun. It’s one of the few times the cruisers and the racers are in the same place for the weekend. Janet & Neil Davies are hosts for this raft up. Details for the weekend will be out soon, so watch your email and Face Book. See you there.

Many of our Juniors competed as many adults enjoyed the waters off PYC’s beach. It was a beautiful day of play!

GIL & “TEAM HACKEL” CONTINUE TO DOMINATE In addition to winning the individual 2019 Optimist Dinghy National Championship recently (as previously reported), Gil Hackel’s team won the 2019 Optimist Dinghy Team Championship without losing a race! That is an incredible accomplishment!

PAGE 17 | JIB SHEET Do You Ride? Bob Kriegel Several PYC members did a great North Georgia trip the week of September 8th, staying at a “mini mansion” located six miles north of Dahlonega, at a spectacular mountaintop retreat. Iven & Jenny Streckel, Alan & Gloria McMillan, and Dave Norfleet & Barbara Wade drove with their bikes in tow; and Gloria’s brother, Tim Quinn, sister Carla and husband Chris Shrimpton joined them there. Iven, Jenny, Alan, Barb & Dave rode about 112 miles on Monday to the Tallulah Gorge and hiked the suspension bridge. The hike down was easy, but the roughly 400 steps back up to the top just about killed us! Lunch and a cold beer in Helen, GA got us back to Rice Ridge. Meanwhile, Gloria and the non-bikers hiked about 10 miles on the Appalachian Trail. Everyone slept very well that first night! On Tuesday, Marco & Tommy Stolfi joined the crowd in their spectacular RV, and the crowd did more mountain-motorcycling during the day. Steve Harp, Bob Kriegel, Mike McCord, Jim Oyler, & Bob Sutton left Pensacola by bike Tuesday morning and joined the group later in the day, staying at a great cottage at the R Ranch. Tuesday’s highlight was the “drop the bike contest.” The competition was intense; – and included fence careening and unidirectional maneuvering without regard to the road! Marco was judged the unanimous winner with two drops within one hour. He demonstrated his skills again Wednesday morning with his camp-cooked breakfast for the cottage group – biscuits and gravy, thick cut bacon and patty sausage, eggs to order. Wednesday was a highlight-riding day, with about 105 mountain miles. The bikers did the “Georgia ” and rode “The Gauntlet,” had lunch in Helen, and rode to the top of “Brasstown Bald,” Georgia’s highest peak at just under 5,000 feet elevation. The non- bikers hiked and shopped. Marco cooked a feast of Cornish hens for dinner, and was ordained King Chef Extraordinaire. The “hardcore” PYC riders left on Thursday for their long and HOT ride home; Bob Kriegel opted to motorcycle up to Virginia for a disappointing FSU football game. The remainder did their last mountain day, riders on bikes and hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Friday night saw most everyone at the PYC bar, doing what they really do best---having a beer with friends, recounting a great week of motorcycling in the North Georgia Mountains, and making plans for next year. (See schedule below) Don’t forget about the next group ride to the Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally October 25th-26th. It is a great alternative (or companion) to the Daytona Bike Week. P/C Alan McMillan is the ride coordinator. He has a few motel rooms reserved, and they will go quickly. Sign up, and give him a call for a room before he lets them go!

And, life is good! “Sons of Sailors” highlights the versatility of interests and talents of our PYC members. This group is composed of PYC’s most avid racers, cruisers, Satori leaders/captains, and several Past Commodores. While constantly engaging in boating events, these well-rounded sailors/bikers always manage to enjoy life. All PYC members who ride are welcome to join. Yacht clubs are wonderful organizations and most are proud to offer a variety of experiences to their members. Some have book clubs, golf teams, tennis teams, and a plethora of other opportunities . . . but our “Sons of Sailors” group is the most original! Life is great at PYC!
