From the Pastor • Del Pastor

Dear Friends of St. Louise,

Hey, do you remember? We are still in the Year of the Word of God – the year that Francis proclaimed on January 26, the third Sunday in Ordinary Time of this year, through the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time of our next liturgical year, January 24, 2021. hopes that on every Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will focus on the importance of the Word of God. Etienne has also named this year, beginning with the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ on June 14, 2020, a Year of the Eucharist for the Archdiocese of Seattle. These special years give us lots of opportunity to grow in our faith on both topics! Here are some thoughts for this month on the Year of the Word of God, and next week I will say a little more about the Year of the Eucharist.

Why did Pope Francis choose 2020 in which to proclaim a Year of the Word of God? This year is the 1,600th anniversary of the death of St. Jerome, who translated the Bible from the various languages in which it was written into one language, Latin (his translation was known as the , from editio vulgate, meaning “common version”). The Church affirmed the Vulgate as its official Latin Bible at the (1545–1563), adopted the Clementine edition of the Vulgate of 1592 as the standard Bible text of the of the , and promulgated its replacement, the , in 1979. This year, 2020, is also the 10th anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation, Verbum Dei (The Word of God). You can easily find that document by typing in Verbum Dei in most search engines. I highly recommend that you take time to read it.

How are you doing on our parish goal to read the Bible every day, even if it’s just one verse? If you are not sure where to start, try the Gospel of Matthew, which is the Gospel we are reading for most of the Sundays of this liturgical year. A handy place to find the daily readings is this page from the USCCB website: USCCB.org/bible. You could pray over the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday and be better prepared to hear and receive the word of God at Mass, either online or in person. That way you will “kill two birds with one stone” by reading the Gospel for the Year of the Word of God and preparing for Sunday Mass. As I mentioned before in this column, in the celebration of Mass, the table of the Word of God leads us to the table of the Eucharist.

In the Catholic world, the entry point for living the word of God is prayer, and especially the liturgy. For each individual, that could be the Liturgy of the Hours or the celebration of the Mass or even that person’s private prayer. (If you are unfamiliar with the Liturgy of the Hours, Google will turn up lots of helpful information, or you could watch Seminarian Brody’s video about it on our parish website.) After praying over the Word of God with Christ and his Church each day, we then seek to reach a better understanding of what the Word of God has to teach each of us that day.

Blessing to all of you during these summer days!

Fr. Gary Zender

Virtual Retreat—Divine Mercy In the Second Greatest Story Ever Told

A Virtual Retreat with Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, is director of Evangelization for the Marian Fathers of the and director of For- mation for the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy.

In partnership with the Augustine Institute, Fr. Gaitley has produced a beautiful 10-part series, titled “Divine Mercy: In The Second Greatest Story Ever Told,” tracing God's story of mercy across the ages.

The series tells the dramatic history of God's love and mercy as interwoven through the transformative message of St. Faustina, the miraculous appearance of Mary at Fatima, the witness of Maximilian Kolbe, and the world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul II. Featuring the brilliant cinematic artistry of the Augstine Institute's film studio, the vast panorama of God's work of mercy in the world unfolds as a story to be experienced.

The Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center is excited to transform this high-quality series into a virtual retreat. The retreat will be free to anyone with access to FORMED through their parish (St. Louise has this). If your parish does not have a FORMED subscription, then you can register for an individual subscription on Formed.org for $9.99 and you'll have access not only to this retreat, but to hundreds of other high quality Catholic digital resources.

Register on our website and we will send you an example retreat schedule that you can follow or make your own, a study guide with reflection questions for each presentation, and links to all of the videos.
