Orientation: Orientation will be provided on the FIRST WORKING DAY OF THE ROTATION. This will begin at 0800 in the 4D Conference Room on the Childbirth Unit, 4th floor. This will include a review of the on-call and office schedules information regarding opportunities available in the Childbirth Program at Grand River, information about the program and a tour of the Childbirth Unit.

On-call and Office Schedules: The assigned 24-hour (0800-0800) on-call schedule will be emailed to you two weeks prior to the start of your rotation. If you have not received it, please email Gwyneth Jalbert: [email protected] Five to seven call shifts will be scheduled for each resident. (This number depends on the length of the rotation and the number of residents each month). Any changes made to the schedule must be approved on arrival at Grand River Hospital. Vacation requests must be submitted in writing prior to the rotation. It is preferred if they are received 3 weeks before the rotation. PARO guidelines are used in preparing the schedule. It is the responsibility of the resident to contact a colleague, if for any reason he/she is unable to appear for her/his on-call shift. Every effort must be made to cover the shift. Please notify Gwyneth Jalbert of any issues or concerns.

The office visit schedule enables each resident to attend an Ob/Gyn. Office 6-8 times during the rotation

Breastfeeding Support Services: Each Resident has the opportunity to spend time with a Lactation Consultant, either while they are doing their rounds, or by attending a breastfeeding teaching session. This enables the Resident to enhance his/her knowledge of breastfeeding. Obstetrical Education Rounds: Each Resident will participate in a group presentation to the Childbirth Program physicians, midwives and nursing staff on a topic related to Ob/Gyn and Family Practice. The group presentation takes place the last week of the rotation and should be about 45 minutes in length.

Pager: A pager is provided for the Resident while on-call.

ID Badges, Etc.: At Orientation ID badges and Prox cards will be obtained from Security. Please remember to return the Prox cards at the end of your rotation.

Parking: Parking is available in the parking garage. The cost is $74.00 per month, payable by credit card at the parking garage office.

Food and Drink: The Birthing Unit lounge contains a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. You must provide your own food. Cafeteria service is available daily from 0800-1800. A full-service Tim Horton’s is available 7 days a week from 0630 – 2100.

Off-site housing: A Medical Residence at 403 Park Street, containing 4 bedrooms, is available for all Residents at grand River Hospital. If you require off-duty housing please contact Chelsea Hillier at: [email protected] It is important to contact Chelsea as early as possible, as the rooms are taken quickly.
