The garden is home to various trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs that were mentioned in Shakespeare’s writings, were common during his lifetime or are modern cultivars of those older plants. The Garden Club of Evanston has maintained the garden since its creation more than 100 years ago. The garden was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The work was inspired by a series of William Hogarth paintings and engravings that Stravinsky viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947. Directed by Joachim Schamberger, Northwestern’s director of opera, the show ran at Cahn Auditorium in the winter.
