Once You Arrive: The ends at a footbridge over the Kennicott River, here you will find a free payphone where you can contact us as well as your lodging. Most lodging will arrange parking for you as well as transportation to and from their location. If not, there is parking at the footbridge for $5/day. Morning of the trip: KWG provides transportation, free of charge, to and from our office and/or start of trip. Our pick up are one half hour before the trip unless otherwise arranged. Our pick up locations are the footbridge or downtown McCarthy. You may choose the location closest to your lodging. If you are staying in Kennicott you are only a short walk from our office on Mainstreet Kennicott. Please make sure our office knows where you are staying and at what location you wish to be picked up.

What to Bring:

The key to any Alaskan travel is being prepared and wearing layers. Even if there is no in the sky we always bring a jacket.

Day Hikes and Climbing: • Comfortable pants, preferably ones that will dry quickly. • T-shirt (moisture wicking preferred) • Long sleeved shirt (synthetic or wool recommended) • Warm outer layer/ Jacket • Rain Jacket and Pants • Gloves, Warm hat/sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen • Socks (it’s a good idea to bring a second pair) • Hiking boots • Day pack, bottle • Lunch and Snacks (contact us if you need help arranging a lunch) • KWG will supply crampons and any other technical gear needed.

Packrafting: • Please bring everything listed for Day Hikes. • KWG will supply a Packraft, Helmet, PFD, Dry Suit, River Gloves and River Shoes. Make sure the office knows your sizes for these items prior to the trip.

Commonly asked Questions: Q: What is the like in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park? A: Be prepared for anything. May through September temperatures can range from 30s to the 80s. Layers are important and it can rain or be sunny any day of the .

Q: Do you still hike in the rain? A: Yes! Chances are your trip to is a once in a lifetime experience so put on a rain jacket and make the most of it! We try and stay as flexible as we can and will accommodate for weather as much as possible, but some of the most beautiful moments in the wilderness are when you start the hike out in the rain, the part, and your jaw drops.

Q: How bad are the mosquitos? A: Mosquitos tend to be worse in June and early July but in McCarthy they never really get too bad. We recommend you bring bug spray however you may be surprised by how little you use it. Best of all, there are no mosquitos on glaciers! Yet another reason get out there!

Q: Is there a store in McCarthy? A: Yes. It is small and limited but a good option for snacks and basic and supply needs.

Q: Is there cell phone reception in McCarthy? A: Verizon and Copper Valley Telephone are the only services in the McCarthy Area. No cell phones work well on the McCarthy Road until the last 15 or so miles.
