October 2015 President’s Report

The Swap Meet has been and gone and early indications reveal that the day was a success, thanks to the efforts by the respective committees and all of the members who help out in any way on the day. We were blessed with another brilliant spring day which bought out the general public as well as the diehard swappers. Attendance numbers may have been slightly down on last year’s, but the swap continues to be well supported. It is too early to know what our profit is from the day with accounts still coming in, but Treasurer Julie may have some early figures available at the next general meeting. The committees have already met and reviewed the activities of the day, analysing the outcomes and looking to see if the processes can be improved for next year. The Executive Committee has considered the suggestions received from all sources and will have a recommendation at the October general meeting for our Annual Charity donations. There is only one more general meeting before our AGM in November. This is your opportunity to become involved in the running of our club and I urge members to consider nominating for one of the many positions available on the committees. This provides the chance to be actively involved in the club, make your mark and continue to grow this very strong and active club. All positions are spilt for the AGM and there are indications that some of the people holding key positions will not be standing for re-election. This will be my last year as President so a new President will be required. Also not renominating will be Secretary Alan, who is standing down after two years as Secretary and Vice President Denis who has also served two years. The rest of the committee has indicated a willingness to re-nominate, but this shouldn’t stop any member who has a desire to be involved from nominating. The more interest that is shown in being on a committee and pushing the positions to a vote indicates a strong and vibrant membership and I strongly urge members to consider being involved by nominating for a position. See you all at the October meeting. Lindsay Drust

From the Editor The Swap Meet went off really well – great weather, all sites sold and lots of visitors. The profits should cover the Club running costs for the next 12 months. Thanks to every member that contributed in any way on the day – if we all put in, the organisers won’t have to work as hard. The Bendigo Swap is on next month. Contact Phil if you’d like one of the Club’s sites. The subs have been set at $65 for 2016. You can now pay them any time up to the AGM in November. This is very important if you have a vehicle on the Club Permit Scheme through our club, as VicRoads requires you stay a financial member to be able to drive your CPS vehicle. The Club is also required to advise VicRoads if your membership has lapsed and your Club Permit could be cancelled. You can pay your subs by direct deposit – see the info on page 2. If you check the address on your Journal envelope, you’ll see that you’re listed as a 2016 member after they’re paid. Have you considered standing for one of the Club’s executive positions at the AGM in November? There are a few current office-bearers that will not be re-nominating, so have a think about how you could help run the Club. A nomination form is included with this Journal. See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are! Brendan Walsh

October 2015 Rally Report

Rally to the Red Centre – 18 th August- 5th September 2015

Tuesday 18 th August …We left to go on our wonderful rally to Alice Springs. Our first night accommodation was at Lamaroo. Interesting place. We were given history of accommodation. It was going to be closed down so a group of volunteers decided to run it. Works very well. 19 th August …Port Augusta … On the way to Port Augusta some of us decided to meet up with Pat and Alan Lavis who were holidaying in Clare. Beautiful scenery in South Australia, very green and lush. Panic when April and Barry arrived at our accommodation in Port Augusta.. there was none!!!!!! The previous managers had done a midnight flit and taken all the computers with the bookings. Robyn and Hughie nearly had a fit. The new managers managed to give us 15 rooms and a beautiful meal. Re-booked for trip home. 20-21 st August ...Coober Pedy. … Wonderful drive. Roads great, scenery forever changing. First sight of Sturt Desert Peas. Accommodation at “Comfort Inn.” What a wonderful place to stay. This is an underground accommodation. FABULOUS. Very informative tour and talk on this place. Phil and Anne had opals in their wall. Not sure if Phil managed to dig some out. He hid them behind the TV so we wouldn’t see them. The opals the owners found whilst building their establishment was enough to pay for the work.

The next day we did two bus tours of Coober Pedy. The first was of the town, opal fields, Church, golf course and opal shop. The second was a sunset tour to the Breakaways. These are a land formation left after the inland sea evaporated 70 million years ago. We saw the dingo fence, the longest fence in the world. The sunset showed the wonderful colours of formations. The population of Coober Pedy is 3,500 and there are over 45 different nationalities. We had dinner at the pizza café. Jenni and Russell had the biggest pizza you have ever seen. 28”wide. Much laughter about that.

22-23 rd August ….Coober Pedy to Erldunda . Travelled to the SA-NT border. We all met there for a photo shoot. A lot of interest was shown by tourists. One of our members was heard to say “No-one’s interested in our Jags and Rolls, only the Morris Minor. Go Myrtle.” The little car was a real hit on the rally. The left-over pizza fed the multitudes at the border. Gwenyth’s birthday.

23 rd August ….. We travelled by bus to Uluru and the Olgas. Two wonderful guides told us about the culture of the aborigines and the rocks, vegetation, legends. We enjoyed the champagne and BBQ at sunset. Barry jumped up and served the champagne for us all. I think he was hungry. Russell’s 70 th birthday, Phil’s birthday.

Monday 24th August .…. Left Erldunda for Kings Creek Station. Wonderful canvas huts to sleep in, really cosy and different. Phil and Tom managed to venture into the wrong huts, much to the surprise to the occupants. The next day most of us climbed to the top of Kings Canyon. Judy had no fingernails left and only half her fingers. Scary climb. April and Barry enjoyed a helicopter flight. Our celebrity chefs cooked up a storm that night. Tuesday 25 th August Off to Alice Springs. Hooray, all cars made it.

Wednesday 26 th August ..Free day, but some members visited the School of the Air, Flying Doctors, National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame, Telegraph Station. Some people just relaxed.

Thursday 27 th August ….. Lloyd took us all to the West McDonnell Ranges. We visited the John Flynn memorial, then off to Simpsons Gap and then to Stanley Chasm. John and Jenny ate all the scones. Thursday evening we went down to Todd Mall for the night markets. Friday 28 th August ..Russell had car trouble so off to the garage to be repaired. A week later collected it. Jen, Lyn, Russell and Marlene hopped into Myrtle and off they went to the East McDonnell ranges. The rest of the group did the gorges as well. Fabulous day had by all. Some of us went to the Mall again that evening to see the torch light procession to start their festival week.

Saturday 29 th August …... A lot of our members went to the Truck show to have a look and to see who would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Wonderful news – John Grieve was inducted. Great excitement. A huge surprise to John. All his family was there, unbeknown to him until after the event. Well done John.

Sunday 30 th August .. Most members went to a place at Billy Goat Hill to see the truck parade. Rest of day free to get ready to leave the next day. Monday 31 st August Marla…Said sad goodbyes to Russell and Marlene. They had to stay until Thursday to collect their car. Uneventful day for all travelling back the way we had come to Marla Roadhouse. We were lucky to have a room to ourselves that evening. John was able to thank those who had a part in making his induction into the Trucking Hall of Fame possible. He said it was one of the best moments of his life. Julie (his daughter) also spoke of the sneakiness involved to keep it a secret from him. We were also joined by John and Jenny’s son Shane and his family for the evening. Tuesday 1 st September .. Glendambo…..Back on the road again. Most battled through a tremendous storm and arrived at Coober Pedy to mud and huge puddles. Rain heavy enough for Mike and Carole to put the top up on the Healey. More torrential rain overnight. Mike probably wished he had left the roof on as he forgot to zip up and faced a damp seat in the morning. Wednesday 2 nd September …Early start this morning as some were going to Roxby Downs. Others went to Woomera. Those going to Roxby passed a spectacular display of Sturt Desert Peas on the roadside. On to Port Augusta. They were expecting us this time. Thursday 3 rd September ..Burra. Short trip today 223km. Toured through the towns on the way and arrived at Paxton Square Cottages for the night. Most having a little trouble lighting their fires. Lenny’s fire- lighting skill helped out a couple of old ducks. Off to our evening meal. We had a private room so we had our speeches that evening. We had fines for all the naughty people. The money was collected in Russell’s tin hat and the money was donated to Legacy. It was Legacy Week that week. There was $240.00 collected from fines and donations. Huge thank you to all members. Jenni thanked everyone for their support especially after her crew had to stay in Alice and how disappointing it was they were not there to see Myrtle do so well.

th Friday 4 September . Off to Mildura for our last Trip to Alice night together. After another very enjoyable meal Judy Two old ducks in a Pale Green Morrie started her farewells in case she didn’t get time in the Stole the show in their wee little lorrie morning. Our group enjoyed a light day with party food the main attraction of the day. Lois brought along a patchwork quilt that she seemed pleased to have finished, and it was much admired. Keith had some more collectables that he acquired from a trip to Bendigo – very interesting items from early Chinese era in Bendigo. Dot provided a game which was enjoyed by all.

Bay to Birdwood Classic, Adelaide – 27 th September 2015 The Bay to Birdwood is the biggest rally in Australia, where about 1700 vehicles drive from West Beach in Adelaide up to the paddocks behind the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, a distance of about 55km. A feature of the event is the Concours d’Elegance, where cars are in absolutely pristine condition and those in the cars are dressed perfectly in the style of their vehicles. Club members Leigh and Lynne Johnston entered their Mainline ute in the Concours this year. There were 65 vehicles entered, with the best ten on display near the Birdwood Museum, where final judging takes place. Unfortunately they didn’t win (the winner was a 1956 Chevrolet Belair) but getting into the top ten is a very good effort. Hopefully we’ll hear about it at the Club meeting.

The view of Barratt Reserve at West Beach – the start of the big day.

October 2015 Pride and Joy

A very well-travelled 1956 BSA Bantam My Dad would know just how to really disappoint you as a young fellow by saying “could have had one of those for a couple of hundred dollars” while you were looking at a car magazine or chatting about a friend’s latest project! He used to ride a Bantam when he visited his uncle. His cousins on the other side had later model 175cc Super Bantams that he rode also and raved about. “But that wasn’t as good as your uncle’s CB500 Honda,” he would say. Dad would tell me stories like “Your grandfather rode his Dad’s Indian to the Melbourne Show when he was younger”. I’ve always been one to follow the Trading Post or Trader Tag, go to swap meets or read the local classifieds to see what’s about and then I found this little add on eBay for a BSA. Even though the bike was in pieces, it had already been painted and most of the chrome had been redone – it sounded great. It was in Queensland so a little hesitantly I watched the auction go three times without a bid before it got the better of me and I rang the gent who was advertising it. I spoke to him a couple of times (and the wife) before committing. So on the road to Toowoomba Dad and I went. Starting from Albury one afternoon (after completing a work course that day) we stopped for a short kip in Wellington before driving to Toowoomba to meet Karl at around dinner time next day. On meeting Karl, we chatted about the history of the bike and I will do my best to remember how his part of the story went. When Karl was a young buck back in the suburbs of Auckland, that’s right NZ, he and his young wife, or perhaps even fiancé at that stage, went to look at a set of cupboards at an elderly gent’s place but it wasn’t the cupboard that caught the eye of Karl! He had seen a sheet covering some sort of bike and getting the better of him he asked to have a look. On seeing the bike, he asked if it was for sale but the gent wasn’t ready to part with it yet. Karl persevered and asked again and again. Finally the gent caved and Karl had himself a Bantam. It was missing a few bits and had some odd parts on it from a newer model grafted but it ran and was good enough to learn to ride round the yard before he gained the confidence to venture on to the streets. To get it running properly, Karl had got a service book which explained all the maintenance routines. The time came when he wanted to tidy the Bantam up he took some photos to remember what she was before he started. He had to write letters to England back in the day via snail mail to get a parts list to order the correct transfer decals. He very careful completely stripped the bike bare all bar the engine which was left in one piece. He had bagged and tagged groups of parts so he could remember how to reassemble when the time came. Conveniently he was working at a foundry which had a sand blaster so everything was stripped to bare metal that could be, and a mate helped him to apply some paint. Now anyone who has researched BSA mist green will find it is one of those colours that changed week to week at the factory and there is no set recipe for. The colour he felt was closest was called Waitakii green, and I feel it was a brilliant choice – it is a very rich deep green and so period perfect. The timing cover was missing when Karl got the bike so again working at the foundry he had some help from the casters to make a dummy then pack the sand box and pour a cast aluminium timing cover. Children came along and job opportunities brought Karl and his family to Australia so the parts were gently placed in to blankets or wrapped in newspaper placed in boxes and tea chests amongst the family’s linen to ship across. There it stayed packed up, moving round Queensland with the family for over twenty years until Karl’s very successful bicycle sporting pursuits forced him to free up some cash and move the Bantam on to someone who could give it the time and care it needed to fire in to life once more. Dad and I packed all the parts in the ute, frame across the back seat, boxes of parts packed in rags in the tub along with all the paperwork he had with the bike, books, the letters from England, decals and some photos of the last time it was ridden. He even gave me the New Zealand registration papers. Dad and I were going to stop on the way home, but as we just got to each town the next one seemed not too far away so we kept driving. Around 1:00pm the next day after various shifts of driving we pulled in at home for a rest. When I started to put the jigsaw together I wasn’t quite as happy with the paint as I wanted to be so off for a visit to the paint shop for a colour match and a goody bag of equipment to apply the new acrylic with.

Page 18

October 2015 I did a bit of research and found the engine and seat base had come from a later bike – originally it would SPECIFICATIONS have been a 125cc but was fitted with a 150cc engine. The BSA Bantam D1 engine is 80thou over, it has smoothed casings, Bore and stroke (mm) 52 x 58 sandblasted for the cast look then two pack clear coated Cubic capacity (cc) 123 once assembled. I have not found what the muffler came Compression ratio 6.5:1 off, I was told perhaps a small Velocette, but it suits it and BHP 4 @ 5000rpm forms part of the story so I have left it on. I have Suspension - Front Telescopic - Rear Rigid modernized the old bird a bit with reliable CDI ignition Tyre size 2.75 x 19 and a conversion to 12 volt electrics, including a H4 Brake drum diameter 5 in reflector which I managed to fit the original Wipac lens Fuel tank capacity 1.65 gal to, and the lights are all LED for low draw. It has taken Wheelbase 50 in around 18 months to get the bike to the stage of showing Ground clearance 4.75 in it – the first show I actually pushed it up the road to. The Seat height 27 in result was well worth it as I won an encouragement Overall width 26.5 in trophy for doing so. Along the way it has become an eBay Dry weight (lb) 153 obsession, collecting advertising as well as the odd spare Years of manufacture 1948 -63 or three. I still don’t consider it finished as I want to replicate an advert I found on the internet, so there will be a few small changes to come yet. Everywhere I take the Bantam tons of guys come and chat to me and it amazes me, they all had one!!!

I must express many thanks to: • Garry at Oz Bantams, Maiden Gully, for specialist advice and engine components. • Russell at Paintright Walls & Windows, for all the great paint tips. • Ross at Rare Spares Tatura • Moose Racing Euroa, for a great wheel lacing job. • Dad, for encouraging me to push on and helping with assembly after many stories! • Sarah, for letting me focus on the Bantam.
