CHAPTER – 9 PRESS IN STATES AND UNION TERRITORIES

9.1.1. The Indian Press spread over 29 States and 7 Union Territories, has shown upward trend in terms of registered publications both at National as well as Regional level which plays a significant role in national as well as regional print media. This is evident from the statistical data collected over the years.

9.1.2. The Annual Statements received from the publishers online for 2018-19 indicate that Uttar Pradesh retained the top position in filing Annual Statements with 6,603 publications ( & periodicals). Madhya Pradesh came second with 5,833 and Maharashtra third with 4,574 publications (newspapers & periodicals). (Table 3.2)

9.1.3. The total number of registered publications (newspapers & periodicals) went up to 1,19,995 in all the States and Union Territories except Lakshadweep during the year under review.

9.1.4. As far as the registered publications are concerned, Uttar Pradesh continued to be the largest publisher with 18,140 publications (newspapers & periodicals) followed by Maharashtra 16,519 and Delhi 12,912. (Chapter 2 Table 2.4)

9.1.5. Delhi and Maharashtra brought out publications in 20 languages each followed by Uttarakhand in 19 languages, Tamil Nadu in 18 languages, Kerala 17 languages, Gujarat and Karnataka in 15 languages each, West Bengal in 14 languages, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in 11 languages each, Andhra Pradesh, , Bihar and Puducherry in 10 languages each. Out of the 22 main languages (including English) listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

9.1.6 As many as 37,942 publications (newspapers & periodicals) filed their Annual Statements online for the year 2018-19, which represents an increase of 20.62% per cent as compared to last year. Circulation-wise the press in Uttar Pradesh retained its top position with a combined circulation of 8,61,24,045 copies, followed by Maharashtra with 6,81,45,069 and Madhya Pradesh with 5,73,35,640 copies per publishing day.

9.1.7. A list of ‘Big’ ‘Medium’ and ‘Small’ publications in each State and Union Territory with their claimed circulation is given in Appendix I. An analysis of the status of the Press in various States and Union Territories along with their circulation is given as under:

9.2.1. Two Weekly publications were registered in the year 2018-19 raising total number of registered publications to 105 comprising 25 Dailies, 34 Weeklies, 23 Fortnightlies, 19 Monthlies, 2 Quarterlies and 2 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.2.2. Out of total 105 registered publications, only 33 publications filed their Annual Statements for 2018-19 comprising 18 Dailies, 10 Weeklies, and 5 Fortnightly. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.2.3 Total claimed circulation was 1,52,608 copies per publishing day. English Press remained the largest with 73,584 claimed copies followed by 43,387 copies. (Table 2)

Leading Newspapers

9.2.4 “Today Times”, an English/Daily with the circulation of 18,500 copies per publishing day from Port Blair was the highest circulated publication.

Registered Newspapers

9.3.1. A total number of 143 new publications were added during 2018-19. Of these, 51 were Dailies, 21 Weeklies, 06 Fortnightlies, 63 Monthlies, and 2 other periodicities. A total number of 2 publications were ceased during 2018-19. Thus, the total number of registered newspapers & periodicals has gone up to 7,042 comprising 1,900 Dailies, 9 Tri-Bi Weeklies, 1,224 Weeklies, 814 Fortnightlies, 2,739 Monthlies, 186 Quarterlies, 8 Annuals and 162 other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.3.2. Annual Statements were received from 2,503 publications i.e. 1,181 Dailies, 262 Weeklies, 191 Fortnightlies, 848 Monthlies, 14 Quarterlies, 2 Annual and 5 other. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.3.3. Data received from 7,042 publications claiming a total circulation of 3,22,80,478 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Telugu publications had the major share in the total claimed circulation consisting of 2,62,36,885 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.3.4 The Largest circulated daily was “” (English/Daily) from Secunderabad with a circulation of 5, 24, 523 copies per publishing day.

9.4.1. One new daily publication was registered during 2018-19. Total number of publications went to 32, comprising 12 Dailies, 1 Tri-Biweekly, 11 Weeklies, 5 Monthlies, 2 Quarterlies and 1 Annual. (Table 1)

9.4.2. Only 12 publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19, which included 10 in English and 1 in Hindi. Their combined claimed circulation figure was 18, 67,823 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.4.3 The largest circulated dailies were “”, English/Dailies published from Papum Pare with 44,972 copies each per publishing day.

4. ASSAM

Registered Newspapers

9.5.1. 10 new publications were registered during 2018-19 in the State comprising 4 Weeklies, 5 Monthlies and 1 Fortnightly. One publication was ceased during 2018-19. Thus, the number of total registered publications rose to 748 comprising 150 Dailies, 20 Tri-Bi Weeklies, 255 Weeklies, 84 Fortnightlies, 173 Monthlies, 34 Quarterlies, 5 Annuals and 27 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.5.2. In Assam, out of 748 registered publications, as many as 153 publications filed their Annual Statements online in 2018-19. Among them, 77 were Dailies, 42 Weeklies, 3 Fortnightlies, 24 Monthlies, 1 Quarterly, 1 Annual and 5 from others. Language-wise, 69 Assamese publications filed Annual Statements, followed by 26 English, 16 Hindi and 22 Bengali languages. (Table 2) Circulation

9.5.3. Annual Statements submitted were by the 153 publications claiming a total circulation of 32, 71,902 copies per publishing day. Dailies accounted for the large circulation with 22, 54,090 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Assamese Press was at the top with 14, 64,096 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

5. BIHAR

9.6.1. 19 new publications were added in the registration record of the State during 2018-19, comprising 5 Dailies, 1 fortnightly, 5 Weeklies, 6 Monthlies, 1 Quarterly and 1 other language. The total numbers of 3 publications were ceased during 2018-19. Now, there are 1,994 registered publications in the state comprising 565 Dailies, 33 Tri-Bi Weeklies, 701 Weeklies, 184 Fortnightlies, 365 Monthlies, 98 Quarterlies, 45 other periodicals and 3 Annuals. (Table 1)

9.6.2. In Bihar, 341 registered publications submitted their Annual Statements online for 2018-19. They included 211 Dailies. Among periodicals, 50 were Weeklies, 56 Monthlies, 13 Fortnightlies, 10 Quarterlies and 1 other. Language-wise, as many as 203 publications were brought out in Hindi followed by 106 in Urdu. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.6.3. Circulation claimed by the 341 publications, accounted for 1, 04,52,993 copies per publishing day in 2018-19. The share of Dailies was 82, 28,423 copies followed by the Weeklies 13, 75,749 copies per publishing day. The share of Hindi publication was 68, 61,322 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

6. CHANDIGARH

Registered Newspapers

9.7.1. Two new publications were registered in the U.T. of Chandigarh during 2018- 19. Out of Which, One is Daily and other one is Quarterly. The number of registered newspapers & periodicals in Chandigarh has, therefore, risen to 582 in 2018-19. These include 92 Dailies, 2 Tri-Bi Weeklies, 142 Weeklies, 39 Fortnightlies, 209 Monthlies, 54 Quarterlies, 7 Annuals and 37 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.7.2. Out of 582, only 97 publications from the UT Chandigarh submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19. These were from 50 Dailies, 29 Weeklies, 1 Fortnightly, 14 Monthlies and 03 from others. The Large number of publications were being brought out in English (39) and Hindi (38) followed by Punjabi (11). (Table 2)

Circulation

9.7.3. Total claimed circulation was 26,04,210 copies per publishing day. Dailies accounted for 18, 83,719 copies per publishing day, followed by Weeklies 5, 65,829. Language-wise, English papers were at top with total circulations of 11, 60,092 copies per publishing day followed by Hindi with 8, 89,045 copies per publishing day (Table 2).

7. CHHATTISGARH

Registered Newspapers

9.8.1. 41 new publications were added in the list of registration record of the state during 2018-19. Of these, 7 were Dailies, 9 Weeklies, 1 Fortnightly, 20 Monthlies, 1 Quarterly and 3 others. With this, the total number of newspapers & periodicals in the state has gone up to 1,604 comprising 311 Dailies, 3 Tri-Bi Weeklies, 592 Weeklies, 113 Fortnightlies, 452 Monthlies, 91 Quarterlies, 4 Annuals and 33 other periodicals. (Table 1)

9.8.2. In all, 569 publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19, i.e. 166 Dailies, 156 Weeklies, 33 Fortnightlies, 195 Monthlies, 15 Quarterlies, 01 Annual and 3 others periodicity. Language-wise, 523 publications were published in Hindi, 10 in English, 08 in Urdu and 26 were in Bi-lingual. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.8.3. The total circulation claimed by 569 publications was 97,14,904 copies per publishing day. Dailies were at the top with 76,06,201 copies per publishing day followed by Weeklies with 9,30,435 and Monthlies with 9,95,259 copies per publishing day. Language- wise, Hindi press accounted for 93,91,378 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.8.4. “NavBharat” from Raipur was the leading Daily (Hindi) with a circulation of 3,62,387 copies per publishing day.

(Table 1) 9.9.2 Out of 33 registered publications, as many as 22 publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19 which included 14 Dailies, 8 Weeklies, 9 Fortnightlies and 2 Monthlies. The total circulation of these 22 publications was 5,21,004 copies per publishing day. 9.11.1. As many as 100 new publications were registered during 2018-19. Of these, 14 were Dailies, 17 Weeklies, 4 Fortnightlies, 43 Monthlies, 9 Quarterlies, 02 Annual and 11 of other periodicities. Total 10 publications were ceased during 2018-19. The total number of registered publications has gone up to 12,912 comprising 1,190 Dailies, 59 Tri/Bi-weeklies, 2,513 Weeklies, 1,567 Fortnightlies, 5,382 Monthlies, 1,239 Quarterlies, 140 Annuals and 822 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.11.2. Publications in the Capital are published in all the major languages mentioned in the Indian Constitution.

9.11.3. Annual Statements were filed online by 2,607 publications for 2018-19. These included 631 Dailies, 615 Weeklies, 272 Fortnightlies, 928 Monthlies, 129 Quarterlies, 20 Annuals and rest 12 of other periodicities. 1,425 Hindi publications submitted their Annual Statements, followed by 552 English, 210 Urdu and 40 Punjabi publications. Circulation

9.11.4. Claimed circulation of these 2,607 publications totaled 4, 06,86,786 copies per publishing day. Dailies accounted for 1, 77,18,123 copies, Weeklies 1, 05,11,193 copies, Monthlies 84,79,897 copies and Fortnightlies 30,27,611 copies per publishing day. Circulation of Hindi publications was the highest with 2, 06, 97,472 copies followed by English with 1, 23, 67,616 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

With this, the number of registered publications has increased to 155; of these 30 were Dailies, 31 Weeklies, 19 Fortnightlies, 54 Monthlies, 13 Quarterlies, 7 of other periodicities and 1 Annual. (Table 1)

9.12.2. In all 42 publications filed their Annual Statements for the year 2018-19. Of these, 19 were Dailies, 6 Weeklies, 10 Monthlies, 6 Fortnightlies and 1 Quarterly. Language- wise, 25 publications in English, 11 in Marathi and 2 in Hindi were being brought out. (Table 2)

9.12.3. The circulation data furnished by the 42 publications aggregated to 4, 96,813 copies per publishing day. Dailies had maximum circulation of 3, 71,109 copies, while Weeklies of 59,676 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, English newspapers were leading with 1, 92,202 copies followed by Marathi 1,90,943 and Hindi 36,164 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

Hence, the total number of registered publications has now risen to 6,240 i.e. 815 Dailies, 17 tri/bi-Weeklies, 2,742 Weeklies, 737 Fortnightlies, 1,610 Monthlies, 157 Quarterlies, 11 Annuals and 151 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.13.2. Out of 6,240 as many as 2,491 publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19, which included 549 Dailies, 1,244 Weeklies, 364 Monthlies, 294 Fortnightlies, 29 Quarterlies and 09 other periodicals. (Table 2) Circulation

9.13.3. The 6,240 publications accounted for publication of 3,49,37,116 copies per publishing day, while the Dailies accounted for 1,93,97,965 copies and Weeklies 1,00,22,837 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Gujarati newspapers were at the top of circulation with 2,77,08,596 copies per publishing day. English and Hindi newspapers accounted for 21,62,199 and 36,90,359 copies per publishing day respectively. (Table 2)

9.16.2. In all, 458 publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19 which included 262 Dailies, 149 Weeklies, 14 Fortnightlies, 25 Monthlies, 2 Quarterlies and 6 other periodicities. Language-wise, English with 220 and Urdu with 145 publications were in the first and the second place respectively and Hindi with 43 publications. (Table 2)

9.17.1. 12 new publications were registered during 2018-19. They were 5 Dailies, 2 Weeklies and 5 Monthlies. One publication has been ceased during the year 2018-19. With this, Jharkhand now has 513 registered newspapers & periodicals comprising 141 Dailies, 115 Weeklies, 56 Fortnightlies, 148 Monthlies, 44 Quarterlies, 1 Annual and 8 of other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.17.2. As many as 188 registered publications submitted their Annual Statements for 2018-19. These mainly comprised 94 Dailies, 31 Weeklies, 12 Fortnightlies, 41 Monthlies, 6 Quarterlies and 4 others. Language-wise, Hindi had the highest number with 129 publications. (Table 2)

9.17.3. The Annual Statements filed by 188 publications for 2018-19 claimed a total circulation of 57, 35,960 copies per publishing day. Dailies were leading with 39, 24,098 copies. Language-wise, Hindi newspapers had been at the forefront with 42, 19,079 copies followed by Urdu with 10, 47,647 and English with 3, 50,927 copies per publishing day. (Table 2) Leading Newspaper

The Dailies accounted for 1, 02,31,315 copies followed by Weeklies 21,32,494 copies, Monthlies 17,07,281copies, Fortnightlies 4,71,588 copies, Quarterlies 1,39,412 copies, Annuals 13,000 and others 9100 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Kannada newspapers claimed a circulation of 91,84,525 copies and English 36,89,094 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.18.4. “The Times of ”, an English/Daily from Bangalore was the largest circulated newspaper with 4,71,362 copies per publishing day.

9.19.3. The 591 publications claimed a total circulation of 1,79,02,612 copies per publishing day for 2018-19. Out of these, Dailies accounted for 93,93,143 copies. Among periodicals, Monthlies had the Large share of 37,44,453 copies, followed by Weeklies of 30,28,579 copies per publishing day. The Malayalam Newspaper had the Large circulation of 1,56,66,809 copies during the reporting year (Table 2).

Leading Newspapers

9.19.4. “Malayalam Manorama”, Malayalam/Daily from Kochi with a circulation of 3,59,135 copies per publishing day was the largest circulated leading newspaper and “Vanitha”, Malayalam/Fortnightly from Kottayam was the leading periodical with 4,78,195 copies per publishing day in the category of periodicals.

The total number of registered newspapers & periodicals in the state increased to 11,666 comprising 1,632 Dailies, 8 Tri/Bi-weeklies, 4,509 Weeklies, 537 Fortnightlies, 4,337 Monthlies, 407 Quarterlies, 21 Annuals and 215 publications with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.21.2. 5652 registered publications submitted their Annual Statements during 2018- 19 comprising of 1,180 Dailies, 1,788 Weeklies, 244 Fortnightlies, 2,260 Monthlies, 167 Quarterlies, 8 Annuals and 6 of other periodicities. Language-wise, as many as 5,258 publications brought out in Hindi publications, submitted their Annual Statements. (Table 2)

9.22.1. As many as 287 new publications were registered in 2018-19. Out of these 43 were Dailies, 146 Weeklies, 12 Fortnightlies, 63 Monthlies, 14 Quarterlies, 02 Annuals and 07 of other Periodicities. 09 publications were ceased during the year. Thus, the total number of registered newspapers & periodicals in the State rose to 16,519. These included 1,738 Dailies, 54 Tri/Bi-Weeklies, 7,671 Weeklies, 1,200 Fortnightlies, 3,992 Monthlies, 885 Quarterlies, 341 Annuals and 638 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.22.2. From the State of Maharashtra, 4,393 publications submitted their Annual Statements for the period 2018-19. Annual Statements were submitted by 882 Dailies, 2,443 Weeklies, 172 Fortnightlies, 708 Monthlies, 111 Quarterlies, 14 other periodicities and 63 Annuals. Language-wise, 2,787 Annual Statements were from Marathi, 594 from Hindi and 416 from English publications. (Table 2)

9.22.3. The above 4,393 publications claimed a total circulation of 6, 81,45,069 copies per publishing day in 2018-19. Dailies had the Large share of 4, 26,68,250 copies per publishing day. Among periodicals, Weeklies had the Large circulation of 2, 01,23,489

copies followed by Monthlies 35,65,242 copies and Fortnightlies 7,63,186 copies. Language- wise, Marathi publications were leading in circulation with 4, 00,85,115 copies followed by Hindi with 1, 07,06,456 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.27.1. In all, 20 new publications were registered during 2018-19. These were 4 Daily, 07 Weeklies, 03 Fortnightlies, 01 Monthlies and 03 Quarterlies, and 02 publications of other periodicities. One publication has been ceased during the year 2018-19. Thus, the total number of registered newspapers and periodicals in the state went up to 2,159 by the end of 2018-19, comprising 247 Dailies, 4 tri/bi-Weeklies, 512 Weeklies, 311 Fortnightlies, 719 Monthlies, 248 Quarterlies, 30 Annuals and 88 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.27.2. Annual Statements were received from 623 publications in 2018-19. These included 165 Dailies, 188 Weeklies, 139 Monthlies, 100 Fortnightlies, 26 Quarterlies, 2 Annual and 3 with other periodicity. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.27.3. The above 623 publications altogether claimed a total circulation of 1,36,83,251 copies per publishing day during 2018-19. Dailies had the Large circulation of 73,14,497 copies followed by Weeklies with 31,77,203 copies and Monthlies with 15,80,898 copies. Language-wise, Odia publications had a total circulation of 1, 15,93,942 copies. (Table 2)

9.27.4. “”, an Odia Daily from Khurda, was the largest circulated newspaper as per the Annual Statement filed by the publication in the State with a circulation of 4,61,007 copies.

9.29.1. As many as 37 new publications were registered in the State during the period 2018-19. These consist of 4 Dailies, 19 Weeklies, 2 Fortnightlies, 6 Monthlies, 4 Quarterly and 2 of other periodicities during the year. The total number of registered newspapers and periodicals increased to 1,999 by the end of 2018-19 comprising 288 Dailies, 14 Tri- Bi/Weeklies, 702 Weeklies, 235 Fortnightlies, 595 Monthlies, 80 Quarterlies, 20 Annuals and 65 other periodicals. (Table 1)

9.29.2. Annual Statements were received from 362 publications in 2018-19. The statements were received from the publishers of 78 Dailies, 118 Weeklies, 35 Fortnightlies, 105 Monthlies, 12 Quarterly, 3 Annuals and 11 from other publicities. Language-wise, 151 were in Punjabi followed by 102 in Hindi. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.29.3. The total circulation claimed by 362 publications amounted to 43,28,391 copies per publishing day during the period under report. Daily newspapers commanded 25,67,685 copies, followed by Weeklies with 9,14,684 and Monthlies with 4,18,274 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Punjabi publications dominated, with a circulation of 22,42,491 copies which was followed by Hindi publications with 14,64,184 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.29.4. “” a Hindi/Daily from Jalandhar (printed also from Ambala) claimed a circulation of 6,83,205 copies per publishing day. “Dainik Savera Times”, a Hindi/Daily from Jalandhar claimed a circulation of 3,34,218 copies per publishing day.

The total number of registered newspapers and periodicals in the State has increased to 6,581 consisting of 880 Dailies, 22 Tri- Bi/Weeklies, 1,610 Weeklies, 2,420 Fortnightlies, 1,261 Monthlies, 237 Quarterlies, 21 Annuals and 130 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.30.2. The total number of Annual Statements received from the state of Rajasthan was 1,953. These included 438 Dailies, 416 Weeklies, 808 Fortnightlies, 252 Monthlies, 29 Quarterlies, 3 Annuals and 07 with other periodicities. Language-wise, Hindi newspapers comprised the largest number 1,750 in online submission of Annual Statements. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.30.3. The 1,953 publications that submitted their Annual Statements claimed a circulation of 2,21,82,046 copies per publishing day during 2018-19. Dailies commanded a circulation of 1,49,84,564 copies. Among periodicals, Fortnightlies with 34,73,618 copies were leading and followed by Weeklies with 23,93,305 copies, which was further followed by Monthly with 12,70,001 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Hindi newspapers were the most circulated with 2, 09,61,383 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

Leading Newspapers

9.30.4. “Dainik Bhaskar”, a Hindi/Daily from Jaipur, was the leading newspaper with 5,10,555 copies per publishing day.

9.31.1. Two new publication was registered in 2018-19 in the State.

9.31.2. Out of 118 registered publications, only 31 publications submitted their Annual Statements from the State of Sikkim in 2018-19. They were 17 Dailies and 14 Weeklies. (Table 2) Circulation

9.31.3. As per data from the above 31 publications, a total circulation of 11,57,170 copies was claimed by the publication. The share of Dailies in it was 11,12,812 copies and of Weeklies was 44,358 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

Leading Newspapers

9.31.4. “”, an Urdu/Daily from Gangtok was the leading newspaper with a circulation of 45,000 copies per publishing day. “”, an English/Daily from Gangtok claimed a circulation of 36,810 copies per publishing day.

9.32.1. A total number of 110 new publications were registered in 2018-19. These were 08 Dailies, 14 Weeklies, 12 Fortnightlies, 74 Monthlies, 1 Quarterly, 1 of other periodicity and 2 were ceased during the year. The total number of registered newspapers and periodicals has gone up to 6,556 comprising 582 Dailies, 57 tri/bi-Weeklies, 882 Weeklies, 793 Fortnightlies, 3,726 Monthlies, 278 Quarterlies, 46 Annuals and 192 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.32.2. Annual Statements were received from 1,218 publications during 2018-19. These were from 215 Dailies, 132 Weeklies, 715 Monthlies, 126 Fortnightlies, 17 Quarterlies, 3 Annual and 10 with other periodicities. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.32.3. The above 1,218 publications that submitted their Annual Statements, had a combined circulation of 1,83,48,960 copies per publishing day in the year 2018-19. Dailies had a share of 96,94,828 copies, Weeklies of 30,95,376 copies and Monthlies of 38,78,774 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Tamil publications had a circulation of 1, 30,67,830 copies, followed by English 36,51,327 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

Leading Newspapers

9.32.4. “Daily Thanthi”, a Tamil/Daily published from Chennai had the largest circulation of 4, 02,659 copies per publishing day.

9.32.2. The total circulation of 1, 22,89,073 copies per publishing day during 2018-19 was registered. The daily newspapers of the state contributed 78,53,228 copies in the total

9.33.1. Only 2 new publications were registered during 2018-19 and thus making a total number of registered newspapers periodicals in the State to 162 comprising, 39 Dailies, 2 Tri-Bi/Weeklies, 87 Weeklies, 12 Fortnightlies, 15 Monthlies, 5 Quarterlies and 2 other periodicals. (Table 1)

9.33.2. The Publishers of 60 publications from the State submitted their Annual Statements for the period 2018-19. These included 21 Dailies, 34 Weeklies, 2 Fortnightlies, 2 Monthly and 1 other periodical. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.33.3. The aforesaid 60 publications reportedly claimed a total circulation of 6,72,842 copies per publishing day during 2018-19. The daily newspapers of the state contributed 5,13,927 copies in the total circulation. Bengali press dominated in the State with a circulation figure of 5,02,991 copies followed by English 1,29,511 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.33.4. “Dainik ”, a Bengali/Daily from West Tripura was the leading newspaper with a circulation of 83,392 copies per publishing day.

Registered Newspapers

9.34.1. In all 23 new publications were registered during 2018-19. Out of these 1 Daily, 09 Weeklies, 03 Fortnightlies, 07 Monthlies, 2 Quarterlies, 1 Annual periodicity and 10 publications were ceased during the year. Hence, by the end of 2018-19 the number of registered newspapers and periodicals increased to 3,531 comprising 395 Dailies, 7 Tri- Bi/Weeklies, 2061 Weeklies, 386 Fortnightlies, 503 Monthlies, 106 Quarterlies, 13 Annuals and 60 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.34.2. From the State of Uttarakhand, a total of 1,915 publications had submitted their Annual Statements for the year 2018-19. The publications that submitted their Annual Statements comprised 205 Dailies, 1,290 Weeklies, 179 Monthlies, 209 Fortnightlies, 21 Quarterlies, 08 were of other periodicities and 3 of Annual. Hindi dominated the scene with a total of 1,734 publications. (Table 2)

Circulation 9.34.3. The above 1,915 publications claimed a total circulation of 1,69,28,286 copies per publishing day in 2018-19. Weekly publications were leading with 95,30,383 copies followed by Dailies 44,07,978 copies per publishing day. Language-wise- Hindi publications were leading with 1,49,98,585 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.35.1. As many as 175 new publications were registered during the year 2018-19. These comprised of 26 Dailies, 70 Weeklies, 07 Fortnightlies, 56 Monthlies, 11 Quarterlies, 1 Annual, 04 of other periodicities and 27 were ceased during the year. Thus, by the end of 2018-19, the number of registered newspapers and periodicals has increased to 18,140. Periodicity-wise break up of these publications was 3,566 Dailies, 24 Tri/Bi-Weeklies, 8,810

Weeklies, 1,405 Fortnightlies, 3,158 Monthlies, 749 Quarterlies, 57 Annuals and 371 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.35.2. Annual Statements from 6,480 publications were received from Uttar Pradesh in 2018-19. The Annual Statements were received in respect of 2,204 Dailies, 2,997 Weeklies, 299 Fortnightlies, 837 Monthlies, 124 Quarterlies, 7 Annuals and 12 with other periodicities. Language wise, Hindi and Urdu were on first and second position in filing Annual Statements with 5,171 & 848 publications respectively. (Table 2)

Circulation

9.35.3. The 6,480 publications, which submitted their Annual Statements, had a combined circulation of 8,61,24,045 copies per publishing day during 2018-19. Dailies claimed a total circulation of 4,51,83,058 copies. Among periodicals Weeklies were leading with a circulation of 3,06,62,045 copies per publishing day. Language-wise, Hindi newspapers had a circulation of 6, 62,60,892 copies followed by Urdu with 1, 32,34,658 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

9.35.4. Among dailies “”, a Hindi/Daily from Lucknow, claimed a circulation of 3,87,409 copies per publishing day.

Registered Newspapers

9.36.1. In all, 55 new publications were registered during 2018-19 in West Bengal. These included 5 Dailies, 12 Weeklies, 10 Fortnightlies, 11 Monthlies, 1 Annual, 12 Quarterlies, 4 of other Periodicities and 1 was ceased during the year. The total number of registered newspapers and periodicals went up to 5,421 by the end of 2018-19. There were 316 Dailies, 11 tri/bi-Weeklies, 1,002 Weeklies, 1,052 Fortnightlies, 1,608 Monthlies, 922 Quarterlies, 65 Annuals and 445 with other periodicities. (Table 1)

9.36.2. As many as 798 Annual Statements were received from the publishers in West Bengal in 2018-19. These included 122 Dailies, 159 Weeklies, 231 Fortnightlies, 202 Monthlies, 68 Quarterlies, 8 Annual and 8 with other periodicities (Table 2).

9.36.3. The above 798 publishers had a combined circulation of 1, 33,58,824 copies per publishing day during 2018-19. Among these the share of Dailies was 68,82,598 copies, followed by Weeklies 33,84,628 copies. Language-wise, Bengali publications maintained the highest total circulation with 78,82,146 copies, followed by English with 32,25,794 copies and Hindi with 12,11,094 copies per publishing day. (Table 2)

Leading Newspapers

9.36.4. “Ananda Bazar Patrika”, a Bengali/Daily published from Kolkata commanded the largest circulation of 11,10,402 copies per publishing day in the newspapers category.
