Dear GIWA supporters, honourable guests, esteemed COMMITTEE friends, journalists, GIWA finalists and Awards winners 2017, We are delighted to welcome you tonight to the British Museum for the very first Greek International Women Awards (GIWA) Ceremony. The GIWA awards aim to recognize Greek professional female talent worldwide and to identify the opportunities and challenges that these outstanding women have faced in the fulfilment of their dreams. The GIWA awards honour the accomplishments of women of Greek origin in the fields of: Arts & Design, Entrepreneurship, Fashion, Finance, Hospitality, Science, Shipping, Social Responsibility, Social Science, Sports and as we want to encourage the younger generations of women to fulfil their dreams, we also have NAYA BOLTETSOU CHRISTINA JOANNA GALANIS GEORGIA the Young Star Award 18-23. FOTINELLI GAVRIILIDOU Aristotle has highlighted that “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”. Accordingly, GIWA’s aim is to encourage, motivate and inspire more Greek women to achieve their goals and to maintain their ambitions until they are fulfilled. In this regard, the GIWA awards are creating a dynamic community of influential women who are determined not only to build professional and personal relationships with one an- other, but to also be advocates for an exciting new generation of leadership and influential talent worldwide. Our efforts have been marked and supported by the eminent professor Mrs. Hélène Glykatzi-Ahrweiler who has graciously accepted the Life Time Achievement Award Mrs. Hélène Glykatzi-Ahrweiler has been leading by example and her personality, career and IRO IOANNA MARIA MARIA SYRIGOU ethics constitute an inspiration for Greek professional women. KOUTSIOUMPA PASCHALIDOU SARANTOPOULOU We would like to express our gratitude to our judges, sponsors and supporters. We trust that this evening is just the beginning of what we hope will become an institution honour- ing Greek women and their achievements in years to come. Let’s support each other, for a more united . I wish you all a memorable evening.

We are here to help. At Seleni, we believe that when we strengthen the emotional Awards. I also thank all those who believed in this e ort and became supporters or sponsors of this initiative. health of one person, we strengthen the entire community. It is praiseworthy that GIWA is already accomplishing its objectives from its very first edi- tion; that is, promoting dynamic Greek women who constantly keep creating and accom- plishing great things across the world. This is living proof of the outward-thinking nature and the universality of the Greek spirit. GIWA helps to enhance the legacy of Greece, which is particularly important as the country is at a critical turning point in terms of its direction and international image. GIWA showcases and honours the work of women, which historically lacks visibility and recognition. It promotes them as bright examples of self-confidence and success towards other women and across society as a whole. I would like to express my admiration and my warm congratulations to all the nominees of GIWA and especially the five finalists in each category. GIWA proves that all Greek women represent a tremendous human potential which can be capitalised in order to face the current economic and political turbulence of Greece and build a better future. Finally, GIWA also gives the opportunity to all these women with rich experiences from different professional backgrounds and geographic locations to meet each other, to coop- erate and to develop solidarity among them. It is important that this network evolves into an open dialogue about our civil responsibility and our role towards a common trajectory with other people. Hence, more women can leave their mark on the new world that we are currently building.

Best of luck for all future endeavours! SU PPO RTING INDIVI D UALS & FAM I LI ES Rodi Kratsa Former First Vice-President of the European Parliament President of the International Thank you in advance for supporting the critical work we do. Association for the Promotion of Women of Europe (AIPFE)

She has her own piano trio named Psyché Trio, she writes music for theatre and lms, worked with djs, sang in the Opera of in the role of Papagena in Magic Flute, sings in a Renaissance ensemble based in Athens named ‘Con- cert dans L’oeuf’ and enjoys teaching and leading creative workshops. 10 11 Leon of Athens London-based Greek indie-pop experimentalist Leon Of Athens is re- leasing his forthcoming album Xenos, produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), due out on February 9th. The album follows the highly acclaimed release of his 2015 debut album Global, which was championed by the likes of The Guardian, NME, Q, New York Times and more. The album Xenos is a beautiful, thoughtful piece of work, informed by the Syrian refugee crisis, Brexit, but also personal upheavals: fractured relationships, lost faith, youth, freedom and death. From the uplifting indie-pop of previous singles ‘Aeroplane’ and ‘Fire In- side You’, to the dark creeping electronics of the title track and ‘Serpents Egg’, Leon Of Athens proves himself an intriguing and exciting force. There are delicate moments on the stark piano led ballads of ‘Letters To My Father’ and ‘Final Moment’, while the album closes with the joyous ode to his favourite place in the world ‘Corfu’.

“Brainy pop inspired by Bernardo Bertolucci, inflected with electronic, folk and other flavours” – The Guardian

“Leon of Athens has mastered the art of electronica-tickled, melodic pop.” – NME

“The Greek god of indie-pop” – WonderlandM
