Each month during the Year of Mercy our the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops will offer brief reflections on mercy and concrete suggestions of how we can live out the mercy that God offers us all. These are perfect for busy days since they help us to slow down for just a few minutes and think about the gifts God has blessed us with and how we can share them.

Bishops’ January Reflection on Mercy When we think about pilgrimages, we probably think about medieval people walking great distances to awe-inspiring churches. Yet, Pope Francis describes what is at the heart of pilgrimage and encourages us to each make one during this Jubilee of Mercy. He writes that “life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator (it means traveler), a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination” (MV, no. 14). Pope Francis encourages each of us to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door in our diocese some time during this Jubilee of Mercy. Being committed to the journey of pilgrimage helps us focus our attention on our spiritual journey and walk closer with God. Similarly, our daily journey to live out the mercy of God “is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice” (MV, no. 14).

• Each day, give yourself one small goal of mercy, compassion, and love to journey toward—for example, being kind to a difficult coworker—so that, by those actions, you are able to walk closer to God on the pilgrimage of Christian life.

With your spouse, family, friends, or faith community, plan to join a pilgrimage to the Holy Door at the Cathedral in Savannah on February 20th or Fr. Jerry’s cruise/pilgrimage to the Holy Door in Quebec City beginning on August 20th. These are just two good possibilities. Some are traveling to the Holy Land or Rome or a Marian Shrine. It would be a wonderful project in the dead of winter to make plans for a pilgrimage later this year.

Father Tim McKeown, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church in Brunswick and Nativity of Our Lady Church in Darien, has been appointed by Pope Francis as a member of the Missionaries of Mercy for this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Fr. Tim will conduct our Diocesan Pilgrimage at the Cathedral on Saturday, February 20th. There will be at least a couple of buses going from Augusta to Savannah on that day and you can call the Church Office, 706-733-6627, to reserve a spot. Or drive by yourself and make a weekend of it with your family.

The cruise starts in Boston on August 20th and it is on the Holland American line. I am both surprised and delighted that about a dozen folks have signed up to join me. If you are interested, feel to contact Holland American or a travel agent and shop around for the best deal.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18-25. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years, in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity. For the last few years we have joined with the good people of Mann Memorial UMC in an Ecumenical Prayer Service. This year it will be held at their Church, 2705 Milledgeville Rd Augusta, GA 30904 on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm with Father Lou Lindsey leading our delegation. Please try to attend so that we can have a good showing.

Fr. Fredy Angel will be preaching at the vigil Mass next Saturday and the morning Masses next Sunday. He is a dynamic Colombian-born missionary priest who has transformed a previously dispersed and struggling Catholic community in rural southern Georgia into a vibrant and growing parish of African American, Caucasian, Latino and Asian American Catholics. These different groups have come together into one family, one “body of Christ” and are setting an example for the larger community. To accommodate and further spur its growth, the recently renamed St. Anthony of Padua Parish, under Father Angel’s leadership, has embarked on the ambitious construction of a large new church outside Ray City, Georgia.

We did not have a Mission Co-op Collection this past fall because we wanted to support the construction of this new missionary Church in our Diocese. Fr. Fredy has finally freed his busy schedule to make this appeal and envelopes will be available next weekend to support his good work. In recognition of his tireless and faith-filled leadership and exemplary missionary discipleship and for bringing the “light of Christ” to the people he serves, Father Angel is the recipient of Catholic Extension’s 2015-2016 Lumen Christi Award.

On the Way Home: Jesus didn’t consider a wedding celebration to be “beneath him.” He was there, fully present. What is our attitude toward family celebrations—birthdays, weddings, baptisms, or funerals? How can we be more present to these happy or sad times together? Please keep in your prayers this weekend the couples who participated in the Marriage Prep Workshop. Pray that they will understand the importance of their love to the Church. McCormack, Ph.D. Both Jesus and contemporary psychology herald the power of forgiveness for both our salvation and our day-to-day peace of mind. Holding a grudge is deadly: psychologically, spiritually, and sometimes bodily. Folk wisdom says crisply: “My anger is eating me up.” Pope Francis writes “pray every Christian will have a humble and compassionate heart…to forgive and to give.” Let us meet at the intersection of science and faith. We can learn from each other. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” Matthew 18:20.
