Los Angeles Maritime Institute Announces New Executive Director

LOS ANGELES, CA (Dec. 5, 2013) – The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI), a youth character- building and training organization serving the Harbor Communities of San Pedro and Wilmington and the Greater Los Angeles Area since 1992, has announced the appointment of Captain Bruce Heyman as its new executive director.

“We are fortunate to have Bruce as our next Executive Director because he has the breadth of perspective and experience to lead LAMI into the future”, stated Eric Johnson, LAMI Board Chair. “Bruce will bring leadership and creativity to our educational programs and community at large.”

An experienced executive leader and manager with an outstanding track record of delivering results, Heyman retired from Motorola after 26 years climbing from an engineer to Vice President. For the bulk of his Motorola career, he managed large teams of engineers, business professionals, marketing, strategy, sales and manufacturing that were spread across multiple sites, including Europe.

“I could not be more excited and humbled with my appointment as Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s executive director where I can continue to build upon the excellent leadership provided by Martyn Clark over the last year,” remarks Heyman. “Once you see the magic that occurs when kids take these magnificent tall ships to sea, it becomes infectious. We’re going to focus on increasing our reach to ensure more youth experience the magic of and are equipped with the skills needed to succeed in life.”

Since retiring from Motorola, Heyman has focused most of his time and energy at getting back to the sea on large sailing vessels. Before joining the San Diego Maritime Museum at the start of the construction of the San Salvador, he was responsible for maintaining the Spirit of Dana Point and Pilgrim where he expanded the Volunteer corps by a factor of five while saving tens of thousands of dollars by bringing solid engineering and program management techniques to bear. Heyman has a BSEE, MSEE and MBA. He is a licensed USCG Captain.

Los Angeles Maritime Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing character-building, educational, sail training adventures for youth. Located in San Pedro, , the organization is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its TopSail Youth Program, which takes place aboard the twin , and Exy Johnson.
