Head Coach Former WFU All-American Jerry Haas is in his seventh season at the helm of the Deacon program...

After leading a veteran lineup (four seniors and a junior) to a fourth-place NCAA finish last season, Haas is breaking in a young crop of Deacs this year. He’s played freshmen and sophomores in every event so far this season, providing them with experience which should pay dividends for the team down the road. Led by , the nation’s top- ranked senior golfer as well as the coach’s nephew, Wake Forest posted impressive performances with its youthful lineup this fall. In His Own Words... On his long-term plan for the Wake Forest golf program: “Now that we’re back to being one of the better teams in the country,we need to stay there. That’s the mark of a good program. When I took this job,Dr.Hooks told me not to worry about building a team, build a program. He was right. You have to get good people. And good people gravitate toward this school.”

On his coaching philosophy: “My philosophy changes as the players progress through their careers here. At first,I hopefully nurture them a little bit, help them make small changes here and there. But as they go,I may get tougher on them, maybe a little more stern in guiding them to their goals. I’m certainly trying to help them become the best person they can be. In anything you have to be flexible and make changes and adjustments. I’ve been patient with them, but at the same time, not too patient. They want to be directed and have a goal they’re working toward.”

On daily interaction with the team: “If the coach works out with them and the coach can play a lit- tle bit and is out there every day, that means a lot. The players don’t mind showing up and doing work if somebody’s around watching and giving them good information. I think that’s what I bring to the table,is that I’m there for them.“

On how his life experiences help him as a coach: “I’ve played with the best players in the world,I’ve played against the best players, and I’ve played some pretty good golf myself. I think I can recog- nize somebody that has a little talent,a little spunk,or a little heart – somebody that likes to com- pete. That’s all I’m asking from my guys, is to get out there and compete.”

“I’ve struggled in my career at times, and I won three times on the Nike Tour,so golf has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me. I think the kids look at me with respect, and think ‘this guy persevered;he knows what he’s talking about,so maybe I ought to listen.’”

On his goals for WFU golf: “I want nothing more than to win an NCAA title as a coach at Wake Forest. It would be a very emotional thing for me. I’m very proud of this school and the success we’ve had in athletics across the board. This school has meant a lot and has been good to me and my family. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to try and reach that goal.”

Haas arrived at Wake Forest in the fall of 1981, title in 1982 and 1984 and advancing almost seven years after his brother helped lead the to the semifinals of the 1984 U.S. Deacons to back-to-back NCAA titles.
