- 7 - Seattle Boeing Factory – Paine Field (Text & Photos by Mike MORO)

During my Summer holiday to Canada I was able to organize a little trip to the Seattle Boeing Factory / Paine Field. After almost 2 hours at the border explaining that we’re just crossing to the US for a one day visit to the Boeing Factory we finally made it (is that so weird?).

We took a tour through the factory itself, were unfortunately absolutely no camera, phone, etc... were allowed. But for all those interested the tour is great. It’s a little bit too touristic for my taste but the inside view of the production line is extraordinary. After the tour we stayed for some time at the terrace at the Future of Flight Building. A fantastic view over the whole flight line. That airport is so stuffed with aircrafts, there’s almost no free parking place left.

The factory is the largest building in the world by volume at 13’385’378 m3 and covers 399’480 m2. Imagine a building so big, the doors are the size of a football field (and there are 6 of them). A ceiling 11 stories high, and with that surface under its roof gives enough room for 74 football fields, or all of the Disneyland Magic Kingdom theme park (along with 48’000 m2 of covered parking). Picture it with over a million light fixtures producing an $18 million annual electricity bill,

The factory infrastructure is absolutely impressive. About 30’000 people work at the factory. The site includes 19 restaurants, a fire brigade, shops, a nursery, etc… The maintenance corridors underground are long enough to permit the employees to do some jogging during their time off.

- 8 - 30’000 employees work in 8 hour shifts, 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. The weekend is normally off, except if special work needs to be done. A normal shift change, takes about 2 hours, because the number of people going in and out would overload the highways and roads around the airport. Therefore Boeing introduced a shuttle system to bring employees in and out reducing traffic flow.

2 of the famous Dreamlifters were also present as well as an ANA 787 in the new ANA color scheme.
