The faculty and staff at Lynchburg College are dedicated to a liberal arts education that prepares students to address the challenges of the workplace and the world by thinking creatively and intelligently. We are a community that is truly student-centered. Our alumni and friends spread the word about the benefits of a Lynchburg College education, help mentor our students, and give back to the College as they are able. This Special Annual Report points to the contributions of many individuals who help make LC an outstanding academic institution, accessible to students of all backgrounds. 1 A Message from the President As our student body has grown, so has momentum to expand and modernize our Student Center, built in 1968. As Lynchburg College’s president for the past twelve years, I’ve seen a direct correlation between increases in student enrollment and major building projects. Schewel Hall and Shellenberger Field are excellent examples. The expanded Student Center will help ensure that we continue to attract future Hornets. I’d like to extend a special thanks to our Student Center Campaign Chair Charles P. Collings ’73 and Vice Chair Suzanne Farmer Flynn ’80, the Campaign Executive Committee, and the Board of Trustees for their outstanding leadership of the Student Center initiative. Over the past decade, the College’s reputation for excellence has grown nationally and internationally. Student enrollment has nearly doubled to 2,700, and recent scores on the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) show that LC students rank well above the national average. LC was one of eight colleges in the nation chosen for further study for its continuing good marks on NSSE. The NSSE staff was impressed by how intentionally we are creating systems 2 VISION, LEADERSHIP, PERFORMANCE Lynchburg College has a well-earned sense of pride. As chair of the Board of Trustees, I have a keen awareness of LC’s competitive advantages. The College garners national accolades for its academic and athletic successes and is well known for its creativity and faculty-student research. The value of a Lynchburg College education continues to increase. One of our greatest assets is the College’s team of of support, ranging from achievement and persistence administrators, faculty, and staff led by President awards for students who have shown significant academic Kenneth R. The increased interaction among students in a centralized location will give new meaning to ‘Hornet Pride.’” Alex Tomko ‘12 President, Class of 2012 Ask students what the campus needs most and the answer will likely be, “a new student center.” When LC’s newly renovated and expanded Student Center is complete in the fall of 2014, it will not only meet the needs of today’s students, it will keep pace with the College’s top-quality academic programs and nationally recognized athletic teams.
