olours fill the air during the festive occasion of Holi that declares the victory of good over dire. By spreading the Cmessage of goodness, people of India celebrate Holi, beating all sorrows and hurdles. This spring festival reaches everyone with immense joy and pleasure, everyone singing and dancing, sprinkling colours on their loved ones and spreading the message of unity and togetherness. Also known as the festival of love, Holi evokes Hounityl and togethernessi in the blood and breath of Indians. The ancient Hindu festival, which has its origin in India and Nepal, is being celebrated by every citizen irrespective of religion and region. The word “holi” originated from Holika, based on Hindu mythology. Holi blazons the arrival of spring, a beautiful season of good over EVIL fragrance and love. People throw colours at each other, expressing a sense of brotherhood.

16 Xpressions - March 2015 COVER STORY

According to Hindu mythology, Holi, the festival of good winning over evil, represents the death of Holika. The story goes that there once lived an asura who wanted to kill his son. Hiranyakashipu, the asura, received a boon from God that he can never be destroyed by any force, due to which, Hiranyakashipu considered himself God and expected everyone to worship him. His son Prahlada, however, refused to do so as he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu, along with his sister Holika, devised a plan to kill Prahlada by making him sit on fire with Holika, who had a protective sheet around her. However, Prahlada emerged unharmed, while Holika was burned to death, and Hiranyakashipu was killed by Lord Vishnu. As a representation of Holika’s death, Holika bonfire is set on the eve of Holi.

Irrespective of age, people form groups and spill different colours on others. Playing with colours, irrespective of age, is considered the best part of Holi celebrations. People also exchange sweets during this occasion of happiness and joy.

In the northern Indian states, especially in Gujarat, Holi celebrations are for two days. On the eve of Holi, Holika bonfire is lighted, representing the eviction of evil from the homes of people, who sing and dance around the bonfire. On the second day, colours are sprinkled on each others, spreading happiness and joy. Holi is celebrated on full moon days. Hence, the date may vary according to the Hindu calendar every year. There are a number of interpretations and significance of the festival, including the victory of good over evil, arrival of spring, and spreading of joy, unity, and brotherhood.

In Braj region of India, where Lord Krishna is said to have spent his childhood, the festival is celebrated for 16 days as a tribute to the divine love of Radha for Krishna. These days are also considered as the days to forgive and express gratitude to the wonderful lives of people. In Ahmedabad, pots containing buttermilk are hung above streets, which are then broken by men in a special game. There are various versions of Holi celebrations in different regions of the nation.

t was a cold evening and like many of you, I hated to step out into a cold winter evening. But as you know, in most cases Iour journeys are destined to be in unfavourable weather, paths and along with people whom we don’t like. I was walking as fast as I could to reach home. Each cell in my body was yearning to be home. But then I stumbled on something and almost fell over it. And in the dying rays of the setting sun I found someone lying on the street next to me. Is he dead?

When I observed closely, I found some feeble signs of life in him. I thought I would give it a try to bring him back to life. I don’t know why I decided to “waste” my time for him in that dirty place braving the cold wind! I learned that he needed my help to breathe again. I covered his mouth with mine and blew hard... Lo! I saw some words entering his dying soul. He breathed out a few abusive words back to me. I was embarrassed, but did not stop breathing into his soul. He spewed more abusive words at me. The process went on and gradually he began to breath on his own and to utter words that spread fragrance around us.

**** Today I am attending a book-signing event by an author as his special guest. His books are known for its fragrance of love and kindness.

Various activities and events are arranged in many countries worldwide on this day. Such activities aim to help young people voice their opinions, find ways to fight racism, and promote tolerance in their communities and in their lives. The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was established six years after an event, known as the Sharpeville tragedy or Sharpeville massacre, which captured worldwide attention. This event involved police opening fire and killing about 70 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa, March 21, 1960. The UN General Assembly called on the international community to increase its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination when it proclaimed the day as a UN Day of observance in 1966. It also called on all world states and organisations to participate in a programme of action to combat racism and racial discrimination in 1983.
