2 Thirty‐first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 3, 2019

Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary’s,

This past week was busy around the parish! On Tuesday night a large group of parishioners attended a talk by Dr. Jim O’Connell from Boston’s Healthcare for the Homeless Program. We were moved by his personal accounts and were struck by his warmth and humility. It was a wonderful evening, and I’m grateful to our St. Vincent de Paul Society for hosting this event. We will be announcing some new initiatives in the parish to support the important work that Jim and his colleagues do, so stay tuned!

This weekend we welcome back our seminarian Fernando Ayala as he participates in a vocation outreach for the Archdiocese of Boston. He will be speaking to us at some of the Masses about his vocation and will invite us all to pray for vocations. At the Masses at 9am and Noon we will prayerfully remember our beloved dead and light candles in their memory. Throughout the month of November the Book of the Dead will be placed near the Paschal Candle as a reminder to us that we should be praying for the dead during this month dedicated to the holy souls. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Last weekend we kicked off our Parish’s Grand Annual Appeal and I’m happy to report that we have collected $18,317 toward our goal of $80,000. Thank you to everyone who contributed this past week, either in the collection over the weekend or through online giving. We are at 23% of our goal! I encourage everyone to participate in this Annual Appeal, and to give from your heart. We have much to be grateful for as a parish, but we know we are a work in progress! Your support will help us to continue the important work of ministry and evangelization, bringing people closer to God and to one another in friendship and love.

As I mentioned in the bulletin and in my homily last weekend, running a parish with beautiful, old buildings is not cheap! Our Grand Annual Appeal will directly support the ongoing maintenance of our churches and rectory/office building. In case you missed it in last week’s bulletin, here is a list of repair work and purchases we intend to make in the coming year: Rectory/Parish Office Roof Repair, $10,000; St. Lawrence Church Roof Repairs $12,000; St. Lawrence Church Ramp/Masonry Repairs $4,500; St. Mary’s Church Roof Repairs, $15,000; St. Lawrence Church Sound System Repairs, $6,000; New Tables and Chairs for St. Mary’s Lower Church, $21,600; Renovate Kitchen and Bathroom in Rectory/Parish Office, $14,000. That brings us to a TOTAL of $83,100.

Many people mentioned to me after Mass that they didn’t come prepared to make a gift to the Grand Annual in the second collection. Not to worry! We have placed special envelopes for the Grand Annual at the entrances of our churches, so feel free to place that envelope together with your regular Sunday offering in the offertory basket in the coming weeks. For those who would prefer to make their donation online, please visit our website and make a one-time gift, or spread it out over the next few weeks or months if you prefer. Make sure you indicate that it is for the Grand Annual Collection: www.stmarybrookline/giving

God Bless You!

Fr Jonathan Gaspar

5 St. Mary of the Assumpon Brookline, Massachuses

On Tuesday, October 29th Bishop Richard Lennon passed away after a prolonged illness. Bishop Lennon was an auxiliary Bishop of Boston who later became Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. Many of our parishioners will remember Bishop Lennon when he was Fr. Lennon and was in residence here at St. Mary’s for many years while he worked in the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Boston. I got to know him very well as a seminarian when he was appointed Rector of St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. He was a kind and faithful priest and bishop, and I invite you to join me in praying for the repose of his kind soul. May he rest in peace. – Fr. Jonathan
