Entering her 12th season at the helm of the UAB program, Kerry Messersmith has showcased contin- ued success in leading the Blazers, evident by four 23-plus win seasons and a streak of seven straight seasons finishing .500 or better in Conference USA action. 2016 was a difficult season for the Blazers as injuries sidelined several players and saw UAB finish 11-19 overall and 3-11 in conference play. UAB is looking to bounce back after a hard-luck 2015 season where the Blazers finished with a 9-23 overall record and 1-15 in conference play. Gabby Deshotel was the bright spot in the 2015 season earning All-Conference USA honors. 2014 proved to be tough season for the Blazers, which saw a young UAB team finish 8-24 overall and 2-14 in C-USA. The highlight came from Sara Rishell, who competed with the US Collegiate National Team in the summer before earning All-C-USA Second Team honors. The 2013 season saw continued sucess for the UAB volleyball program under Messersmith. Alan Segal Associate Head Coach | 1st Season Sacramento State, 1986 Alan Segal enters his first season with the UAB indoor volleyball team and is making his second coaching stint at UAB.

Segal had previously been on staff at UAB in 2008 and helped lead UAB to a 27-8 overall record and a 13-3 Conference USA record. The program also picked up it’s first NCAA Tour- nament victory in 2008.

In addition to his time at UAB, Segal has coached at Eastern Illinois, Tulane and had two stints at Armstrong Atlantic State as a head coach. Segal brings over 25 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels to the Blazers volleyball program.

Segal also spent time as an assistant coach for the USA Men’s National Team at the 2010 World Club Championships and the USA Men’s Maccabiah Games in 1997 and 1993 as well as the USA Women’s Maccabiah Games in 1985 where the team claimed a silver medal in 1985 and a bronze medal in 1993.

He also served as the head coach for the USA Men’s team at the USA Maccabiah Games on three separate occasions, winning silver in 2001 and 2009 and taking home bronze in 2005.

The Southern California native earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation management with a minor in physical education from Sacramento State in 1982. He played varsity basketball and baseball in addition to club volleyball at Sacramento State.

Jeff White Assistant Coach | 1st Season Cal State Northridge, 1992 Jeff White is entering his first season as an assistant coach with the UAB indoor volleyball team.

Prior to coming to UAB, White spent three seasons at the helm of Birmingham Southern, where he amassed a 71-24 record (.747 winning percentage) including back-to-back-to-back 20 plus win seasons. He coached 17 All-SAA team members including three first-team selections.

Overall, White has over 20 years of coaching experience at all levels including junior high, high school, club and collegiate levels. He was named the Georgia High School Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2001, 2005 and 2008, as well as being named the Atlanta Journal Constitution Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2008.

A native of California, White earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from California State University Northridge in 1992 and his Master’s in Health Studies from the University of Alabama in 2003. He earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology in 2014 from the University of Georgia. The title of his dissertation was A Study of Mentoring in Volleyball Coaching.

He and his wife, Stephanie, live in Birmingham.
