AREA NEWS "A FAREWELL MESSAGE" The new pump for the snowmaking system has arrived on shcedule and is ready to be installed. This pump, as As the smell of frost lingers longer in the air, skiers as a described in a previous issue, has an effective capacity of breed begin to stir into action. It is a time of decision; of some three times that of last years. That change alone gives new things to buy; of plans for that special winter ski us much more snowmaking ability than any other ski area vacation; season lift passes, ski movies, weather forecasts. It in the . is a time for quickening anticipation and for some a fond farewell. Every year, usually in November, the Ski Club goes through the ritual of its annual general meeting and election of its new officers. According to the Club's constitution after a period of two terms of two years, each member of the Board of Directors must step down and make way for a new recruit. This year we bid a fond farewell to Rick Adrian and Barry Moffatt, both having served as vice presidents, and Bob McLaughlin, secretary for the past several years. Also leaving the Board is Doreen Ramplee -Smith a former ladies committee chairman and lately a member of the Board of Directors. Their contribution to the board and to the Club as a whole has been considerable. Club members generally have no idea to what extent members interests and wishes are protected, maintained and improved by the sincere efforts of members serving on the Board. In expressing our appreciation to the four of you may we just say "thank you for making Fortune a wonder However, in addition to the water pumping capacity, we ful place to ski." have changed our compressed air supply. This year we are renting two electric compressors with an option to buy. These 300 HP compressors are not very big and can be enclosed in a small addition to the pumphouse. Also, and of interest to all skiers, NO NOISE, and NO DIRTY DIESEL NEW LODGE FACILITY OIL. Of interest to us is the instant, reliable starting of electric compressors. The two compressors generate 3000 to replace Alexander CFM which combined with an existing electric compressor READY BY gives us 3500 CFM. DECEMBER 1st, 1973 This is double last year's supply and combined with the additional water gives us a snowmaking capacity easily See story page 7 double that of any of our competitors. We should be ready to make snow by mid-November, weather permitting. With the present capacity we should be able to get the triple chair operating with 24 hours of below freezing weather. Stay tuned to Camp Fortune for instant skiing in late November. The hills at Fortune are gradually taking on a smooth shaven look thanks to our new Mott mower. Acutally, it is three small self-driven mowers attached together and towed behind one of the small tracked vehicles. It is doing a superb job and will make skiing more enjoyable earlier. With almost 90 acres of ski hills to mow the job is a tedious one. Over the years it has been done by manpower and scythes, and old horse drawn mower pulled by a tracked vehicle, a rented hydraullically operated brush cutter mounted on a Bombardier and fmally the Mott. It will be possible now to cut the grass, brambles, trees etc. two or three times a summer until all the course growth is killed, leaving the grass to flourish.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS At a recent meeting of the Board of Directors a report of the Committee on the Constitution recommending two changes to General By-Law No. 1 was adopted. The first recommended amendment will clarify the maximum time an active director or officer, excluding the President, may remain on the Board. The maximum time will be two consecutive terms or four years plus the remainder of a retired director's or officer's term. The Board felt that this clarification was required in order to give directors more time to beome familiar with the Club's programs and operations. The second change will permit nominations for vacancies on the Board of Directors to be received up to seven clear days prior to the annual meeting. The General By-Law now permits nominations to be received up to seventy-two (72) hours before the annual meeting. In the past this has created great havoc for the Club because the General By-Law required that the names of the nominees be published in Ottawa newspapers not less than one day before the annual meeting. This did not allow enought time to permit the Ottawa papers to publish the advertisement in the legal notices columns. Publication of names of nominees at least one day before an annual meeting when an election for directors is required will remain a requirement; however, the proposed amendment will permit publication in a part of your Ottawa newspaper more likely to come to your attention and will not relegate the notices to personals column. The text of the recommended amendments to General By-Law No.1

E. OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS 4. Following an interval of at least two years such person may again hold office if properly elected or appointed thereto. 6. Nominations:- (c)All nominations shall be in writing and shall be addressed to the Club Secretary and shall be received in the business office of the Club at least seven clear days prior to the Annual Meeting. 3 CROSS COUNTRY TRAILS by Joe Woods A "DONT FORGET" TO ALL MEMBERS Preparations have been underway since October in Please "Don't Forget" your seasons pass or membership. 6 THE FIRE AT ALEXANDER LODGE By D. Bohart Alexander Lodge was first built in 1957, and officially opened by Ottawa's Mayor, George Nelms on February 2nd, 1958. It was added to in 1959, and again in 62, with the fmal wing completed in 1964. On Monday, October 29th, at 2:45PM., fire was discovered by Club Caretaker, Paul Emile Charron. Within minutes, fanned by high winds, the flames had gained an irreversible hold. Moments after fire leaped seventy-five feet in the air. To the tiny hushed group of human beings; mostly club employees, Alexander Lodge was doomed. The Chelsea Fire Department, with two pumper trucks, and fire crews and pumps from , hastily arrived on the scene. Fire had now spread to all parts of the building, and was quickly running uphill through the hardwood forest behind the lodge. Prompt action and available water from Fortune Creek prevented a major forest fire. The building was essentially demolished within the hour, but continued to burn on through the night, and into the next day. All that remained was the stark proftle of the central chimney, and a jagged foundation; small consolation for the fond memories by thousands of skiers who knew Alexander Lodge so well. The fire destroyed approximately 150 members' lockers located in the basement, 6000 dollars worth of ski racing equipment, all the contents of "Connie's" Babysitting Lodge, temporarily stored in Alexander. The entire stock of the Trading Post amounting to nearly $70,000 was also destroyed. The total loss neared close to a quarter of a million dollars, and with winter but three weeks away, something had to be done. The Board of Directors met in a special meeting on Wednesday, October 31st, and agreed to proceed immediately to make ready a lodge of approximately the same size as the one destroyed, and to be located in the same general vicinity. The new structure will be for this winter only, and will contain cafeteria and washroom facilities. It will be operational in time for the ski season. Three other lodges owned by the club, Fortune, Lockeberg, and the new Skyline Lodge, were of course, unharmed and along with the new replacement facility will assure adequate skier services for the forthcoming season. Recently, the cafeteria at Fortune Lodge had been expanded and upper Skyline Lodge will also be utilized this year, together with the new lower Skyline Lodge. The Club's master plan had called for the development of a new consolidated lodge complex in the main valley within the next three years. It is now contemplated that the construction start of the new lodge will be brought forward to commence the summer of 1974. The building being put up for. this season only will be used for alternate purposes next year. Another chapter has been written in the colourful history of this truly great Ottawa Ski Club.

PHOTO A.J.SMIALOWSKI TRADING POST NOTICE The tragic fire that destroyed Alexander Lodge on October 29, 1973 also destroyed the contents of the Trading Post. Only the records of the Trading Post were saved. These records will greatly assist skiers in making claims against their fire insurance policies. Most families carry a "Home Owner" type fire insurance. These policies provide for loss of personal belongings, even though located outside the actual home insured. Consult your own insurance agent for details on how to claim. Our records can assist you to establish that your items were located in Alexander Lodge. Loss of contents in lockers in the basement of Alexander Lodge should be approached the same way.

APPRENTICE INSTRUCTORS Each season the need for qualified instructors and coaches becomes greater. We must develop the needs for the future. Starting in December we will initiate a full season Apprentice Instructor training program. If you are close to 16 years of age, a parallel skier and interested in teaching people how to enjoy our sport, contact the Ski School desk for complete details.

MINI MIDGET INSTRUCTORS & ASSISTANTS Since the Ski School department of the Club acquired the mid-week Mini-Midget instruction course, the variety of times offered and lack of communications, put the teaching beyond the scope of a purely volunteer basis. We aim to maintain the high standard of instruction, and small groups and to accommodate as many students as possible with available, qualified personnel. "Qualified''. need not mean CSIA certified. To guide pre-schoolers in the enjoyment of skiing requires more than just a basic knowledge of ski technique or an experienced parental hand. Skiers interested in instructing or assisting on this course should contact the Ski School desk by letter or telephone. Successful applicants will be compensated 827-1717.

17 OTIAWA SKI CLUB INCORPORATED TREASURER'S REPORT YEAR ENDED APRIL 30, 1973 The consolidated financial statements of the Club for the year ended April 30, 1973, together with the Auditors' Report to the Members, are included in this Newsletter. The operating results show that while revenues increased by more than 6% over the previous year to $853,902 ., direct charges increased almost 12% and administrative costs and interest on long-term debt increased by a total of $125,000. Certain of the administrative costs pertain to the reorganization of the Club and are non-recurring in nature. The Club has continued the practice of charging depreciation in its accounts, which this year amounted to $87,212. The funds used in operations during the year totalled $33,602. As mentioned previously in the President's Message, sales of day tickets were well below budget for the year and this was the major factor contributing to our unsatisfactory results for the year. Further, it was anticipated that, in addition to being of service and convenience to members, the ski shop would produce a positive· financial contribution. This did not materialize. Certain changes have been effected in the ski shop for the coming season which it is expected will improve operating results. During the year, the Club issued treasury notes and obtained term bank financing in the amount of $679,500. and spent $542,614. on additions to Club facilities. As a result of the unsatisfactory results of the 1973 fiscal year, capital additions will be restricted during the succeeding year to a few items which are considered to be essential to the successful operation of the 1973- 1974 ski season. Yours very truly, Stewarts. Sutcliffe, Treasure r

Le 8 juillet 1973 Coopers & Lybrand Comptable Agrees AUDITORS' REPORT TO THE MEMBERS We have examined the consolidated balance sheet of The Ottawa Ski Club Incorporated and subsidiary companies as at April 30, 1973 and the consolidated statements of earnings and source and use of working capital for the year then ended. Our examination included a general review of the accounting procedures and such tests of accounting records and other supporting evidence as we considered necessary in the circumstances. In our opinion, and according to the best of our information and explanations given to us and as shown by the books of the companies, these consoldiated financial statements are properly drawn up so as to exhibit a true and correct view of the state of affairs of the companies as at April 30, 1973 and the results of their operations and the source and use of their working capital for the year ended, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles applied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
